I've been away from R/C for about 12 years. I was thinking about putting together a cheap off-road buggy set-up to go racing at the local track. I'm totally lost by all the new BL talk but I'm okay with that.

Anyway, at your local tracks is BL the only game in town? Or is it more restricted to top-flite drivers? I just want to race some little 2wd stock/novice class.

And I guess if anyone has a link to a good BL primer/faq I would take it. :-)

It's not super wide spread at this time. Most of the people I know have a Novak Super Sport, but at the track it's still predominately brushed motors.

Generally speaking tracks have been allowing brushless motors in the mod class when racing, but only at the local level. Any sanctioned races are still limited to brushed motors.

If you are wanting to race in stock class with a brushless motor your only real option is the Novak brushless system. You can basically set the ESC on the 5800 to run similar to a stock class set up or you can purchase the 4600 (I think that's the number) which is designed to be a direct competitor to a 27 turn stock class motor. A lot of local tracks may allow this set up in their races, though the Novak is still generally a big faster as it has better acceleration than a 27 turn stock class motor.

As for learning more about BL, your best bet is to start reading the brushless pages here. Flip through the threads and read, then flip throughs some more and read some more. Eventually you will get the idea of what's good and not good and have a better idea of what brushless is all about. Basically there is a ton of information here, you just have to sift through it and read.
