I just got my Savage not too long ago but now i need to replace the spur gear because i somehow stripped some of the teeth off it. I'm not familiar with how the truck is built so whats the easiest way to replace the spur gear without having to take apart the whole truck? And is there a way to make the truck and quieter? This thing is louder than gas powered lawn mower.

all u do to take the spur off is losen the locknut in front of it off w/ the sliper spring and the gear will come right off

your going to need a new pipe to quiet this beast down, the stock one has no internal baffeling so its basically a straight exaust, and yes, its loud as hell

I think removing the spur gear is a little harder than just taking off the locknut because the engine is right in front of the spur gear and there's not enough room to slide it off. So is there another way of removing it?

you must remove the engine to remove the spur gear. Only 4 screws and removing the linkage to the carb and taking the pipe off is all you have to remove. Kinda stinks but thats really the only way to do it

the most common cause of gear stripping is incorrect gear mesh. you must pay VERY close attention to gear mesh. if you tear up a couple more gears and decide you have to go to steel gears like the robinson ones, be sure to use the hardened clutch bell, cause if you use the stock bell, you'll be taking it apart again.

there is a thread about savage pipes. read it. but you may want to ignore my incoherent rambling. dan busted me for sounding like an idiot.

Thanks for the help, i just replaced my old spur gear with a new one. I thought the gear mesh would've been set correctly since it came ready to run. I think i'm going to stick with my stock pipe for now but i might consider upgrading to another one in the future. Now my other question is what happens if i accidently dropped too much ARO through the glow plug hole and the carb opening? Will this cause any problems the next time i try to start the engine? It was my first time doing it and i wasn't expecting so much oil to drip out when i squeezed the bottle.

Just might be hard to turn over. Just when you are ready to run it just take the glow plug out tilt the truck on its side and pull the pullstarter a few times or hit the rotostart button a few times to get the excess out. Its just like unflooding a flooded engine

Shouldn't hurt any thing. As you turn the engine over to prime it for starting it next time it'll clear some of the ARO out.

Today i decided to finish breaking in the engine by running the truck lightly. I was only on my 3rd tank of gas today and i had a bit of trouble starting it because the engine kept getting flooded for some reason but i eventually got it started. Anyway now it seems i have new problem where my engine dies whenever i pull the trigger. I've already tried turning the high speed needle a bit and that didn't help at all. Hopefully i'll be able to figure out whats wrong soon.

i hope you didn't spend mad coin on actual "after run oil." prolong and marvel mystery oil are fine, and even prolong is a ton cheaper. mmo is practically free

I got a bottle of trinity final run solution and i'm pretty sure thats the propper stuff to be using for after run oil.

When you give it throttle does it kind bog then cut out? It sounds like you are rich if it keeps flooding and it is hard to start. I use Marvels Mystery Oil it have had no problems. It is very inexpensive and also works good as Airfilter oil

As soon as i pull the throttle the engine makes a click sound and it stops. I figured it might have been too rich and someone else in the forum suggested i adjust my high speed needle but even after i turned it about 1/4 clockwise it still didn't help.

If it bogs after sitting for 5 seconds when you pull the throttle -- it's your low speed needle that you have to adjust. Try 1/4 turn at a time -- run the truck a few laps and then let it sit for a about 5 seconds and gun the throttle.

Tune until you get the take-off you want.

If it winds for a split second and then cuts out -- it's too lean.

It is lean and needs richend sounds like to me.

Try turning the LSN a 1/4 of turn at a time to richen it up until it stops dieing.

Then if it hesitates after that try the same thing on the HSN

I finally got my truck working and i finally finished breaking it in. All thats left to do is tuning the engine. Even though the truck was moving kinda slow i still found it enjoyable to finally get to drive my truck around. Anyway i found cleaning all the oil off the truck kinda hard. Anyone got any good advice on cleaning? I have an air compressor but that doesn't seem to help in remvoing the grease. I can wipe off most of the oil but there's some spots on the truck where its hard to remove the oil.

simple green is the cheapest cleaner that won't hurt anything, but you have to spray it off with water after. as long as your truck is pretty much waterproofed, it will be ok. a hobby shop guy told me and my buddy that non-chlorinated brake cleaner is the same as nitro spray. i got some, and it wreaked havok on my newly painted parts and turned my springs white. i'd suggest not trying that trick. my buddy just pressure washes his, hits it with the air compressor and then wd-40. once you get it clean, the wd-40 is the key. it helps future cleaning.

Denatured Alcohol will break up the goop. Its good for "cutting through" grease and grime. And you think cleaning it now is bad, wait until you get dirt mixed into the mess. NASTY! But the fun of running in the dirt usually offsets the cleaning.

I just got my engine tuned today and it runs really good. I took it for a run in the park and when i was done it was a real pain to clean all the grass and oil off. Now i have another question about the air filter. I took it out and poured fuel from the clean side and squeezed out most of the fuel. But when i was recoating it with filter oil i wasn't sure how much to use. I put the filter in a small plastic bag and put some filter oil in it and mixed it around. How do i know if its properly coated or not? I took the filter out with the dirty side being on top and after cleaning and recoating it do you have to make sure you put the filter back in so that the dirty side is facing up? Because after cleaning it i forgot which side was which.

no that wont matter at all..as long as you got the filter good and clean ethier side is fine...and use enough filter oil to soak the filter then ring out some of the excess..
