I'm using a 1920 8 turn and a Schulze 18.91 no fins. In my super rs4 there are little openings for saddle pack batteries but I'm using the standard 6 cell stick pack right now so I have enough space to mount the controller so 50% of the coiling plate would be open to the ground.

Should I just mount it just in the open air or fasten it down?

I will be running 10 cells in the future so heat will be reduced down the line.

DO NOT mount it to the open ground !!
as there are so many small stones flying around, they could easily access the esc through these "holes", better way:
mount it on a several piece of aluminium (a small plate mounted on the top deck might be a good thing) or combine the above solutionj with a cooling fan from a PC (use the 5 v versions for 6 cell and the 12 v for more then 10 cells) and try to get a special heat transferring tape, that might be available in PC Shops (it is laid between the esc cooling fins and the aluplate to get a better heat flow between these Plates.

(AND try to gear the car properly, many people try to "tune" their cars to the max, then wondering why the esc burns down, gear it 1-2 teeths lower, then the heat might be reduced relly greatly but the speed and accleration isnīt actually reduced that much.)
Good luck
