i know where 2 pro1 are sitting new in box, i highly suggest buying a pro over a rtr version.. the upgrades it has are costly to buy seperate and well worth the cost (will be cheaper to buy) any basic new or used radio system for it..
i also have a pro1 roller (175 shipped) that can be made rtr with picco 26, jr xr3 radio and shipped for like 325 if you were interested...

I think the included engine is ok like charlesd said. It has about 1.9 horsepower and should be able to hang with faster engines on a tight course. On a more open course, you probably will get taken on the straights. I am still using the included engine, but I think I will step up to a Hyper .21 8port race later down the line, since the track I race at will be getting bigger. Kekekek, if you buy a lightning, you will probably be better off getting the Pro version, because it will save on the cost of hop-ups. Good luck with your decision :)

i was running a broken well cracked 21bb in my pro and running .03 sec behind a os vbz one.. driving skill would be as close as i would want.. so it was not driving skill aka his worse than mine.. that kept me up with him.. they run strong.. i ran a 14t cb on it..
i have a hpi s-25 in mine at the moment and and running very nice with it..
it is a great engine to learn the buggy with..

I am looking at getting another r/c since I will have $120 extra dollars on my hands by may so I am looking at getting a HB Lightning..
From what I have heard I will be better off getting the Lightning Pro (1st one) since the hopups to price ratio is good. What steering servo would you recommend for a basher that might race once in a while? I was thinking that buying an MX3 and then a new steering servo would be a decent deal, but I dont know much about the high torque servos used in 1/8 scale buggies. If all goes well I might have a lightning pro by the end of my freshman year!

Woops totally forgot to ask this question.
What parts are notorious for breaking on the lightning pro-1? Just want to know if I do decide to get it because then I will stock up on the parts when I order it from tower since my lhs more then likely wont have parts for it.
Man if only AE released a 1/8 buggy, I would be all over that since my lhs would have parts for it like my gt!

you could always buy another pro1 as a parts car! you can sell the engine/pipe for atleast $70 on ebay and the tires/rims for another $30
think about it: $190 for all the parts you would ever need and more
charlesd
04-04-2004, 04:06 PM
That's what i did. I bought a second hb pro off of ebay. One with no engine but the guy already had spare parts.
I've got everything that i could possibly need.
By the way, the wing mount and wing are very fragile. The rest is rock solid.
In one summer i broke the wing mount on the right side, and 1 screw that holds the knuckle came loose. That's it and i had some pretty bad crashes and run ins.

wing mounts, a set of c hubs, and the plastic suspention mounts.. in all 15$ in parts..
my pro 1 roller is still forsale.. LOL.. and comes with lots of spare parts.. but since i sold my menace, i dont have to sell it now.. i could do a truccy with it.. have not decide.. i do have a ofna 2 speed id like to put in one

and i do not think there is anywhere else selling pro1 on the web for under 335$.. i know where 2 sit on shelves though.. but they have the 335 price..

I having major problems with my kit 21bb engine. I can't for the life of me get it to idle anymore, or run for any sustained period of time to be honest. I have 1 gallon of nitro through it max. I think my problem lies in carburation, but I'm not sure, I've dissassembled the card completely twice and cleaned it, but I have noticed a couple quirks. Every now and then the low speed needle sleeve just locks up and won't move. I have to completely back out the low speed needle and the idle screw to free it up. I think something may be slightly tweaked or bent, but I can't figure out how or why. Once it seized so bad I stripped my FMA metal gear servo. Anyway, I've reset my needles back to factory several times, switched glow plugs (Mccoy 9's) a couple times, broke my pullstart, switched my 1/10 starter box to 1/8 to accommadate my buggy and I still can't get it to run.
It ran relatively well all last summer, the only complaint I've ever had was it has always been hard to restart when hot. It ran awesome in January on the ice/snow down my street. It even ran fairly decent the last time I went out bashing last week, but it started acting up, I tried in vain to cure it and eventually busted the pull start.
I spent all afternoon today trying to figure this thing out. It does start on the starter box, but it won't stay running unless I rev it to midrange, if I try to let it idle it dies, or if I rev it to the high end needle it dies. I have the idle set as high as it will go, but it still isn't enough to keep it running. Other than my idea of switching to a hotter plug, does anyone out there have any suggestions?
Think my engine is toast?
How much is a new carb?
charlesd
04-05-2004, 06:00 AM
I would beleive the carb to be toast since you seem not to be getting any response with needle changes. (Also take time to re-seal your engine).
Look on ebay for an Hpi Savage Carb or a Hot bodies Carb. The hpi savage 21 engine is the same engine as the HotBodies .21.
I've seen carb's go as low as 15$. Some have buy it now at 40.

