i got a hold of a better camera...so i'm putting up better pic's of the mods on my hammer. the first is a pic of the fuel tank, it's a sullivan 4 oz.

here's a pic of my infamous ride pads. not for the faint of heart...they require MUCH larger trim tabs to keep the boat under control. but the pay off is a better plane and higher speed.

and here's the transom, all hand made except the rudder and the rudder arm. the rudder is from a miss bud.

last but not least. the wet exhaust. i tapped to 6-32 holes into the pipe. the one closer to the engine is for fuel pressure and the other is for the water. the pipe is from my miss bud. the engine really responded to it, and there was an incredible boost in torque and rpm.

wow u have alot of mods! i have been waiting to see some pics of that thing...

just two questions, y do u have a 12v starter belt in there and a pull start on?? And do those ride pads realy increase speed? i would think that it would decrease speed because of drag, how much speed do u think u get?

the starter belt is for when the engine is cold. it doesn't like to start sometimes! once it's warm the pull start will get it going every time. plus i didn't feel like trying to find a backplate if i removed the pull start. the ride pads actually reduce drag by making the hull run a lot dryer. it planes out a lot higher. this also allows me to go topless.

Hello BoatDoc, Nice work!

I am quite interested to make a pair of ride pads like yours?

I just want to ask a few question

1. The diemensions of the ride pads, the thickness, the length, the width and also how wide apart between the two ride pads?

2. what is the green stuff that place in between the propeller and the tube of the propeller shaft?

3. Would it be harder to turn with the ride pads installed?

4. Does it easier to flip over with the ride pads installed?

Thanks in advance

I saw these Sullivan TigerDrive units when I was in toledo & thought they were pretty slick. If you have to start it with a belt the first time anyway, one of these will replace the pull starter all together. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGFK1&P=7

the ride pads are 1" wide, 1/8" thick and 11" long. they have a piece of wedge at the front to create a ramp. the pads are made from bass wood, and the wedge is balsa. each pad is placed 1" from the keel. there was no engineering involved...just a little lucky guessing. but i imagine if they were placed another 1/4" away from the keel the boat would be more stable. and yes, the boat will flip easier. that's why i made the larger tabs on the back. they are little more than thin aluminun sheet that i bought at the hobby shop. in smooth water, this thing is a rocket, but chop requires a careful touch and a good set of nerves!

Dave, I got one of those Tiger Drives for my kids Nitro truck at the Toledo show. Pretty slick and would be great for getting rid of that pull starter plus as cheap as a replacement pull starter. One problem though, the shaft and bevel gear came apart on it after one days run. I e-mailed Sullivan and they wanted it back, it was the first one that they knew of that broke. They have a Lifetime warranty on them so any problems, send it in. Use a cheap 12 volt drill and it'll spin the motor right over.

i'll have to see if i can fit one of those starters onto my hammer. i love gadgets!!!! but i've spent my hobby money for the month!!! i've got two riggers to build, so my hammer will go without any new mods for a while.

i ditched my y534. the engine was spinning it but it just kept flipping the boat, and i didn't want the hassle. even playing with the trim didn't help much.

BoatDoc

Is your engine draining water into your pipe?? if i follow the tubing correctly it is
wouldent that just make the water pickup bubble when under water from the exaught pressure or am i overcomplicating things???

No you're not and no it won't. You have to remember that the water pick up is a ram feed, so the only way water will get pushed backwards is if you are sitting still, in which case you will be dead in the water with a boat that size

Well, I can't speak for everyone but, tinkering and doing mods is half the fun.
Thats part of the hobby, at least it used to be. When I started into R/c there was no such thing as RTR, ect. You made everything yourself and knew your model backwards and forwards. Today with the RTR's and such there are a lot of people that don't really know there model's at all. If something goes wrong or breaks, they end up at the LHS counter saying HELP ME :o .

So in closing doing mods helps you know your model more. So thats a good thing. Plus, as for the Hammer, there are some much needed mods to acheive a really great handling boat. Not just a prop change!

ya no i wasent having a go at you about your mods man , not at all i was just making a joke , with the puting on wings lol,

i must say i got a lot of info from your posts and your photos , so your doing well what id like to no is how do,s the boat preform with the rids on it????? more speed or no ???

ow and PS i was told by some one to put up the rudder some more , cos its 2 low , less drag if its up , i see the cents in that , ay so get back to me on the rid pads by

bertsbackyard-If your responding to my post. I did not think you were poking fun.

Boatdoc & a few others have installed ride pads, I on the other hand have not. I have done many, mods to my Hammer, but that is not one of them. So I can't speak regarding performance changes. I have no need to even try them for my Hammer could not handle any better I feel. Its a toy-boat for me, I get it wet here and there. I usually run my other hulls, but if one is in the shop  , it becomes Hammer Time!!! :D
