He's making a chassis to fit under a GI Joe jeep body (about 1/6th scale) then using clod axles to make it realistic. Read the post!

It sounds like a pretty cool project. What will it be, puller, basher, crawler, etc?

badtodabone
06-01-2004, 09:05 PM
A basher. Sorry for the lack of info. It is a gi joe jeep body Maxxcrazy is right they are around 1/6 scale. I want it to have lights and be water proof for muding with good flex for crawling and have good power and speed for the desert. what color should I paint it?

I got the body mounted and have finished the frame. Now I am waiting for my parents to let me order clod gear box parts. They won't let me order them! All I need are savage shocks a counter shaft and a screw set

I'm sorry but all he said was "This is a gi joe jeep with a custom aluminum frame and clod axles."

I never heard of a gi joe jeep, so I had no idea as to what it is he was doing.

So you're saying that you've never heard of GI Joe and, or never heard that he was in the millitary? If hes in the millitary, he must be partial to jeeps (he was probibly made in the 70's when the Army used Jeeps). 2+2=4

Looks like a pretty cool project! Why paint it? If it's going to be a basher, leave it so it'll still look OK after it gets scraped up(I assume it's molded in that color).

I ditched the aluminum frame and have decided to build a tube frame that would run throghout the body and connect to the suspension. It will also serve as mounts for my lights.

What kind of tube are you going to build it outta?

Also in the very begining stages of RC truck project. All i have decided is that i was going to use a tube frame, and go nitro... Not sure what scale ,axles, or anything else for that matter. I am also wondering what type of tube you plan on useing. I have access to TONS ! of stainless tube for free, and thought i might use that. Because of weight it might end up being larger scale, but still doing research. 3/8th and 1/4 tube is sizes i will use... Also wondering how i will construct frame as far as welding or what

crank throw wei
06-05-2004, 05:03 PM
3/8" and 1/4" are perfect size for 1/8 scale. If you can T.I.G. weld it,that would be the best.If not, silver solder would be the next best thing. You would need a torch hotter than propane, like mapp,or oxy-aceltylene(best).Don't forget to get the silver solder flux and a #5 (tint)set of goggles or glasses. If you want to make really professional bends, fill the tube with molten lead, then bend, and melt the lead back out.Using this method will keep the tube from collapsing when you bend it.Good luck, and please post pics!

I am using 3/16 steel brake line and am going to weld it together. It will be very flexable

i'd strengthen the roll bar farther by adding the supports I drew:

wgbackyardbashr
06-09-2004, 09:03 PM
id say do the roll cage on the rear but not the front

badtodabone
06-09-2004, 10:44 PM
The pic shows the rollcage before it was finished. There will be more support by using rear down tubes.

crank throw wei
06-09-2004, 11:35 PM
I've seen them where they put a curve in the front and rear bars so that if it flips,it tends to roll back on it's wheels, rather than get caught upside down.Kinda like a ball. Not as authentic looking, but more practical.

hey after you are done with that one you should make a tube framed crawler out of a jeep power wheels just call me a mad scientest i just like to build rc trucks out of any thing i built a 5 hourse power go cart and put a servo on the gas i couldn find one big enough to stear it but when i do look out 1/4 scale fans

all you got to do is find one at a yard sale or flea market or mabe a nabor they are all overhere people throw them away every where plus they have strong motors in them

i have the motors out of one in my clod

your only 13 man you got skills keep it up and you will be building real monster trucks

chevy camaro
06-10-2004, 01:30 AM
sorry i didnt know you wher 13 the way you built that crawler you look like your about 20 0r 30 good job hey maybe you could bive me the specs on it i got a ten year old clod but i cant decide how long i want it or how tallhow long did it take to build your clod?

SARacer
06-10-2004, 09:04 AM
IMO i think the cage should be taller and thicker and protect the back of the Jeep too. But so far it looks good ;)

badtodabone
06-12-2004, 01:29 AM
again i am not done. The body will be white and the interior is flat black

Camaro the best way to steer that is with a gearbox. you would actually use an electric motor to do that hooked up to a worm-drive style gearbox, that would be best.

06-15-2004, 08:28 PM
dang how big is the body

chevy camaro
06-15-2004, 08:30 PM
hey do the seats come out if so cut a compartment out under them and build the seat on top of it but make it easy to get to to take the bats out

chevy camaro
06-15-2004, 08:53 PM
make a bed cover out of plexy glass and put them under there clouse to the seats to center the weight

Yeah,or maybe canvas like the real thing might have.Of course,he'll have the cage on it which might make access difficult.

chevy camaro
06-15-2004, 10:58 PM
well i am trying to solve that problem

Spoon37
06-16-2004, 12:32 PM
hmmm...

good progress so far, but I dont like the way those shocks are mounted - please understand I am trying to help your trucks development, and you dont have to listen to my advice(if I didnt ahve anything constructive to say I would say anything at all):

Currently the shocks are inclined so that the top points out towards the back of the chassis, as the suspension compresses the axle will move in towards the center of the chassis away from the shocks so the damping will be very odd(for lack of a better term)

it would be better if the top of the shock were inclined in towards the center of the chassis, so that as the axle moves up its movement is absorbed by the shocks. also I wouldnt like to see the shock shafts after you approach a rough obstacle if they are like that on the front too....

trust me on this, I have built many MT's using 4 links, I have screwed it up enough times to know what works and what doesnt. :p

badtodabone
06-16-2004, 03:20 PM
I am redesigning the suspension today.

06-16-2004, 05:36 PM
spoon is right.. what good will the shocks do if they only move back?

06-17-2004, 05:25 PM
I am going to make an aluminum frame and bolt the body on.

Badtothebone looks nice

BTW what type of mill do you have and can i see a pic??

also you should look into building your frame from 1/8th spring steel it's strong and light and flexbul also did you say your going to weld your frame? if so why brazing is alot tuffer then weldes on tubing cause the welder will destore your metal and make it weak at the joint's.why not braze it
