Here's a pic of my new TLT-1 next to my 1/5th scale car. The 1/5th scale only sees the track so I wanted something to drive around the house. The TLT-1 is GREAT!! I've been rock crawling over pillows and books and doing the car crush thing on my kids toys :). I still need to paint the body...maybe a TONKA theme?

I see you got the PMT Eclipse Tires and a Samba Pipe installed she looks good really good .....

How do the eclipes tires handle on the track???

I haven't run on a track yet so the jury's still out on the Eclipse. I hope they work well because I bought 8 pairs of them  . Besides the pipe and tires, I've also added some KP Designs rear arms and an Alro Ultra chassis.

That chassis is made by ALRO RACING??

Is that a technokit ??

AceCoolie

Yeah, the chassis is from Alro Racing. You can get it from here (http://www.alroracing.com/) . It's really a work of art. It's 12.7mm thick! Here's a couple of pics compared to a stock T-Max chassis. My car is an FG EVO1.

how fast would you say the average 1/5 scale car is and about how fast would you say yours is?

AceCoolie
02-29-2004, 11:19 AM
Most 1/5th scale cars with stock gearing go around 40-45 mph. If you gear up, you can go much faster. I gear mine a little lower for more acceleration. Most of the tracks I race on are fairly small. While that may not seem fast compared to smaller cars, you have to remeber that 1/5th scale cars weigh 20+ lbs so they handle more like real cars. You have to have VERY good brakes and a large area to go that fast. Anther thing is that since the cars are so big, they LOOK like they are going much faster.

dang i wouldnt want to turn marshall that race with those things going by me.

AceCoolie

Because marshaling can be a bit dangerous, a yellow flag is flown and all cars are required to slow down before any marshal goes out on the track. Some races even use a pace car.

That is so sweet! I wish i had the money for one of thoes :( ... its more like real racing than RC track racing,.

If your wife finds out I'll take it off your hands for you. ;) :p I would love to have a 1/5, too expensive for me right now though. They even have a track close to me whwere they race 1/5. If I get more money I might look into it. How much is a decent one that can be raced? I heard the harm basic sucks. How much are tires and how long do they last?

Some races even use a pace car.

cool - so one of the race organisers wants to play 1/5th scale....so the build a pace car?? or is it just an FG eco with flashing lights?:p

how good are the brakes on these things? being the smallest vehicles to use in wheel disc brakes that is?

;)

You can get a decent car for around $700. Tires are around $60 per pair and can last anywhere from 15 min to several full race weekends. It depends on the type of tire, type of track, and how you drive. The initial investment for 1/5th scale is higher than other scales but the cost of racing is the same or a little more than 1/10 but less than 1/8th.

One of the guys in my club has a second car and he was planing to paint it up and use it as the pace car. I think it's a sportsline.

The brakes are awesome. They will EASILY lock all 4 wheels. The way I set mine up is to do some laps to heat up the tires and then dial my brakes so they are just on the verge of locking with full brakes. I also use my 2nd PMix to back the front brakes off a little if I'm turning which allows me to brake late and not skid through the turn.

For 700 do you get everything minus the radio? I would drive it at the track and mabey a little on the street. How could you wear them in 15 minutes? Can you overev them like nitro cars?

AceCoolie
03-01-2004, 06:02 PM
$700 would get you everything except radio and servos. The cars all come with engine, tires, body, etc.

The tires I wore out in 15min were Ellegi S1's. I was driving very aggresivly on a tight track with an open diff. After the first qualifier, they were slicks! They provided good grip while it lasted. I switched to PMT Kronos and have got MUCH better life. Sets of tires lasted 2-3 race days. Now with my PMT Eclipse, they're supposed to provide even more grip and last even longer! I guess we'll see.

Could you recommend a car? I am thinking about asking everyone for money for my bday and buying one. But it's months away. :( Then after my bday I can get a job and drive. Woohoo! Got no car though. :(

FG, HARM, Technokit...They're all good. Just decide how much you want to spend. I'd look on eBay if I were you. They usually have good deals.

potatoe_bird
03-01-2004, 06:41 PM
Ebay had one, for $1,300. I would like to be around 1k for car and servos. I tried to find the technokit website but it was in a foriegn language. I thought about it and I can get a raceworthy 1/10 set up for $600-$700. It's cheaper and faster. Mabey I should just get a NTC3 until I can get a good job. Somebody talk me out of it. lol

Do a search for Technokit on googleand then translate the site :)

Comparing 1/5th scale to 1/10th scale is sort of like comparing 1/10th scale to radio shack R/C cars. There is just no comparison. The cars are more complex and handle MUCH more realistically. 1/5th scale racing is the pinnacle of R/C (cars).

but what about 1/4 scale wloudnt that be the pinnacle of r/c racing because they are bigger and might handle more realistically? does anybody out there have a video of their 1/5 or 1/4 scale car or truck?:)
