Well I figured I loved RC stuff as a kid. And since im getting into serious hobbies and have a real job I figured I would go learn about the wonderful world of RC Cars. I figured I would start off with somethign simple so I grabbed a Tamiya Super Hornet. I know I know its nothing big to you guys and I am certainly NOT racing in a track or anything. But MAN does it fly! I assembled ti in no time and got a real nice proportional accelerator and steering radio for it. after I got the batt/charger/radio/kit I spent not even 300 bucks...

I love it,.. whips around my street intot he sand.. its wonderful! I cant wait to learn more.. and this thing takes a beating to I guess..

I hope to learn more from this forum ...

BTW anyone else have a Super Hornet? Did I make a good purchase for a beginner?

Thanks
Nick D

Thats a great car for a beginner. If you consider upgrading, id go with ball bearings(probably 5x11 size all around, but check the manual), a ESC- electronic speed control to replace the wiper type speed control you have. Oil shocks would be good too, and maybe a traxxas stinger motor or cheap 27 turn motor if you really get good.

They all equal more speed, less wear, betetr handling and more fun!

ahh actually I bougnht a nice Airtronics Blazer with proportional speed (variable speed control like you said)... Its RATHER nice.. I love it.. the thing PEELS through the sand and everything.. its so cool.. and it does have oil shocks.. I had to fill them according to the instructions.. its real cool.

So this thing good for off roading? my entire HUGE backyard is nothing but short grass.. or should I keep it to the streets and parking lots?

I'm sure I will be upgrading.. I'm no track racer, I wont be taking my cars to the track to race against others, this is strictly for crazy car action in my backyard or on the street.

Atleast I can blow away those tyco and radio shack guys :-D

Thanks

Nice. That ESC is tiny and very good. Yes it'll be fine for off roading- my wild willy 2 was pretty much always in the dirt. I just looked at Tamiya USA and yes, itll be fine for off road driving. looks like fun If you have an esc and oil shocks, just get bearings next time you are out and don't worry about further upgrades until you become a better driver.

Congrats, excellent choice for a 1st RC. Mine was a Tamiya Lunchbox and boy did I have great times with that.

yeah, for a 1st car, you can't really go wrong with a Tamiya. simple and good instructions, along with durability, its usually a winner. Just have fun with it and experiment. ask if you need help or have questions too.

well today was a blast! I got a full charge on a 2400 mah batt and went screaming around my street and gravel drive way kicking up rocks and screaming down the street ... very fun stuff..

Question:

my radio on the car came with an external batt pack for the radio alone.. I dont use it, I power it via the car batt.. Should I connect the radio batt pack or just stick with the car batt?

Thanks

That pack thing is for nitro cars, you dont need to worry about it;)

I think it can be used as a back up battery, but I wouldn't use it. Its mainly for nitro cars:)

I use a reciver pack on my TXT-1...for two reasons really...1. The servo I'm using (HiTec HS-945MG) is a real power hog (and I'll soon be running two) 2. I wan't to be able to steer properly even though the main pack are running out...

Glad you found something you like. It was good that you already have oil filled shocks and an ESC. You came to the right place for help. I don't know how many times I have seen some one stuck with their car get help really fast. Its almost better to tell everyone whats not working on your car here before you go to the hobby shop because these guys can find the problem and tell you how to fix it and get you back out bashing. Welcome to the hobby and the forum.

I to have a grasshopper, it just screems, but thats because I have a 19 turn touring motor in mine, the super hornet is a rock solid setup, I belive they share the same tranny and front suspension so the trannys can take lots of abuse I have put 16 turn motors in mine and never a problem.

good choice, I am planing on adding a super hornet to my collection soon

I have a friend that has a old ThunderShot with a 16x2 Kyosho EndoPlasma in it...I can't recall that I saw any wear when I dissassambled it to "restore" it so it could be said that Tamiya builds tough gearboxes...

He'll get what's comming to him some time.. He's on the stock gearing too.Boy do I feel sad for that car. BTW his car has Road hawgs