So, this weekend I bought the new pro 2. WOW. I love this thing. The rpo 1 was really nice, but the sharper turning is a huge difference. Doesn't flip as easy. Just kinda seems more manuverable. I took my Picco 26 from my old one and threw in it, Hi Tech 645 for the steering and Hi tech high speed for the throttle. Petty responsive. I only ran it for about 10 minutes so far, but very impressed in the handling.
If anyone is looking for a used Pro1, I'm selling mine (w/out motor). It has all new arms, savage gears in the diffs, new center diff, new tank with new spare, roto start, Futaba Controller/Reciever, JR Racing 590 High Torque Steering Servo, JR Racing 270 Throttle Servo. New Engine Plate & Mount, New Wing Mount, Newly Rebuilt Shocks,New Tires, A set of Savage tires on rims that mount up on it, a set of street tires/rims (worn a bit), old set of arms (still in good shape), new hinge pins, a ton of stuff. It's in really good shape, sme cosmetic scratches, but was a great runner. It's at Browns on the shelf now. I want $330 for it. If interested throw me an Email. Thanks

im having problems with the carb too.
the low-speed needle fell out completely when i was setting the needles all the way-in and back them out the right amount of turns to get them to factory settings. the problem was when i screwed the low-speed needle all the way, and the mid-speed needle as well, i got them stuck together somehow and screwing the low-speed needle would mess up the mid-speed needle. i assume i was supposed to back them in and out one at a time and not mess with the midspeed needle at all. so i got them unstuck and i backed them out so both screws were even with the needle-body-doohickey. i opened and closed the throttle and when i closed it back to idle, it would still get a little stuck together. i then somehow managed to spin the low-speed needle so neither side had an opening. i spun it back, and quite easily...too easily. in the process of all this opening, closing, and spinning that is when the neede fell off completely. is this thing going to pop out or spin around on me when i run it. am i screwed? (no pun intended) also if its fine one side of the opening has a little groove...does this face the fuel or air?

ICU are impressed with the new Pro2 . The handling is quite an improvement over the old one I have been running my now for about five or six weeks. Thought I had a fuel tank problem, but it turned out it was my fuel line routing had a short pressure line and a long fuel line. Change the lines around and the thing works fine. last Saturday, I break a rear shock shaft but luckily, I had just received a big shipment of Pro2 replacement parts Hot Bodies is doing better about getting replacement parts for their dealers. Someone was asking about the new differential gears, the new hardened ones are great. mind being built my differential. last week I rebuilt my diff there was no metallic in the oil. new gears fit much better. If someone would want to change their Pro1, they should get the new Pro2 gears . good luck with your new car

04-06-2004, 01:09 PM
yeah, I am very impressed with it. At first when they came out there didn't seem to be a big difference. But the handling is a complete different car. My old L1 had Savage gears in the diffs. Anything that I should change on the L2? It killed me to get it dirty. Another cool thing over the L1 was taking off the electronics to hose it down. the L2 you only have to take the screws out of the servo horns, take the first four screws off of the top plate mount posts, and unscrew the battery box from undernerneath. My old L1 I had to take everything out of the servo box, unhook wires...a pain in da butt. But this one is with ease.
I also bought those craddock brakes, I haven't put them on yet, only because this thing stops on a dime, so what's the big deal with these things? They would be cool when it comes time to needing new brakes, but I didn't see the sense in replacing them yet...unless someone can give me a good reason. (you don't have to twist my arm to work on my car :D )
cbr74
04-06-2004, 01:45 PM
Would it convince you... if I said that 4 Cradock brake disks weigh less than just 1 stock disk? And you no longer need brake pads. (one less thing to worry about)
I was running quad stock brakes... then switched to quad Cradocks (overkill BTW, you only need singles) and could FEEL the difference in acceleration from the loss of rotating mass.

RCILaser
04-06-2004, 07:23 PM
A nother advantage for using the brakes , is that you will not have your brakes fading towards the end of a long main and if someone splashes fuel on them, it does not affect them. You only need one disk in front and one in the rear and that will give you all are stopping you need.

Ok, so last night I switched the brakes to craddock brakes. A question I have. I had to take off the plastic things that hookup under the discs. You know, those things that the discs ride in to keep them straight. I didn't want to modify them just yet incase I decided to go back to stock. But should I put them (the plastic things that the discs ride in) back on and modify them or leave them off totally???
Another question I have...I didn't run quad brakes, only the stock setup... how much play should I have after I tighten up the two screws that hold the calipers in? Mine are tight enough to not have hardly any play (barely noticable) but lose enough for the diff to spin freely (but the caliper is touching the disc slightly). Yes, I did take the pads off. I'm just having a hard time getting them adjusted right. I have great brakes in the front, but the back seem to not want to adjust as well and I can't seem to get the rears to lock up. HELPPPPPP.
cbr74
04-07-2004, 12:53 PM
I took the guides off and left them off. They aren't really needed with the Cradocks.
The brake assembly is much lower profile with the Cradock brakes and no pads so you may need to use screws with a shorter collar length in order to be able to tighten them down enough.
luvmypro
04-07-2004, 02:45 PM
Do I have to use screws witha collar? Can I just use regular screws that are a little shorter? or do I really need to use ones with collars? Where can I get replacement parts for my L2? My LHS doesn't carry them yet. I already snapped my wing lastnight...very fragile. 1 cartwheel and SNAP! But if that's all that broke, I'm ok with that.
cbr74
04-07-2004, 03:35 PM
I prefer collared screws because it allows the calipers to slide freely and not get bound up.
Any 1/8 scale buggy wing will work. Just grab whatever they have.

