i bought a BBY Racing Scat Cat 26 hull. i joined the hull and filled in all the seams with spot putty. sanded the hull first with course sand paper then with fine sand paper. when the hull was fairly smooth i wiped it down with a tack cloth to remove all the dust and oil then set the hull on a peice of card board and sprayed it with light grey Rustolium primer. i did two coats and sanded between each coat. again i wiped with the tack cloth and sprayed it with Rustolium Cobalt Blue Metallic paint. Two coats of that also sanding between coats. here is where i messed up the metallic paint when cured has kind of a fine sand paper feel so i sanded it with extra fine sand paper and sprayed it with a can of clear coat i had in the garage with out looking to see if it was compatible with the rustolium paint which is oil based i think and after i sprayed the clear on i noticed the can said acrylic. well the clear spider webbed all over the place. how do i fix this. do i sand it down to primer or back to bare hull or is there something i can use to take the paint off the hull. thanks for the info in advance.

You can sand it back down to the primer. You don't have to take it all off as long as the primer still has good adhesion. Also, you'll want to strengthen the seam on a BBY hull. Randy does a great job making them fast & light but sturdier doesn't hurt. Just mix up some fiberglass resin & pour it into the boat with the boat on it's side so it coats the inside of the seam & roll the boat around on it's edge to coat the whole seam. I've found that the Bondo brand of acrylic resin works real good & it dries quick so you don't have to keep rolling it for hours.

better get that sanding pad out :( Nothing you can rub on to fix it.
Regardless of what paint your using I'd think you'd always want some type clearcoat finish, unless you want fuel among other things eating away at your nice paint job. I don't know if you've seen this article on the web site but maybe it'll help you.

I wouldn't worry to much about the surface feeling alittle rough or dull looking, after 4 or so coats of clearcoat you should see the shine back and smooth feel.

I messed up my first paint job by not waiting long enough for the base coat to dry (about 5 days) that is unless you paint it all within the first two hours. Not sure if that was your problem or not but was mine.. I bought some acetone and took all the paint off with that a lot less work if it will work on the paint you used. I now use duplicolor automotive touch up paint and cleat coat and it turned out great after I wetsanded with 1500 paper and then buffed with 3M Finesse-it II and waxed it after that.. Looks like glass.
