after many weeks of almost completely problem free running...i had the wise idea to slam my bud into the rocks. i figured i would do so in order to please the Alabama lake gods. but the real question is this...have any of you had to do any extensive repair work on one of these babies yet? if so, is it worth it? or should i just get a new hull and transfer all of my hardware?

alright, after tearing this sucker down and looking through it (and a little sanding) i have a plan. while it's down for body work, i'm going to put that dynomite motor into my nitro hammer along with the pipe. if i like how it performs the motor will stay in my hammer and i will get either a picco .15 or a mid-powered .18 and a mac pipe. none of the radio equipment was damaged so i'll keep all of that. the bulk of the damage is on the left side. the left rear pad is really messed but i think i can fix it. i'm thinking about filling most of the boat with low-density foam and reworking the glass using mainly epoxy and micro balloons. i think the foan will help strengthen the hull for a more powerful motor. i'm about to start learning A LOT about body work. do y'all think this'll work or am i about to waste a lot of time?

Hydromania has had to do extensive repair work to the airtraps of the sponsons after hitting a piling with his gas Bud. He ended up totally destroying the canard. If you want more info on this, go over to the beginners area and look through the balance point thread. You might also send him a message and ask his opinion.

the main thing i want to do is stiffen the boat. i spent a few days repairing stress cracks before my meeting with the rocks! questionable depth perception combined with a suddenly changing wind gust equals an ugly boat! if i do replace the motor, i'm thinking of a K&B .18 or a picco .15 buggy engine (7 port...i think). while i'm at it, i may cut out the radio box and build a new one. but i don't want to add too much weight, i want to strengthen this thing...not turn it into a brick.

Forget the K&B .18, it's a bigger slug that what you already have in there. Dirt Dummy installed an HPI .15SS and the water-cooled head bolted right on! He had a big increase in speed with his setup.

is that the water head from the dynamite? i'm really leaning towards a picco buggy engine. i'm running open top and i've got a wet exhaust. if that buggy engine won't do it, i'll look for something water cooled. but this boat needs to be beefed up before adding too much power! i'm glad i've got other boats or i'd go nuts right now. i think i already am nuts, cuz i keep trying to think of ways to mount my spare 3.5 outboard on to the transom!

I don't think I'd try to put an outboard on the Miss Bud. To get a hydro to work right, you need to keep the prop weight down to under two pounds. To get the outboard on the hull, you will need to do some extreme redesigning to make the transom area strong enough to A) handle the weight
B) handle the stress
If you want an outboard hydro, you should look at outrigger style. The outrigger design usually uses rear shoes to lift the rear of the hull, making it much better as a platform for the outboard. To the best of my knowledge, the only unlimited class hydro to use outboards was the U-100 Shazam/Miss Mercruiser in 1985/86. It never qualified for a race and was quickly abandoned. It fell into the "What Were You Thinking" catagory, with the 1980/81 Circus Circus four point hydroplane, which only qualified for one or two races. After breaking the rudders in Seattle in 1981, it too, was abandoned

i was joking about the outboard. but my K&B is just sitting there waiting for a hull!!!...i looked into the hpi .15ss, and that's a little rich for me. i think i'll just put the stock motor back in after a port job. now it's just a matter of doing all the glass work.

I figured as much :) I was serious about the outrigger, though. Something else I might suggest is a deep vee or, better still, a semi vee to put it on. To me, having a motor on the shelf is kinda like having smooth water on a rainy day. You just can't really enjoy it :D Let's not talk about glasswork. I have to make three cockpit sets and two engine cowl mold sets and plugs for my boats. I also have to make two turbine exhaust pipe sets and plugs. Guess that's what I get for building "scale" hydros :)

that motor used to be on my prather v-hull. but i've got a stock one on it now. my spare is race prepped and all that fun stuff. but there won't be a boat for it for a while. right now, i'm still setting up my climate blizzard. i'm also working on building a dumas hawk 3.5. so i kinda know what you're talking about. setting up these other boats is taking up my repair time for my miss bud. i think i may just buy a new hull, and make this repair job a rainy day project for later.
