Well I have finally finished The Bladerunner Clod (I think). Here are the complete set of pics as it looks right now. After a quick run inside on the carpet (was raining outside), she is very fast, maybe too fast for what I want so I may have to change to some different motors. Now I can get started on my other 2 Clod projects..

Enjoy

Very nice! But what's up with the 1985 Trinity Monster Horsepower motor??!! :) I can't believe you still have two of them.

Thanks to all for the comments. I did most of the work myself, so the cost is not all that much, just alot of time and thought went into it.. And yes, I will be driving it also.. The motors I have had for awhile and just decided to put them in this truck. They are in great condition with very little run time, but I'm not certain that they will remain, I may switch to something with a little less top end and more torque?? Time will tell. The only other plans I have for this truck at the moment is to replace the motor leads with some new wire.. RC Jack, thanks for the compliment, it means alot after seeing your rides..

unruely, I'd also replace the tamiya connectors.. just to make sure you get the most out of your electronics.

but I have one question, how did you make that license plate on the back of the truck?

not to say anything bad about this truck at all, but you ain't seen nothing. there is an RC Monster Truck web site out there (a ".net" whose name would be censored if i typed it in here) that is full of awesome creations. just looking around has inspired me to dig out my old monster beetles and get busy.

rc pics or rc-mt?

Unruely
06-03-2004, 04:17 AM
I know the site, if you go there you will find that I'm there alot more than anywhere else. I get ideas from everyones trucks I see. I try to use what I've seen others do, and put it to work in my own design. I agree, there are guys trucks that make this look like an Radio Shack R/C, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out nad will continue to make my next project unique also, not for anyone but my own satisfaction.. It is what keeps me interested in these R/C's.

your truck is sweet, martin. i'd be afraid to hurt it. i guess that's why i'm keeping my savage kinda on the ugly side, even though i've done spent way too much on it. i have big plans for my monster beetle(s). i'm also "working" on an rc shopping cart made form a small planter, probably 1/4 scale. and my wild willy 2 should be arriving today. woo hoo! mushroom bugs me that i said i'd start on my real dune buggy (an original manx) after i got the savage done. hmm...

what name do you use there? i'm emory442

I have 2 other Clod based projects under way right now. One will be a hard core tube frame based pure crawler, the other I'm just now trying to figure out the side plate design on the chassis. I figure that if I built it and then mess it up running it, I can always rebuild it. I'm either "Unruely" or "Unruely1" on any web board I go to.

Sorry, I remember someone asking that question but couldn't remember where?? A very simple answer *It is a decal that comes with the body* Although I do know of one person who makes state license plates @ 1/10 scale for R/C's. He doesn't have all 50 states, but does have several.

You could always find a pic of a license plate, photoshop it to make it say what you want, and then print it out from your computer. I plan on making some decals for my savage soon from some pics I have on the computer. Just don't know exactly what to print them on.

lerningdriver
06-04-2004, 01:45 AM
oh, I see, from the pic it looked like it was three-dimensional. unruely, do you have a link/email to the guy you know that makes those? It looks like a great "realism" add-on.

dan- you could try and cut a piece out from a sheet of decals and print on it maybe? tape it to a piece of printer paper when you run it through the printer though.

i was just at wal mart, getting some paint for my wild willy 2, and saw a testors thing that was a decal maker. don't know if it's any good (it WAS at wal mart), but one of the pics on the box showed a license plate.

but i'd have to agree that dan is probably right

We need to see a few more cool builds other than the avg MT that is talked about here.

I drew the pieces using Autocad, and then cut them out with a sabre saw, then did the final clean-up with a dremel, files, and sandpaper. I have no plans on selling this truck, but if I did, all I an say is that it woulbn't be cheap...LOL

hey did that start as a clod or did you just buy what you need and make the rest and how is the articulation i want to make a crawler and want to know the best/cheepest way to make it

cretin
06-09-2004, 10:04 PM
unless you're a decent fabricator who can scratchbuild a chassis, there is no cheap way to build a crawler. the only cheap thing about one is the motors... mabuchis are the best crawling motors

lerningdriver
06-09-2004, 10:21 PM
but even if you have the chassis, you still gotta get all the electronics, axles, gearboxes if you need some.. etc.. etc.. the list is endless and so is the cost.

rccardude04
06-10-2004, 02:27 AM
mabuchis are the best crawling motors

Just wondering, why exactly is that? Does it have to do with the fact that they turn less rpm? Or the magnets are weaker so it rolls smoother? Just can't figure it out myself :p
-Eric

Unruely
06-10-2004, 05:29 AM
There are a few motors better than the Mabuchis, I run them in one of my Clods, but I like the Magnetic Mayhems better. You want a motor with single wind, and at least 17+ turns. The MM's are 22 turn singles with a 550 can and armature, therefore bigger/stronger magnets. This Clod will get about 70d of articulation, which works great for me. My Gecko chassied Clod will get 90d, I have it currently set up at about 70-75d's. Probably the cheapest way to get a crawler (if you don't already have the gearboxes) would be to find a nice used set of fully bearinged Clod gearboxes, then choose the chassis you like the best and go from there. Another option would be to find one already built that you like then add your own touches.

Martin

06-10-2004, 07:45 AM
well, i'm sure there are motors with better magnets and of course bearings instead of bushings. but the mabuchis are practically free, and they do work quite well. that said, i don't like them either. the 19 doubles i had worked fine. but martin, wouldn't you have to agree that motors are the one cheap part of a crawler?

Unruely
06-10-2004, 08:14 AM
I would agree the motors are one of the cheapest parts, even the MM's are only $40 for the pair. Right now I have different motors on each of my trucks, going from Speed Gem sapphire 17x1's to stock silver cans..

Martin

cretin
06-10-2004, 09:28 AM
well, i have a few brushed motors laying around, most of them trinity. their brushless bashing has turned me away big time. if i do build another crawler, i'll probably get the magnetic mayhems. anything other than a crawler will be brushless once i kill off my trinitys.

evaderstman
06-10-2004, 10:07 AM
he said he cut it with a sabre saw and i thought i would do the same since i have one but would a txt-1 or a clod make a better crawler?

Unruely
06-10-2004, 10:44 AM
I used a sabre saw on the skids. I am currently working on my own chassis I designed, and will be using the sabre saw to get it close and then finish it with a file. I have it design, but am just witing to get my shop cleaned up before starting on it. Between the TXT and the Clod you will get many opinions, but I would have to say the edge would go to the Clod, and I have both. They both have advantages and disadvantages, you just have to see which fits your style best. Both can be made into awsome crawlers.

Martin

evaderstman
06-10-2004, 02:22 PM
which one would work better with fewer mods though i want to make one but i really am not that good at fabricating stuff and could you post a pic of the articulation on the bladerunner

Unruely
06-10-2004, 02:32 PM
If you are looking at purchasing a new one, the TXT would be better out of the box than the Clod. If you are looking toward buying a used one, I would shop around for a used Clod that has already been modified. I see nice ones quite often that are pretty well ready to go. I will post some pics of the articulation later today, when I get home from work.

thanks if i were to buy the gecko chassis for the clod does it come with all the steering and drive train parts

Unruely
06-10-2004, 06:01 PM
The Gecko only comes with the frame and 4 link kit. It still requires a steering kit (he sells a nice one), motors, gearboxes, and electronics. Here are some articulation pics of 3 of my clods.

I made all the skids/bumpers on my trucks. I have a large sheet of aluminum I use. The "Ford" is not a cutout, I engraved it with my Dremel then blackened it with a Sharpie marker.