One of the guys posting on here raced his last season and was winning. I cant remember what kind of modifications he made if any. I believe that you can find his posts early on in version 2 of this thread. I am not sure about the titanium parts being an exact fit. But i would give the company or distributer a call and find out. truggy... truggy... 2 speed in truggy.. ill post more up to date pics as i finish this project.. and yes i buchered the body (will be black to represent the outlaw effect of such a creation) so i could take it off.. take the wheels off and have 1/8th scale buggy to race also..
now more info on the 2 speed.. since i know some are dying to know..
front drive shaft in the rear is required, the corner of the fuel tank by the spur needs trimmed, a SAVAGE flywheel must be used, or mugen.. anything that fits a savage, the stock one pushes the cb to far forward.. the end piece for the 2 speed cb cannot be used unless you wanna poke a hole in the fuel tank.. very very tight tolerances.. the aluminum servo plate has to be cut by the throttle servo to clear the spurs also, you will have to drill 4 new holes in the chassis also.. i still need to taper the holes thats why it lacks photos.
parts.. besides a savage flywheel and a extra front cvd, the ofna instructions has part numbers on it for bearings and all.. it is like a 160$ conversion.. its not cheap.. but for my purpose should do well and be unique

ill have to dig the paper work out and look.. normal retail on the unit is like 125.. but bearings (10), diff holders (10), drive cups (10), set screws (4) for drive cups, and the still need to get brake cam lever and aluminum brace will bump it over 160 range.. should have looked on ebay instead of buying new parts nut i originally bought this stuff to do on a custom savage set up that i have not yet finished.

but thats how the truggy (lp1) sits against the lp2.. i cannot beleive how small these tires are..
http://members.aol.com/toungbath/rc/panther/1.jpg
im impressed.. i really really am.. wanna make a truggy... there ya go.. a set fo 50$ tires if you buy before april ends and set of 20$ wheels.. i figure subtract 1t off the cb for the added diameter and the stock gearign will rule.. once i get the foams trimed more.. honestly 1/8th scale buggy foams will work better with less work, has a note in it that says foams must be cut down 1/2" from the side.. which = buggy foams, but the diameter of the foam is too tall.. makes the tire buldge away from the rim.. so must come up with a cute way to make them not so thick, o rget softer foams..
well what do you think guys?

Ok well i just traded my buddy my rc10gt rolling chassis for a 645MG and a motorsaver offroad air filter. He hasnt ordered them yet, but i know him and i know he will when he orders his stuff. The chassis was pretty beat up and stuff, so i hooked up up pretty fat. Like hex drivers, nut drivers, extra tires/wheels, ton of extra parts, screws, etc. But i'll be able to drive it whenever i want :D. He just wanted it as a parts truck to keep his GT+ running.
Anyways, what are the first things i should get? I'll try to read through all of the lightning stuff through the next week or 2. Hopefully i'll get my buggy in by this weekend, that would be sweet. The shipping will only take 2-3 days MAX because the place is pretty close to me, it just depends on when he ships it out :(

boil the wing and wheels for 5-10min also.. it will make them softer and not prone to breaking..

Just an FYI...I have a Pro 2 that I'm parting out. Let me know what you want and I'll get you some prices. I don't want to post on ebay cause this way I don't have to take pics, take time and I can save money and so can the buyer. If you want some parts, let me know. 04-21-2004, 11:18 PM
well if its a 400$ buggy.. hard to say what you can sell.. the chassis/low cg stuff as 1 package, front suspention as another, bearing set, diffs, shocks.. then aluminum hop ups like shock towers i think it would come close to breakign even..
luvmypro
04-22-2004, 11:27 AM
It's not worth it. I thought that I would try it and am finding out that you break about even. Figure in the time it takes to take the pics, post, package, disassemble, and mail out. I sale Savage parts on Ebay by the same principle and they're not even worth the time involved. I just moved 8 of them over three weeks and lucky to have made $400-500. They have motors, controllers, receivers, and servos...and if you haven't noticed...the Savage 25 is the "happening thing" in the monster truck craze right now and parts move very fast, but you never know what you're going to make until it's all over. Sure try and put a reserve on stuff, your listing fee is increased and alot of times you don't get many bidders. You list the stuff for a low starting bid, others see alot of bids on an item, and they have to see what everyone's bidding on, and they then bid too. Seems like a great way to make some cash to supposrt the Nitro rush...but like I said it consumes all your time and you always have some people complain about stuff you can't control...the mail system. The Pro 2 just doesn't have enough "money making" parts on it to make it worth parting out. I can get them from a Distributor for a really good price and they still aren't worth it. ;)

Well my buggy should be in by next weekend. So here is my list of stuff to do before taking it out for the first time.
boil wing (softer for flex, instead of breaking)
put on new servo (645 for steering)
put in bearing steering (replacing bushings in steering with bearings)
wrap rx and battery in foam (rx and 5 cell pack)
fill diffs with oil (3k front, 5k center, 1k rear)
red threadlock "front steering knuckles"(put a drop in knuckle, not on screw)
blue threadlock metal-metal (engine mounts, etc)
check tightness on all screws (make sure no distempered worker trying to screw me...)
check linkage and idle stop (so i dont get ready to break it in and have the linkage messed up)
got anything to add?

