Ok, I cannot figure out what is wrong with my hydro but I think it is the flex cable. Looking from the back of the boat, the flex cable I have right now threads in to the left. This seems strange, however, because it looks like it would loosen if when the engine turns.

a left handed thread? interesting. yes, if it goes that way, it's possible that it could come undone. the stub shaft should have a normal thread on it. maybe your shaft was meant for a reverse spin (like in a dual setup). the only part that i have that is left handed is the outdrive on my 3.5 outboard. but the stub shaft is still a normal thread.
