Hi johnpaul,
There is still a very strong and active group of modelers who enjoy free flight and build from kits. Most of these folks seem to be the quiet sort who do not feel moved to share on a bulletin board. The Flying Aces orginazation is just one of the National groups who build and compete with rubber band powered scale models. Their annual contest in Geneseo NY is quite an experience just to see the many beautiful models. As far as beginning modelers, more and more are coming into the hobby through ARF models and then reaching out for more advanced projects.
Cheers, Dave

JP,

You are correct that there are not a lot of builders compared to 'assemblers' out there, and FF is a small fraction of the modeling world.

That being said, there is still a lot to be learned from the techniques of stick and tissue, limited power, free-flight models. There is a nice web site devoted to stick and tissue, rubber power, etc. I find the techniques they use for the light weight FFs tranlates well to other areas of the hobby. Check out Small Flying Arts (http://www.smallflyingarts.com/)

I came in with a ready to fly plane. I still like the RC planes, but free flight is really fun. Had one that I flew(made it out of sheet foam and a balsa stick for the body) pretty good. Never did know how long it actually flew. Out of sight on first flight, but very gracefull and gentle. I wish that I could get my RC to fly that smoothly and gently. Too bad that I found out about freeflight after I got into the RC side of the hobby. Now there isn't anywhere to fly them around here. Back home I had permission to fly on a sod farm as long as I didn't do any damage to the sod. Too bad there aren't more places like that around.

There is a stick-building oriented board called Small Flying Arts. Many good techniques to found in the forums. See: http://www.smallflyingarts.com/index.htm

johnpaul hello, I just found this forum and registered tonight because of my fascination w/stick/tissue construction! am enjoying the beginners aspect of this hobby. I have built 8 stick/tissue planes, most, rubber motored. none of which I have ...motored...my interest is in the details of construction. I am learning more and more with each plane. Some kits come with plastic cowlings, great challenge replacing these w/balsa, carved to the dimension required (the fitting between balsa and formers is much more real looking).Somehow the plastic parts, shoved over the 1st former, just doesn't look too real. tissue looks more like a WWI coverings. I plan to go on to heated coverings(simulating brushed alum.) and eventually RC. but so far(6 months), building is my favorite part. Just to let you know, there are others that appreciate the construction end! with respect tilefish

Johnpaul, I think many will agree that ARFs are a major part of the hobby. But that is not to say there is no interest in scratch building or kit building. it is just that these aspects of the hobby don't get a lot of exposure! My main interest in the hobby at Scale and Giant Scale RC,(specifically biplanes.) but I have never stopped building stick and tissue models. I really enjoy enlarging old plans and scratching newer bigger models. Attached is my last one, a 25% enlarged Pietenpol for Peck Polymer plans, I flew this at Tom Polapink's Cole Palen Memorial event last December! it is covered with Nelson Lite film!
flies great!

Think about it, you toss in the air, no worry's about controlling it, let it just fly on it's own. I think the commercial aspect of being able to just buy a 10.00 electric free flight plane has dominated the market due to utter ease of getting it into the air hassle free.

It is a dying and lost art I agree, being replaced by revisions in the kit RC world, where there is plenty that's being lost. This is largely for Old Timers since that's the middle of their hayday, but I do feel it's only temporary, there will be plenty involved once they figure out they can rip the guts out of the cheap foam and plastic birds to create their own, that extends to cheap RC ones as well. The basis behind going in more traditional means is entirely a different thing all together since it's not appealing to the status quoe, ie. immediate gratification.

I have a special place in my heart for free flights regardless of how far I get into the RC end, they do hold serious merit when you are trying out new plane design configurations mainstream, I've seen too many guys build this elaborate, yet odd RC plane only to find it doesn't have a chance in the world, I'd simplify the process hitting a piece of foam with the sanding block, weighting it to see if it glides, if not, revise, if that doesn't work, I only lost some packaging material and an afternoon. I think the foam cutter crowd will eventually catch up to this end of the spectrum, once it does, look out......

Here are just a few links to FreeFlight sites that you should find interesting. We do post to forums, but one reason you might have few responding is this is Radio Control Zone