Hey all, was wondering what suspension setups are working for everyone. Currently my buggy has stock springs and 30wt oil and stock wheelbase. Pretty much out of the box setup. But I need to tweak it a bit. On my local track it lacks a bit of on power steering and when landing jumps it gets very loose and I have to let off and let it settle to regain control. I was thinking a spring change and maybe try a short wheelbase. But would appreciate any help or info on what works well for everyone else. I'll try anything to help it handle better.

I already bought one for myself so this one is up for sale. It has only been idled around in grass for about half a tank to test it. It is perfect in every way, no flaws or scratches.Period. The body still has the protective plastic on it. No decals have been applied. Original box and factory extras included (some still in the bag.) Add your transmitter and receiver and it is RTR.
$400 shipped to the US only.

How does the lighting RTR compare to the Ofna mbx R2? Durability the same or one has the advantage? My lhs has the HB buggy but no parts for it. Lots of Ofna stuff though, due to the fact they mainly sell ofna rtrs. I've been told the old saying "friends dont let other friends drive Ofnas" but I've had friends with good luck with the MBX's and even GT LX's. Budget is about $350. Something with no radio would be nice like an Ofna mbx r2 80% assemb. w/.21. Ebay is out because my sis wont let me order any rc stuff from there. Say's its too expensive. :p

honestly dead truth.. if it were a pro id say go for it.. a rtr version is relly not worth it.. the radio is not that good, and for all it lacks vs a pro at the same cost.. hard to say its true value.. yes its a great buggy.. but the ofna will have more parts you can get to hop it up

It is the first pic part number 19240. It looks like it may a direct fit without any modifications. One of my concerns would be the CB getting crammed into the fuel tank. Does it have a differential built into it (doesnt look like it does)?

now more info on the 2 speed.. since i know some are dying to know..
front drive shaft in the rear is required, the corner of the fuel tank by the spur needs trimmed, a SAVAGE flywheel must be used, or mugen.. anything that fits a savage, the stock one pushes the cb to far forward.. the end piece for the 2 speed cb cannot be used unless you wanna poke a hole in the fuel tank.. very very tight tolerances.. the aluminum servo plate has to be cut by the throttle servo to clear the spurs also, you will have to drill 4 new holes in the chassis also.. i still need to taper the holes thats why it lacks photos.
parts.. besides a savage flywheel and a extra front cvd, the ofna instructions has part numbers on it for bearings and all.. it is like a 160$ conversion.. its not cheap.. but for my purpose should do well and be unique
it was back 2 pages :p and with a picco 26, it is insaine.. i had to loosen up the adjustment 1/2 turn from standard setting to be effective.. make sure to buy a 2 speed that has the shoe set up, so it will slip under a jump if in 2nd to work like a slipper clutch, the savage flywheel will move the cb back far enough to clear the tank if you do not use the bearing cap on the end of it. and the corner of the fuel tank needs a mod to clear 1st gear spur and the radio tray also by the throttle servo..

in the spare parts that came with the buggy there is a set of the other ones.. one is a +1 one is a -1 ive never sat down to figure out what is stock.. but you do have a piece to keep ya going.. just make sure to use the matching upper ones..
check out http://www.atomicmotorsports.com/main.htm link a page or 2 back.. they have the aluminum ones (30$ each) and the stock plastic ones are like 5$ a bag...
as far as k2.. they look the same on the kIII pics but my ability to even see kani parts is non existant in person.. no one sells kyosho parts that i know of..

Thanks CR, I already started putting the other set on, Just was not sure what direction +1 and -1 is. I am assuming +1 decreases front caster kickup by 1º (just by looking at the blocks the rear of the a-arms go up by 1º) and -1º increases castor front kickup. Just trying to confirm this.

OK. I still have my Lightning Pro 1...I need to get rid of it. It's collecting dust and is too tempting to throw another motor on it and keep both. Pics are still on Ebay, auction is over, but this way you can check it out. Item # 3185662470.
Here's the deal, it has no motor (it's on my Pro2), tires are wore down, and it needs the wing mount and wing (I stole it for my Pro 2 when it snapped). It has JR Racing Servos, is in great shape with alot of new parts, new receiver, read the rest on the Ebay page. I want $200 firm. I'll ship it for $15 anywhere in the US. I don't want to repost on ebay, this way it saves everyone some $$$. Let me know, thanks. :)

Well guys, looks like I'm buying my own brand new HB lighting RTR buggy. It's $320 at the lhs though..and with tax it will be more. I'll try to talk them into a lower price. I'd like to order from tower as I'd save some $$. Atleast if I get it from the LHS, they can help me with the problem whereas with tower, Id have to send it back and wait again. What do you guys think? Also what are the weakness of this buggy? From a few videos it seems to take a good beating (actually I think it was the pro vs). What's the speed like?

Ok got my HB PRO 1 all torn down after running 8 tanks for break-in. I'm going to fill the diffs with oil (3k front, 5k center, 1k rear)... and shim the diffs. The question I have is what is everyone running for shock weight and springs?

