I would say that you should get all of the grease out of the dif cases when you're doing the mod. Easier to inspect for wear/tear if the case is clean, plus you will need to put fresh oil in the dif (at least I would assume you will run silicone oils instead of the grease) for proformance reasons and you don't want the grease and the oil mixing if you can help it.

Get some warm/hot water and an old brush of some sort and scrub those suckers.

To elaborate further on the subject, I suggest using paper towels or an old rag to get all the grease out of the diff case, then give it the warm/hot soapy water treatment. By all means do not use anything like motor cleaner or similar chemicals, as they can damage the plastic.

Yes, it takes some work to do the job, but if you want it done right, do so the first time. It'll save you headaches later on. I recommend a quality silicone fluid for inside the diffs. With the gears installed (except the larger "top" gear that fits next to the top/ring gear, fill just enough to reach between the middle and top of the cross pin closest to you. Don't fill it completely - it needs the extra space to allow for fluid expansion and for the spider gears to move about. As for fluid weight(s), that's up to you. Some use 5k front, 3k rear, some use 50k front and 30k rear. Right now I'm using 10k in both and I'm pretty happy with it. Also use a quality grease inside the diff housing (the two halves that hold the diff and pinion gear) and, if needed, shim behind the pinion gear for better mesh. It'll help save you from having broken pinion and/or ring gear teeth later on.
