salt water + RC boats = Bad?

I want an RC boat pretty badly, but I live by a lagoon and the bay. Both bodies of water tend to be pretty flat where I live, but they are, of course, salt water. I always see people mentioning that they race on a lake or a pond, so I'm thinking that most people don't use their boats on salt water bodies. Do people choose lakes and ponds because it's more flat or because salt water is a no-no in the RC world?