Well last night and today i've read all of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. So far i've learned pretty much every weak spot. I'm going to get a new wing for sure, and if worst comes to worst i'll make an aluminum wing mount. I plan on going with 3k/5k/1k for front/center/rear.
How does the engine react to 20% Byron race? Right off the bat i'm getting some 6x10 bearings for the bellcranks, some extra plugs, a 645MG, a Motorsaver filter, and the diff oil. Going to blue threadlock everything and red threadlock the front steering knuckle screws. I plan on doing all of this before the first run, since it's suppost to be crappy anyways. I'm going to be installing my 2/3A 5 cell 1100nimh hump pack, and once i get the buggy so i can use the radio box for measurements i plan on making a custom rx pack out of 2300nimh AAs.
BTW:
How does this engine compare to a 24.7 and an 8 port on a tight loose track? I should have the better set up buggy using diff oil and the better servo of the bunch, as well as tires. I know it's driver, but if the engine is just too weak i'll just lean it out and get as much out of it as i can before i order a new engine (possibly a Wasp .26, or a 24.7)

On the Ofna website, which 2 speed tranny is it that you installed in your lp1?
This is the one that i am currently looking at

It is the Hyper 7 2 speed part # 19240
Let me know if it is the same one
Also, i am looking at purchasing the 9.5 Ofna Torsen Diffs front and rear part # 49028. Does anyone have any experience with those diffs and could tell me how they are and if they are durable? Also, does anyone know if they would be a direct fit without any modification?

Motorsaver 1/8 offroad filter
Duratrax flash temp guage
HS645MG (steering)
HobbytownUSA:
Kyosho 7.5 wing
3k/5k/1k diff oil
This will be for my NIB Lightning RR i'm getting. Anything else i NEED right off the bat? I know the servos arent exactly top of the line, but they're better then the stockers for sure. I'll be 90% bashing and 10% racing, on a track with no real rules. The track is homemade and we basically just use it to bash.

Hey everyone. I had an engine question for you all. I still have the stock engine in my lightning and wanted to upgrade the power. I heard the stock engine is Force based, so I was wondering if the Delta Force T8's piston and sleeve would fit in the engine. I compared a picture of the engine blocks and they look the same. I like the engine I am using, but I need more power. Thanks in advance :)

Nitrolightning,
I haven't seen a part # yet for it. I know that it is a two speed, and everything should be a direct fit. ( and a lot cheeper money wise ) than trying to retro fit the ofna one. I will see if i can find the part #'s for you.
Kyoshofan420,
If i where you i would scrap that idea. even with more ports you still have the same block. And it will only push some much fuel. I got a NR P5 in mine and it is light years from the stock motor. Just save up for a good NR, RB or OS motor and be done with it.

erfgh! how many issues can i have with this el crapo carb?
well it might be me doing something wrong but here goes:
the carb will not stay put on the engine block
the carb clinch bolt was tightened enough to strip the head of the screw now.
so i have the carb clinch bolt stuck forever in there, while its not tight enough to hold the carb.
i can twist or pop-off the carb easily
has anyone had this problem before or know what i am doing wrong?
i dont understand since it USED to be perfectly secure and now its all loose.
i am thinking i need to glue it on or seal it, and i have heard with silicone sealant is the best.
whats wrong?
p.s. email me with any offers on rolling chassis' or .21bb engines any condition

Looks 90% compatible with my new Lightning RR1 i have sitting behind me. Only differences i see are the arms, raidio tray, battery box, and motor. The motor is a complete waste especially if you plan on racing the buggy. The stock motor is by no means a powerhouse, but it will get you there and it's race legal. I'm personally against laydown servos, i think they're a waste. The new battery box is pretty cool.. but i dont see how it's any better then the Version 1 box.
Well i got my Lightning in today :) I gave it a HARD day of bashing and only thing that happened was the wheelnut fell off, which i found and put back on. This thing took a complete bashing and i love it.
Just a few notes...
I don't know how you guys are breaking the wing. I did a 5' drop and 30+ rolls and it's still in one piece.
The body paintjob looks decent, but the masking wasnt on very tight so there are a few imperfections. It's also not backed at all, so it's kind of transparent and the paint seems to come off pretty easy.
This motor is great i think. It's not the strongest engine you'll ever find, but it starts on the first or second pull and holds a tune all day. It really seems to love Byron Race 20%.
I stripped the steering servo, but no worries. I ordered a new 645 and some other stuff for it a few days ago, so hopefully i'll get it in tomorrow.
It was 90º today, and the engine still wasnt running very hot. I had a great time bashing it though, and found no weak spots yet.

FlashLCD33
05-09-2004, 03:56 PM
The .21BB isn't a powerhouse, but it's a great engine as far as reliability. It would probably do great on small loose tracks where there isn't a long enough stretch to wind out and traction is a problem.
I don't think you need a cooling head, the stock one is sufficient. It was 95º yesterday when i was running, and I had it pretty lean. The max temp i got was 247.6º

i raced the pro1 and pro2 today.. lp1 = 8 port race with 14t cb, lp2 = rb ws7II with 16t cb.. was on front yard small track, very dusty/loose.. i was running 2 buggy clases, aka normal/open, normal is 5 min qualifiers, 5 min main, open is 10min qualifiers and 15min main..
i started off with the trusty lp1 on the open qualifier 1st, and the lp2 in normal 1st.. i ended up switching buggies between the 2... the lp1 was hooked up real good.. i swear it corners better.. and had traction issues with the lp2.. but then the weather changed.. the lp2 was hooking up much better.. but still lacked the steering the lp1 had.. BUT to keep up with it was fun to watch.. in the final 15min main, 10 started, 5 finished, i was #2, i lead the race for over 10 min.. in the final 2 min a rock jumped up from the groove i was in and sent me into a wall, turn marshel was not paying attention.. and took me up to the last lap on the final turn to miss 1st place by 100ths of a second.. but i showed all them other pricey buggies who was boss..

