hi, i'm interested in buying a radio for a robotics competition, and i want to be able to use it later on for rc airplanes, as my dad plans on buying one(we only have rc cars right now, he used to fly planes but that was 20 years ago). I am thinking about buying a Futaba T6XAS, i know there is a 75mhz version of this radio, but the hobby stores near me don't carry it and i need to have a ground frequency if i want to use it for robotics, if i just change the 72mhz crystal in this radio to a 75mhz crystal, will it work?

Thank you in advance

Hi,
Generally there is more to it than just switching crystals. There are some components in both the transmitter and receiver that are pretty frequency specific. Many manufacturers (including Futaba) will not reccomend switching from the low end of the airplane band to the high end without a service rep being involved. One of the chief problems is that you can put 72 mhz crystals in a transmitter set up for 75 mhz, and it probably will operate a receiver, at least in close, but it will be radiating all sorts of trash on other bands which could get you in trouble with the FCC. Don't do it.
Regards, Dave
