View Full Version : Water Pick-Up or Water Pump?

When bench running my Shockwave with water pick-up adapted to the garden hose the engine ran very cool, however, when I ran it (for the first time) last night the engine seemed much hotter. I did some passes to see if water was ejecting through the outlet and it was really hard to see or tell. I have looked at some aftermarket pick-ups and they look as if they have much more tube in the water compaired to mine. Mine is mounted through the right trim tab and does not protrude very far into the water, I will try to attach some photo's.

I would prefer to have a water pump, can anyone recommend a particular one and where to get it? I am new to R/C Boating and have little to no experience or exposure so I am going to rely on help from the folks on this site.

Thanks

You're right, that tube doesn't stick that far into the water and that is most likely the reason you aren't getting any water. My water pickup sticks 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch below the boat of my boat and I get plenty of water.

Have you considered a rudder with machined in water pickup? If you have a metal rudder, you could also silver solder a pickup tube to the back of it. Either way, you would never have a water problem, as the pick up would be over an inch below the water :)

Thanks Maltrio and Hydro Junkie!

Is there a direct replacement rudder with pick-up I can purchase?

That depends, what kind of hardware do you have? I would go to their website and check.

This is the Proboat Shockwave 55, I believe it is Prather equipment, I have been to their website but do not see anything.

I called Prather today and they do not have a direct replacement rudder with water pick-up, I would have to change the mounting arrangement. I did some runs tonight and found the max. head temperature to be 206°F... what do you think? I do not know what the proper temperature range should be.

You could replace what you have withan Octura package for the rudder/strut setup. Prather keeps their equipment very simple and of good quality. I'm kinda partial to the Octura because I've been running it for years. Not the prettiest on the eyes but they have current stuff... water rudders, pickups etc..

But if you wanted to go all out, there's always Ballentines and a lot of other high end stuff to replace it with. :)

Thanks for the advice, I found the Octura stuff, but cannot find Ballentines, do you have the web link?

206 sounds just about perfect. The head is hot but it won't boil off the water. What do you guys think?