Thats a good idea to upgrade to the aluminum chassis anti-bending rods. The part numbers are Front: C8120-1
The part number for the rear: C8121-1
You have to include the -1 otherwise youll be ordering the one that you currently have. Basically anything in your manual with a -1 is a pro upgrade.
With the way that i have read on how you drive it, you should definitly upgrade the chassis too. :D On second thought upgrade your rr to a pro ;)

Also, what hopups do you guys think i should get? I'm planning on an MX3, set of tires/wheels...
upgrade your clutch shoes to aluminum 3 piece racing shoes or get the 3 piece racing shoes from HB part number: C8043 and C8045
install front and rear cradock disc brakes. I have heard that they are amazing but never tried it.
http://www.advantageracingproducts.com/page7.html
upgrade your rear dogbones to universals with these:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVD47&P=Z
also, if you have dogbones in the center in would upgrade those to universals too. If you want to change the rear ones here is the itme:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXV725&P=Z
I have an extra one of those for the front center but i dont know if it will fit cause my hex screw is siezed in place on the current drive shaft. I know that it is longer then my current front but the well where the drive shaft fits into on the diff is deep enough i believe for it to just fit.
Get the racing tires from HB part number: C8032 <-- awsome tires :D
get a set of ofna hyper rims:
http://ofna.com/tires-rims.html
Get torsen diffs for the front/ rear/ center:
I really dont know if these will work but it would be interesting to find out... If anyone knows if anyone of these or all are a direct fit into the lighting please let me know.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNV57&P=7
I think that is all the insane hop-up ideas that i can think of at the moment.
If you were to do all that, plus a ws72 engine, you would have a killer buggy :D :D  But all that is some serious money!!!

Hey everyone need a little help. Last week I broke the servo saver, part #8118 on my LP1. I have my regular computer in storage and don't have any links to where I might be able to order one. Could someone please let me know were I might be able to order one, so I can get it back up and running as soon as possible. Thanks!!

330-532-1783 they have 2 or 3 hanging on the wall.. :)
also any other parts you want call them they have a great supply...
for the cradocks check out http://www.atomicmotorsports.com/main.htm fast fast service.. and i agree on the pro tires.. BUT check out the panther tire deals they have there.. im runing the Chameleon on my lp2 and they hook up pretty damb well.. the med/soft compount is the same compount hb used on the pro tires.. i needed another set of good tires ad my pro1 tires showing their year old age in wear.. and for a complete set of wheels shipped for 50$ is hard to beat.. and you can buy more sets at nice discounts for the more sets you order also.. i ordered from him on a sat before 8am and had them monday morning! so customer service is great.. he also has LP2 parts listed on his page too.. but no anti bend rods.. but browns has them i beleive aka # above

i have those wheels with the Chameleons and so far for the price of 4.. like i said great deal on them with tires, are strong and not wrped/cracked and have a good 45 min of run time on them now after the 5 min qualifier, 10 min qualifier, 15min main, and 15 min from the last time i had them out, along with 5-6 tanks of practice time on them.. starting to show little wear but not much.
i also have a ws7II in mine with a 16t cb.. its sick.. but IMO a 8 port race with a os 20e carb on it runs really nice.. have that in my lp1... took the junk picco 26 out..

Junk Picco???? What's up with that? The Picco 26 is a great motor for the price. Easy to tune, fast, and takes one heck of a beating. For $160, you can't beat it.

its crap.. simple.. to me its junk vs even a stock 21bb.. the carb is ****, before you can even use it it has to come apart to remove the rubber o ring shavings that the factory makes due to lack of a simple process called LUBE the o ring before install with simple grease/oil, the carb is so touchy that if the temp changes 5*f that it needs a adjustment else it bogs or runs lean and when i say adjustment im talking about less then a 1/8th turn, the rod is not even knife edged, the crank has no turbo cut at all.. for 160$ why not buy a xtm 24.7 or a pro version for the same amount that will give just ad much, easy to tune, and has performance upgrades.. now we will get to the power band of the engine.. it sux ass.. 1/4 throttle = WOT in power.. it is so flat that i could use it for adjusting the suspention... i do admit it has not blown up yet.. but for the bs in th eengine id rather buy a engine that costs 2x as much, will last longer and have smooth power.. also when the 26 and rb ws7II are installed and geared the same in a savage.. the rb kills it.. and has such a smooth power band all ranges are usuable..
yes i spoiled myself with the rb.. but even so.. id rather have a 8 port with a os carb over the picco.. my rb 28 shipps friday.. :D

Well, not sure what happened in the mains CRSMp5, but those so called pricey buggy's you were runnin against, what were they. Probably a couple 9.5's, a few pcr's, a storm, and some other HB's. These were not pricey buggy's compared to the high price of the HB. Most were rtr's, for the same money. But next time your out with some "PRICEY" buggy's, let us know how you do. Maybe I'll be there. And trust me, it's 90% driver. :D

Which engine will be a direct fit replacement in my HB Lightning RR RTR? I want something fast but I am not racing this buggy so I WILL NOT be spending more than $150 for the engine. I have read that the Ofna Hyper 8 port (non-race) is pretty decent but I'm not sure if it is a direct fit. If there are any engines larger than .21 that will drop right in, I would definitely be interested. I want to be able to use a pull starter with the new engine.
CRSMP5
05-12-2004, 09:34 AM
any direct fit into savage will fit the buggy.. the force 21/25/26 will not fit.. picco, 8 port, xtm 24.7, rb 21-28, sirro 27, hpi s-25 i know do, the os pull start will be a fit issue and the mach 26 pull start may be a issue..

