I had my Losi XXX-NT at work the other day running it and it sparked a discussion about R/C stuff. One guy made the comment that he'd like to have an airplane but someone had told him that in VA, where we live, you are required to have insurance on them if you plan on flying. I'm about 90% sure this is false...but I still wonder. Thanks for your input.

Hi,
I live in VA, and fly quite a lot. Generally, if you wish to fly at a club field with a group, the club will require that you have a membership in AMA which provides a decent liability coverage. If you choose to fly models at other locations on your own, I do not know of any state requirement that you be insured. The other possibility would be if you have a homeowners policy. Most of these provide some liability coverage for recreational activity. You can ask your agent, and if necessary have a rider put on your policy. Even though insurance is not required, in our "sue happy" climate, it still can be nice to have.

Dave is very right about having some sort of insurance! Things happen , models even park flyers can cause damage to a person. Even if that person is trespassing on your property!

I am also quite sure that AMA would love to see state laws forbidding flying even park flyers without an approved (AMA) policy.

I am not a member of AMA and never will be . Cost to much! But they do have a lobby that gave us new frequencies etc. As far as state law is concern. Well I used to be a fisherman until they enacted so many laws that you almost had to call your lawyer every time you went to see what species was protected etc. I quit fishing if they do the same for RC I will quit flying. I do have homeowners on my planes though.
