Does anyone have a 3-speed conversion in there .21 converted T-Maxx? I saw a 3-speed conv. kit for the T-Maxx from "radrc" but the site was hard to understand. I have the dynamite .21 conv. kit and it came with a .26 eng. I just want to know if it will work?

It will work. The .21 coversion kit uses the same chassis even though it may be bigger than a .21 engine. Heres the one you want to be looking at:

3 Speed .21 T-Maxx Kit
Part #-0340 $119.99
Just the basics! This kit is intended for the custom Project builder. It has the basic components of the 3 speed for those who would like to build your own customized setup. With only minimal modifications, this kit works with most of the extended chassis .21 kits. Installation may require you to modify your motor mount setup.

Above Kit - Plus a Brand New T-Maxx
Transmission with 3 Speed Installed & Tuned
Part #- 034T $318.99

On the old maxxtraxx there was a fellow that did the 3 speed modification on his own (bought the kit) and reported it was one of the worst made products he had ever seen. The amount of modification need to the tranny and the kit itself was brutal. He never did get it working right. Thats the only person I have ever knew that even bought one of those kits. Dont take one persons word for it, but do a little research on it first.

now I'm really curious...sound like another cool modification! Got a website for the radrc stuff? If I find anything interesting as far as research I'll pass it on

I checked out that site, and WoW that kit isn't cheap and they have a video of a tmaxx with 1/8 buggy wheels on it driving on a parking lot. yeah it sounds cool but is it worth 300+bucks IMO NO! their other stuff seems high priced to. and if that guy that bought it didn't get it to work I wouldn't invest in them. even though it says under new management.

3spd is a novalty, it's cool if your going to road race your max where you can get it up to speed but for dirt racing with jumps and or bashing it really wouldn't be worth the extra money. unless you have the money and your have everytyhing else for your maxx even the nitrous kit and the biggest motor you can get.

just my opinion.
if it ain't broke don't fix it, and when it breaks fix it whithin reason it's about havin' fun not who can spend the most money.

If you want 3 speeds buy the Madforce or the genesis, you wont have to spend $600+ for the rare occasion you get to shift gears twice in a run.

In theory the 3-speed conversion would work.

It is just basically a on-road 2 speed put on the spur gear axle. What this would do is give you an extra gear. Sounds like it would work...right?

Well after i looked at it i noticed a few things. On my engine (maybe some of yours are different, but this is the way mine is setup.) When i mesh my gears the correct position (about a 1/16" - 1/8" between the face of the clutch bell and spur gear allows the spur to wobble [the tmax spur metal or plastic does this] until it comes to speed) i have almost NO room at all to move my engine mount back.

Luckily the mach .26 comes with a sliding mount (engine can slide on mount) but when pushed back...the exaust header will hit the shock.

The three speed conversion requires you to move your engine about a 1/4" back (away from the transmission) and that would require you to cut your chassis, and sand it smooth so that the mount dosent rub up against any burs, which is a pain.

Also one other thing that i have noticed is that you would have to tune that third speed to YOUR TRUCK. It would not be like the maxx tranny out of the box and be tuned to work correctly (since they are all the same out of the box, they can do this) and possibly have to tune it in the future, you have to tune it.

The idea and concept is a great one but until i see that someone can make and use one with ease, i wouldnt buy it.

can someone explain to me why they say dont use oversized tires or even stock tires for their kit?

... a 3 speed is pretty simple... as stated above, tis an onroad 2-speed put in the stock spur location... basically you tune your stock 2 speed so its always in 1st, tune the new 2 speed so ti shifts right and then tune your stocker to shift but only after the first 2 speed has shifted... youll probably want to gear down a tooth or two on the clutchbell because an onroad 2 speed will be geared higher... because its onroad... thats the way the new CEN genesis has its 3 speed set up and according to them it works pretty well...