I will probably go with the xtm 24.7 or the Hyper 21 8 port. I love the 24.7 in my Mammoth but Ace Hardware hobbies has the 8 port for $120. Will my stock header work with either of the engines?

CRSMP5, sounds like you had a bad deal on yours. I've been running mine for a few months now, around 3 gal fuel so far, but my buddy and 4 other people at our track run them with none of the problems that you are stating. I'll admit, it took a little while getting used to the touchy tuning of the carb, but it's very simple once you get used to it. It's been a very smooth runnng motor for me, and the guys at the track love theirs. That's why I bought mine. How can you compare an RB to it, of course an RB is a better engine, it cost twice as much. I would hope it is better for that price! If I had $300, I'd have an RB too, but at the time I didn't. But I am very please with my Picco 26. But I do agree, the RB is a better motor, but that is to be expected cause of the price difference. ;)

I just got back from the Hobbytown...I picked up a Hyper 8 port. It was $20 more than Acehardware Hobby but I don't mind supporting my local hobby shops. I just noticed that the engine does not come with a glow plug. I use O.S. A3 plugs in all of my other engines...will the A3 be okay for the 8 port?
Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of the XTM 24.7 and the Hyper 21 8 port? I can't wait to see how my buggy is going to compare to my 24.7 powered Mammoth. I am finishing break-in on the Mammoth, running at 180-190 degrees, and it is crazy fast...I am scared to see what it's going to do when it's tuned and running at 230-260 degrees :D With the Hyper 21 8 port powering my Lightning will it be just as fast as my Mammoth?

I finished the break in of my 8 port and all I can say is, WOW!!! It was my first time driving my Lightning so I don't have anything to compare it to. This this is crazy fast through the entire RPM range. It was a pain in the arse to get started and right when I was gonna give up, I heard it start to turn over so I continued. Once the engine was started, I had a hard time keeping it running. It was a tough procedure but I FINALLY got it running and sitting at idle after about an hour. I got it broken in and was able to run a couple of more tanks through it and was able to keep the temps around 230-240. The engine is great and the buggy handles like nothing else I have ever driven. My other nitros are MT's. This buggy goes exactly where you want it to go even with the stock servo. I can't wait to take it to the track.
My Lightning is a Lightning I RTR RR. Is there anything I need to make sure I have extras of before I go to the track? Where can I order the spare parts from?

The stock servo works fine for a few tanks before it gives out. The only real upgrade you'll need before you can hit the track is some nice servos. You can go the expensive route or the cheap route. The cheap route (i went for) are the Hitec 645MG (steering) and Hitec 625MG (throttle). These things work awesome in the buggy and turn it on a DIME. 1/4 brake locks up all 4 tires.. as soon as i get my MX3 tomorrow i'm going to have to dial out some of the braking. The more expensive route would be Futabas or Hitecs. They're really just better servos, but they cost twice as much. They last longer, but the Hitecs are still great.

What's up everyone. I just sold my HPI E-Rally and bought a Lightning RTR1, it should be here tue or wed. I can't wait. A couple of things...
I'm wondering if the servo I picked up at my LHS today will work in my Lightning when it gets here. It's a Hitec 645MG but it's got the Hitec/JR/z connector on it. Does the radio that comes with my RTR use that? I can't find any info on the radio at all. If it does use the Futaba J connector (which I suspect it does) can I get the Hitec to work in it anyway? Like, can I remove the pins from the connector and plug them into an empty J connector?
Thanks, I'll put up pics as soon as I get it (flying over things, of course.)

The stock reciever can use either Futaba or the universal (hitec/jr/z) connector with no modifications at all. The 645 is what i use, you'd be suprised at how tight you can turn with it. I also use a 625 for throttle/brake, and it works awesome.

I'm going to use this servo for steering for a while then when I get my new radio (either the MX-3 or 3PM) I'm going to get a digital servo for steering (epa seems real cool, gotta love the gadgets) and move the 645 to the brakes/throttle.

