I tore the front and rear differentials out of my Savage so I decided to do the 4 gear conversion on it. Now I have all my parts and I'm ready to start on it but I went to my LHS to get some diff grease and they didn't have any type of grease. Now my question is can I use just regular multi purpose grease like you use in a grease gun, or do I need to order RC car diff grease and if so what weight grease should I get? Also is there anything else that I might could use from a local parts store. I really want to get it put back together today so if there is an alternative grease I can use without having to order it please let me know. All help is greatly appriciated.

You can use automotive grease, no problem... about anything will work but waterproof marine grease is best... like the stuff for boat trailer wheel bearings.

hey. i used ofna diff lube in mine when i did the 4 spider gear mod. i used 1000 wt in the front and 3000 in the back, but most people use a higher weight then that... like 10000 in the front and 15000 in the back. i like a lighter set up though so it doesn't lock the diffs at all, although after about a gallon of gas or so its gonna leak out with the lighter weight, so you gotta watch that. later.

Okay, you've done the 4-gear mod. Good deal. If you're talking about what to use inside the diff, then use silicone diff fluid (oil). Your LHS should have that, though if they didn't have grease, they may not have silicone either.
If you're talking about the gear box itself, in which the diff and pinion gear are, then yes, automotive grease will work. However, it tends to be a bit sticky and can slow you down. I use a lightweight lithium grease blend in mine. It's black (blended, not white lithium), has that typical bearing grease kinda smell and it's a bit thick at first, but once you get going, it thins out a little. I've had no problems running it in mine. Inside the diff, I'm using Ofna 10k silicone front and rear.

I use black or white lithium. Its all good to me. Just rebuilt my front diff with white. Straight out of the grease gun! lol I don't usually use marine grease because, like kitty said, its thick. Also, try lubriplate. Its good stuff, and it sticks to the gears, so you don't need much, and it helps keep the drag down dramatically.

I just got done rebuilding my maxx and used 30k weight AE pure silicone diff fluid in the front and 60k in the back. the diffs have a delayed reaction thing going on. there reletively stiff at first but once you get them rolling they loosen up a bit. after running the truck for the first time after the build I found I like this setup! it has better traction on dirt and asphalt. I used diff greese to lube my pinnion and ring gear in the case I decided to try this setup after seeing a simmilar setup in an article on the traxxas site just thought Ide chime in with my $0.02 I know this is a savage party please don't flame this lowly maxxer
