When you purchase Thread Lock you should buy the Blue type. Loctite and a few others make it. The color is a standard and blue is best when you need to remove parts again. It is used for Metal to Metal parts to hold them in place. It is good for holding the exhaust manifold and engine mounts.
Do not use Threadlock on metal screws to plastic parts because it will cause problems.

What JoeMAXX said (though I use red on engine mount to chassis screws - another story). On the silicone for sealing the engine (backplate and carby), get Permatex with the gold colour label (orange goo inside - oxygen sensor safe). Also, do yourself a favour and get a little tube of Associated Green Slime. Use a little dab of that on the o-rings for the high-speed needle, low-speed needle, idle screw and carby o-rings. It'll make tuning a lot easier, especially if/when you have to reset everything to the HPI-recommended settings (as opposed to factory settings, which often are not spot on). It doesn't take much. There's a tip on, I think, RC Nitro where they suggest using the end of a medium-size zip tie for applying it - it works pretty good.