Edit - He does need to fix that sidebar menu on the website though. No offense, but just make it stay put, up at the top left of the page. Flash, did the guy that sold you the chassis and brace sell you his personal parts, or does he have more of the same for sale. I'd like to pick up the Pro1 braces if they'll work with the RR chassis.
Also, I see you talking about using your MX3 to limit the braking on your lightning. I'm thinking about buying an MX3 but I'm curious if I need something other than my Hitec 645MG to take advantage of the MX3's servo adjusting features. I guess what I'm trying to say is, do you know if I can make end point adjustments on my 645MG with the MX3.
Thanks :)

The chassis braces are unchanged for the Lightning's and will fit all versions (L1, L2, RR, Pro)
The MX-3 has no special requirements for servos, any brand will work and give you all options. (EPA's, Dual Rates, etc)

Upstate Bob-
When i talked to him on thursday i believed he had just gotten a shipment of parts. The pro2 chassis, and pro2 wing mounts were NIP but he didn't have any of the braces NIP, so he sold me his personal ones.
I use a Hitec 645MG for steering, and a Hitec 625MG for throttle. I left the braking how it is since i put in the MX-3 reciever (TINY btw) because that seemed to fix it, but the throttle i had to limit to nearly 50% just to get all of the "extra" throttle out of the linkage. What I mean by extra, is with the stock electronics/linkage 50% throttle on the transmitter is full throttle on the engine. So if you go any more then that, it squeezes the tubing and puts quite a bit of load on the servo.
The 645 and 625 have no problems with the MX-3, as long as you have the Z connectors on them. If you have the Futabas, you just have to cut off the little tab to get them to fit.
The MX-3 is an amazingly easy radio to use. There are 4 buttons, Menu left and right, and + or -. It has 5 model memory so you dont have to adjust your trims and end points for other cars and you can program all your stuff for your other cars under a different model.. and all you have to do to get to them is go to the model tab and hit + or -. Do yourself a favor and spend about 20 minutes getting used to how to get to everything, and after that it's a peach. The digital trims are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much nicer then the little nobs, you can get it going exactly straight instead of just a little off. It has 3 other knobs, throttle trim and steering trim and dual rate. I just set the dual rate all the way up for when i'm bashing around, but i guess if your track isn't very tight you can turn it down some. Throttle trim and steering trim you just push the knob left or right and it will beep at you to let you know when you've hit it, and they go in very precise increments.
It doesn't have a ton of features (i wish it had lap counting, so i can see how long i can go before a refuel) but just what you need. Dual rate, end point adjustment, arc, model memory, sub trim, servo reversing and it shows you how full your battery is. It's a great radio IMO.

Also, for the braces + pro2 wing mount, you need some machine screws and nuts. You'll either have to buy some from him (not sure on the size), or if you have a Kyosho screw kit you can use those. I used the ones out of my Kyosho screw kit (the one in the little blue box) and they fit perfectly (with a little help of plyers getting them in to the wing mount hole:p)

(Just noticed you're getting some Cradock's) Good call, they are awesome.
I totally agree with Flash about the MX-3... bang for the buck, no other radio can touch it. BUT... you might want to consider waiting for the "S" version. (synthesized) Having all 30 channels at your finger tips is oh so nice.

The MX-3S does look super sweet, i love how it has the extra LCD screen to tell you the channel. As long as you're not racing with a bunch of others, you shouldn't have any problems with frequencys. If you're racing with a big group of others, definatly opt for the MX-3S.

Just take out the spaces.
Pretty good bashing around, couldn't find anything to make the jump bigger though :(. For a full type up check out my thread in the Nitro Forum.

Wasn't sure if anyone was interested, I still have my Pro1 that I'm selling, Has JR Racing Servos (High Torque for the steering), All new arms, diffs, pins. The diffs have savage hardened gears in them. Futaba radio. New Tank with extra new tank (NIB). Needs a motor. Chassis is straight, just cosmetic scratches. I want $200, but I'll talk to anyone interested.
Also, I'm considering selling my Pro2. 2 months old. It's in perfect shape. Picco 26 on it with about 3 1/2 gal. run through it. Venom fail safe. HT 645MG Servo for the Steering, 625 for the throttle. Awesome and wicked fast car. I just bought a quad and haven't messed around with the car since. (except for a ride lastnight) The fun just aint there anymore. I'm looking for around $550 on the Pro 2, but I will also consider reasonable offers, if it aint close to what I want, I'll hold on to it. I don't need the cash, but just hate to see stuff sitting around. I have an extra set of Savage tires/wheels that also bolt up to the Pro 2. I ran them on my Pro 1 a few times...looked like a little truggy. But would definitley jump better (landings). I'l put on Ebay in a couple weeks if I don't see much of a response. If interested, let me know. Thanks guys!!!! Also, thanks for all the tips and help on my Pros since I started with them. You guys (this site) have been really helpful!!!!! Thanks again!

I'm just about through with the break in, can't wait to start jumping it around the local BMX track. So far the upgrades are just the Hitec 645MG steering servo and a purple Ofna horn for it. lol Oh, I also masked off the windows and backed the paint with black so it'd be a bit more durable. Odd side effect though, the pink stripe turned red after I backed it, can't say I'm complaining about that though.

I'll try to get some action shots later today. :)
A couple of questions...
You think I can use K&N filter oil spray on my Lightning's air filter? I'm running out of my dad's filter oil and it's about time to clean and oil it.
How should the front wheel's toe be set? They came pointing out in the front (you can kind of see it in the top view) and I'm more used to seeing them at dead 0 or even pointing in a bit in the front with my RC10 back in the day.

an inch left of the fuel line is a little hex screw over the mini-axle. adjust the toe by turning the screw which will shorten or lengthen the axle.

Bob- if you're going to be doing some big jumping, be sure to get Pro1 braces front and rear. How ya liking the buggy so far? Engine start up right away?
