Hey guys, looks like i will be coming back to chicago soon... just might come out and play with yaz :D so did the racing season start?
Sunday May 1st = opening day
I am not asking for free race, discounts will be just be great. On the first day of race I would like to be there as early as I can. I will be there early might as well help. Being early will give me enough time to practice as much as I can. However, if you have enough guys I will just wait until they get done. I just want to be there to run three cars for practice. I have been waiting all winter to drive my cars again.
Looks like I've got my crew from last year all ready again this year, so no need to help set up. We should have the track ready for practice by 9am every Sunday.
Remember to check our web site on Sunday mornings before coming out, just in case we had to cancel racing at the last minute for some reason (such as weather or some bowling alley event that no one told me about until the night before).
It looks like I've got everything in order to be able to race this coming Sunday (and all the rest of the Sundays this summer) on the new pavement on the East side of the bowling alley.
Make sure you all make our opening race day, this Sunday, May 1st, to be among the first to ever race on the brand new asphalt.
See you guys Sunday.

Actually, for anyone that thinks that just one beer doesn't affect your driving, run the first round of qualifying, then have just one beer between rounds, and then look at your lap times in the second qualifier. I did that once... man did it make a difference, but I 'felt' fine.
You can drink and drive, but only RC cars, not real cars, but you won't do it a second time if you care about your lap times.

Walt,
That's an excellent example on how much just one beer (drink) affects your skill regardless of what scale car you drive.
If you drink, don't drive. An excellent thought that I wish more people believed in.
I would like to race but it's too early in the morning and interferes with my cycling (we start at 6AM and ride till noon or later on Sunday).

Hey guys, my friend and i are preparing for this sundays opening race day... things i need to know...
1. What is the fee for entering the race?
2. Is there electricity provided for us or do we need a car battery to supply for out chargers?
3. Are there certain restrictions for racing a car? like width, stock class, mod class, etc...
4. Transponder needed? if so, do you supply or sell?
5. I need directions :D ok, im near the highway but i forgot which one, but it goes to O'hare... so im assuming we go west? please advise on how or whats the best way to get there... this is our first time heading to Tinley and we would pretty much like to attend this sunday in a prompt matter ;)

still no word on offroad track?
Actually, yes, I do have some word now.
Tony (micro track race director) is teaming up with Frank and they are going to have another go at the off road track. They will race Saturdays for starters, but might add a weekday night race if there is demand (they have lights out there).
As soon as I've got their opening day, I'll let everyone know. They were out there yesterday and will be out there tomorrow working on the track.

I think that all the answers to your questions are on our web site: www.chicagolandrc.com , but I'll answer some or all of them here for you too.
1. (and 4.): $10 for the first class you enter, $5 to run in a second class, an extra $5 if you need one of our transponders. So, if you have your own AMBrc personal transponder and run in one class, it's only $10. Without your own transponder, it's $15. We don't sell transponders anymore, but you can buy them at AMB's web site or any of the better hobby shops.
2. We will have A/C power available, but bring an extension cord of your own in case you don't want to pit right next to the outlet. A cheap 100' extension cord from Home Depot would be perfect. We're adding more power out there tomorrow, weather permitting, so power should be no problem.
3. Restrictions... we pretty much only get guys running nitro and electric touring cars. Not too many restrictions. 'touring car' bodies, 6-cells for electric, small block engines for nitro. That's really about it, but see our web site for more details. If you are a beginner, don't worry. Only if you start making the A or B will people start to care if you're following the letter of the law.
4. See 1. above.
5. Have whoever is driving you take a look at our web site, directions page with interactive map: http://www.chicagolandrc.com/directions.htm
And don't forget to check our web site early on race day to make sure we didn't cancel due to predicted rain or anything.
See you at the track!

If you don't mind me asking, just how old is Cooper? I'm currious because I'm really looking forward to the day that my son will be able to race with me. He's 2 years, 4 months now. I know I've got a way to go yet, but he practices with his Mini-T already (I control the throttle, he steers).
And good choice on the radio. I love my XS3. The fact that it's synthesized is great, but the radio is also the most comfortable one I've every held. And in the year I've owned mine, I have yet to get a single glitch, no exageration. It's a darn good radio, and one of the best RC purchases I ever made.
Just wanted to let all the guys here know that we also have a thread in the RC Tech forum, in the 'Wisconsin and Illinois Racing' section: http://www.rctech.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=11
I'll try to check both forums daily during the racing season, but that one is much easier for me to check and reply to quickly because it is not blocked at work. For some reason, this forum is blocked (maybe they offer web mail or something... I don't know). So I can only check this forum from home, and sometimes I don't have time. But the other one I can check when I'm taking a break at work or eating lunch at my desk... you'll get faster replies if you have a specific question for me.

