I bought this HobbySource XR-1 4 channel helicopter. It absolutely will not hover, well it will but not in one spot. I understand that wind and many other variables play a large roll in the ability of a heli to hover. It should stay in a 3 foot by 3 foot square right. thats not what gets me, i bring the bird to a hover and it will nose forward really hard, so i set it down with no trim adjustments at all i bring the bird to a hover once more and it will bank left and nose up like the right still is held in the bottom left corner of its range of motion. any thoughts? Also the tail rotor is operated by a seperate electric motor. i set the trim for it to zero so that it will not spin untill after the main rotor has started. i spin up the main rotor and the tail rotor starts like its supposed to but when i throttle down the tail rotor continues to spin and this make the heli circle when it comes to a hover, which it would not do after i set the trim to zero. Is it common to have to hold the left stick slightly to the left when hovering to keep it the heli from spinning. just in case your not familiar with the XR-1 it is very similar to the piccolo fun model. fixed pitch blades, two motors, a 7 or 8 cell 700mah nimh battery pack, gyro and speedo in one with a seperate reciever.

I learned how to hover by useing very small control movements. About the tail rotor, if you have a computer radio, add revo... this increases the speed of the tail rotor as you add throttle and decreases the speed of the tail rotor as you lower the throttle. If you don't have a computer radio, try adding a little left trim and then try hovering. If that doesn't work, try adding some right trim and then hover it.

so basically there is nothing wrong with my heli, it's the loose nut behind the wheel. i just thought it was kind of strange that the tail rotor would start spinning after powering up the main rotor, after not adjusting trims or anything. and the helicopter would never drift in the same direction twice in a row even in the kitchen where there is no wind interference. well i guess ill just keep practiceing thanks for the input.

Welcome to the world of helicopters. If no input is made even the best setup contest helicopter struggle to stay in a 3ft by 3ft box for more than 20 seconds. I'm actually talking about my contest quality Caliber 90 here. By no means will a helicopter with out flight augmentation stay in one spot for more than 5 seconds. I cannot make any real guesses as to what is causing you trim changes on cyclic controls except that there is excessive free play in the system, also your blades may be out of track which i have noticed micro helicopters to be a bit sensitive too. I will say that i dont know much about your particular helicopter but if its anything like the humming bird or piccolo series then the cyclic trim changing every time it lifts off is pretty normal. Also when you are indoors don't assume that there is no wind because the airflow coming from the rotor disk disturbs the air plenty for micro helicopters. Also don't for get about the airconditioning vents in the room you are in. I've noticed when flying a Piccolo Pro and humming bird in a 10ft by 10ft room that as i got closer to the wall the helicopter would actually be pulled in towards the wall more.
i saw this one helicopter called the humble bee its like 40$ but dose it go forward or dose it just go up and down? it dosnt look like it would move forward. Any one know anything about it.
