I recently acquired a wooden hull set up for a nitro engine?
length 36 in.
beam 14.5 in.
very shallow V, about 4 in. top to bottom.
OK, i fly a little, gas also have 2 gas trucks.
does anyone know of any good websites or books on the basics of "sealing the wood, paint or other finishing techniques"
it is a build up kit, looks like someone poured some poly or something in the bottom of the hull ,maybee for ballast or just to seal, the bottom has some tpye of fiberglass or other sealer on it and has been half sanded.
also the brass tube "for propshaft?" has been installed
thanks for any help.

You can seal the wood on the inside of the hull by using epoxy, polyester resin, or 'fuel-proof-dope'. The quickest & cheapest would be to use the dope. The dope doesn't add anything to strength, but it also doesn't add much weight & you can freely slosh it around the hull with an acid or paint brush. The polyester resin is the 2nd cheapest & adds a little weight but it also adds strength. The third as far as price would be epoxy - it goes on just like polyester resin but is a little stronger. You can seal the outside of the hull with either fiberglass which is just polyester resin & glass cloth or epoxy mixed with the cloth. Sand smooth once it's cured & use a good auto enamel & clear with an automotive clearcoat mixed with activator (hardener) to make it safe for fuel. You can use a regular wood sealer under your paint if you wanted but not many people do. It won't add anything as far as strength, but you could use it. Fiberglassing the outside is really the most popular if you're going to paint the entire hull with no woodgrain showing. Does any of this help?

If you want you can just sand it smooth & cover it with paint so you don't have to 'glass the whole hull again.