I do not think Walt's company's IP was blocked by here....it is his company blocking some general forum to prevent someone is spending too much time on forum chatting instead of working (exactly like what I am doing now....but, I control all the computer here..I am the LORD...)
Anyhow, what happened on the MAIN..? No main.....? Rain out..? I was in LA and the weather is horrible there.....75 degress, sunny 110%, light breeze since Friday till Monday...........horrible weather for RC, just horrible........

If you don't mind me asking, just how old is Cooper? I'm currious because I'm really looking forward to the day that my son will be able to race with me. He's 2 years, 4 months now.
Cooper is now 13. Kole just turned 7. Cooper started when he was ten and Kole started when he was four. As you know we race electric off road at Leisure. What I did was give Kole a low end radio that didn't have many knobs on it, and I either took his battery packs and made them 5 cells, or I'd take a piece of foam rubber and tape it to the trigger area of the radio, so either way when he tried for full throttle the truck or buggy would only go maybe 1/2 speed.
Take an electric car and make a four cell pack for your two year old. It will go really slow but he'll learn to control it without breaking the thing.
All of my kids were using computers between 2 and three so they all got used to hand eye coordination needed for pointing devices. I think using an RC radio is essentially the same kind of brain process.
Rookie is right on the money. It's not that Radio Control Zone is blocking access from my company, but rather my company is blocking us from going to this site. My company subscribes to a service that keeps track of web sites and blocks them if they fall into one of two catagories: porn (or other objectionable material) or sites that offer, somewhere, some sort of web-based mail. The first catagory is obvious, but the second one is to prevent a path for nasty viruses to get into the company.
So, either this site, somewhere, has some sort of web based mail, or it is just miscatagorized as such. Either way, I'm screwed, because I can't exactly put in a request for this site to be taken off the 'blocked' list since it's not business related, even though our company does not have a policy against ALL recreational internet use... just to keep it in moderation.
For whatever reason, RC-Tech is not blocked.
Extreme RC used to be blocked back when their web address had a 'xxx' in it somewhere. Now that they changed their address to 'rc411' or something like that, it's no longer blocked.
Kenji: thanks for the information and advice regarding getting kids into RC. 4-years old when he started eh... I've got 1.5 years to go. Well, like I said, I've already started with a slow mini-t, but my son gets bored of it pretty quickly and clearly has to grow a little before he'll really understand.
It will be fun along the way though.
Anyhow, what happened on the MAIN..? No main.....? Rain out..? I was in LA and the weather is horrible there.....75 degress, sunny 110%, light breeze since Friday till Monday...........horrible weather for RC, just horrible........
We were not rained out. My computer 'froze up'... literally. I think it was too cold for my PC, and if finally gave out just before the mains. Wouldn't even boot up any more. I suspect the hard drive didn't like the cold.
Once I got it back home and warm, it booted up fine so I took what results we had off of it and put them on the web site. But now I'm trying to run that computer again and it's not liking it. I'm thinking I might have messed it up worse than I thought. I have a backup computer, and most (if not all) of my files (Alycat, databases, etc.) are backed up, but I really liked that computer.. it was nice and small and pretty fast.

How did opening day go Saturday?
As was the case last year, the off road track continues to draw approximately zero racers. I have a feeling that Tony and Frank are going to throw in the towel on that track.
On-road is going pretty well though. Considering how cold it's been for our two races so far this year, we've drawn over 30 guys to each race. Not bad.

I have a feeling that Tony and Frank are going to throw in the towel on that track.
FWIW, no one has done much if any advertising or getting the word out at all about the Tinley Off Road track.
All the hobbyshops from Trackside, to Venture, to Al's to Chicagoland Hobby, Leisure and All the Hobbytowns from Joliet to Milwaukee should have flyers in them about the racing at Tinley. 800 flyers made at Kinkos, a call to each shop to see if they will display them, get a contact name, put 100 flyers in a 2 day US postal service Priority Mail Pouch, mail a pouch to each place. 50 dollars worth of advertising, and about 2 hours labor.
IMO, no one knows it's happening.
Minimally everyone who was going to race RSJ's (which is now closed) outdoor season should know about it..which means get some flyers up to Venture Hobbies in Wheeling.
Of course I wouldn't want to be the one to tell anyone what to do. :)

I would love to use the off-road track but right now I need practice. The only time the track is available is 1 1/2 hours on Saturday. Anyway that can be changed?
The original idea was that the offroad track would be open for practice any time the bowling alley is open, but that just didn't work out. They have beer and other alcohol out there that needs to be watched if someone is using the track. Plus, Frank found that if the track isn't watched, racers (bashers) would tear the track up and make it unusable on race day.
It's a tough deal to run an off road track this way.

The track course for the July 10 race was definitely a fast layout which challenged your suspension set up. Some cars appeared to be sliding through the corners steering with the throttle, others had an interesting time with balance (throttle and steering.
The fast sweeping curves required some calculated moves due the the range of drivers on the track.
Overall it was a fun in the sun day, as Lee Iococa(sp) would say
"Wake up and smell the nitro"!

