Just finished installing the radio and speed control in a Midwest "Jim Wilder" tug and when I run the motor in anything less than full ahead or full astern the speed control or motor whines like crazy! My question is can anything be done to quiet it down? It's bad! Wish it sounded like a desiel but no.
The speed control is a Vantec 411 and the motor is the one that came with the kit. I did solder capacitors between terminals and from each to the motor case.

There's really nothing you can do. It must be an older ESC. The new ones have a higher frequency so you can't hear it. What happenes is this - a speed control can't change the voltage, so it switches the power on & off to the motor sometimes up to millions times/second & this is how it changes the speed of the motor. This is the frequency. The older ones have a slower frequency that essentially turns the motor into a speaker - a frequency slow enough that you can hear.

Thanks bugfanatic-guess I'll have to make do with it for now. After trying it out some more it does sound like it is coming from the motor!
By the way I live in Midland Mich.

I collect all kinds of VW's which includes some of the older Tamiya & Kyosho Beetles. Since they are so old, they have the older ESC's in them & they all squeal when at partial throttle. What's even stranger is listen to a cop car when it has it's light bar on, but no siren. That 'blinking' squeal you hear coming is from the strobe capacitors. No moving parts & yet it squeals - go figure that one out.