Sounds like you liked it.. if so, I'm glad you did. I try to come up with a wide variety of track layouts. I have not decided on a layout for our next race yet (which will be our 2nd points/trophy race, on July 24th). But I'll try to make it fun.

Like wise..........TOLEDO, then HAMILTON...? Back to back MWS races after CHICAGO for married men like Walt and myself..? That is just too good to be true....too good, way too good.....
Hamilton is good enough.......Toledo is good, but I can only do 1.
I want to remind everyone that Sunday, September 25th will be our last on-road race of the season at Chicagoland R/C Raceway (aka: Tinley). It will also be our last points/trophy/raffle race of the season (unless it's rained out, in which case we'll postpone until the following Sunday, October 2nd).
I also wanted to officially announce what many have already figured out… this will be the final race of the final season at Tinley. I will not be hosting races next summer at the bowling alley, or anywhere else.
It has been a fun 3+ years of running races, and, overall, it has been a very rewarding experience for me. However, when I started I had no kids, and now I have two young kids. And when I started Tinley there was really no good place to race outdoors on-road. Next summer, there will be other opportunities for on-road racing outdoors. AJ's is now Intense, and they have a much better outdoor on-road program than in the past. Leisure is building a new 'world class' RC racing complex in Joliet just a short drive down I-80 from my location. There are rumors of other tracks in the works. My main reason for hosting races: to allow myself (as well as my friends) someplace to race is no longer so valid.
I want to extend a sincere 'thank you' to all that have come out and raced at my track over the last 3+ years. The vast majority of you have been a pure delight to deal with, and you made getting up at 5am nearly ever Sunday not seem like such a bad idea.
I will continue to race, and I am sure all of you will too, so I look forward to keeping in touch with all of you at the local RC tracks.
On a separate but related note, all off my RC track gear is for sale. I'm pretty sure I know everyone that might be interested in it, and have already contacted them directly, but if any of you are interested in buying a 'turn-key' operation to run RC races (you just need to supply the parking lot), please get in touch with me so we can discuss.
I hope you can all make it out to our final race, as it is the end of yet another RC-era of racing in Chicagoland.
If just a few of you had as much fun racing in Tinley as I did, it was all worth it.
See you at the track (one last time)!

This is sad to here. I just recently bought my home, got maarried last Sept. 10. I was planning to go back on racing full time after all my family plans. Also, Peter got transfer back to Chicago to work to Buffalo Grove for Siemens. We were getting ready to race for TP. I bought a lot of tires and part few days ago. I live in Bolingbrook now. There will be a new track @ Plainfiled but there are still not done. Walt I already missed racing as well as TP.
Is there a race today?

I was already reading all about it. Actually the track is about 15 min. from my house. I kept my 950 to practice. That will be great because I like 8th scale better than TC. I really missed racing Howard. Cherry was getting nuts about the wedding. We did the whole nine yards in four months (bought a home, furniture, wedding in the church about 175 guest with family members overseas). I did not touch my cars @ all because of the stress we were having. I told my wife that after all these I will buy everything I need to race. The great news is Hobby town Aurora is building a track and leisure is building an International track. Both track is about 15 min. drive from me :)
Well, I will definitely see you Sunday. Hopefully everything will go smooth to me on that day. My work is a distraction of my hobby :)

Someone tell HT Aurora that my track is for sale.. they can get everything they need to run parking lot racing at a discount price.
I'll be out of town for a few days, but I'll try to follow up with them when I get back.

Doesn't that mean that at the same time they're getting closer and closer to other people? ;)

I hope some of you guys remember me I was the guy always racing the Enzo and 360 without a wing back in 2003. I got another 360 Challenge RC electric, and I was wondering when you guys are going to start racing at the Tinley Park Location in 2006?????

Tinley is no longer holding races or any r/c activity of any sort. Look to either IRP in Dekalb or (ugh) Leisure Hours for permanent onroad tracks. Someone else may know of any parking lot racing done in the area.

You have got to be joking???I just purchased a car with the intent on racing at Tinly. I am in Hyde Park, and HTOakPark is gone for racing every other Saturday, and now Tinley is gone too??? It was a 30-50min drive for me in either direction. I guess I have to put it on ebay!! I was the guy racing with the Enzo and 360 throughout most of the 2003 season maybe missed 1 or 2 sundays tops!! Geez

I guess all good things come to an end. My life changed after I did my last race in 2003. I pushed my brushless TC3 to the brinks. I cannot say I didn't accomplish my goals at Tinley. Now, I purchased another Ferrari 360 electric Tamiya. Did the permanent track that was suppose to be created ever happen on the side of the bowling alley?
No, we never did the permanent track... just never worked out.
I ran the races at Tinley mostly because there was no where else to race around here. Now that Leisure will have a brand new permanent facility just 15 minutes down the road, there is no reason to run a parking lot track in Tinley Park anymore.
But if it's a parking lot track you want, I have heard rumors of a new parking lot track that someone wants to open in Orland... but I'd just plan on going to Leisure... that's where I'll be. Stop by and say 'hi'.
