Did anyone else see that Gene Hickerson won the 4th round of the RC Pro Series with this buggy? Its not the biggest race, but it looks like this buggy is going to be a strong competitor.

I raced mine last night for the first time. It pushed with the stock diff oils so I changed to 5000 front and center and 1000 rear. It made it turn so great I actually add some rear toe in to make it turn a little less. After that it was totally hooked up!!! It is by far the nicest RC I've ever built. Excellent quality all the way around!!

ive been racing my xb8 for 2 weeks and in my opinion its the best buggy ive raced!!Ive been running a mbx5 this season and this xb8 blows it away!! its a lot lighter and feels like a 1/10 scale!! but with the power and durability of a 1/8 scale!! i average 3-4th place at my local track and since the xb8, ive been 1-2 place consistant. I let a guy drive it, he uses a k3 and said it felt like his k3 front end but he thought the rear end felt like a mbx5, a little loose, but i have my rear end set that way.....another guy drove it and said the same as i did, light and very easy to drive. Well thats my .02 , this kit was real easy to build, best instructions ive seen yet, and very durable!!!, cheers....feel free to ask me any questions....

necrosuit,

i'm leaning very heavily on getting this buggy, i just want something different but to be competitive as well. my other choice is the 777 sp1.

i never raced 1/8 buggy, just stadium truck and nitro on-road. my question was about the durability of the shocks and the plastic c-hubs. what do you think?

thanks

Well, ive only been racing this buggy 2 weeks, not that long, but this past weekend i crashed this thing a few times, im talking fast 20ft jumps! it tumbled violently several times(about 15-20ft), and no damage whats so ever! shocks are fine etc...i love the c-hub set-up, nothing was damaged....but its only 2 weeks old...well see........

I have an MBX 5 that I have raced all summer. I am thinking about selling it and getting a prospec or the XB8. Can anyone tell me how the xray handles compared to the mugen?

Booyah
10-02-2004, 12:19 AM
I dont have mine yet, but from all I have read the XB8 handles a little better than the MBX5 and turns better than the 777, which the say turns on a dime......SO Im a little excited to get mine and start testing it out.

Yea, thats the truth!! it does turn on a dime! i ran an mbx5 all summer and just started runnin the xb8, its a lot lighter and turns way better than the mbx5! handling is better, it hooks up way better and can take corners a lot smoother....

there is a thread over in hot news and stuff forum on the V-spec. i have almost half a gallon thru mine now, and it isnt fully broke in yet but is already putting out stupid power at 230 degrees off the track. some are saying it out-performs ws7's and p5's hands down. me personally i have only hyper 8-ports and OS rg's to compare to...but that only makes the power this v-spec puts out even more incredible. ive only touched the needles once for the first tune and havnt touched since.

oh and yeah im saving right now for the XB8 next year.

I just picked up my buggy last night. So far I've completed up to page 23 in the manual. Thanks to the excellent finish on all of the parts, this buggy absolutely flies together.

What I like:
-Very clean, very well designed, and very complete car kit; they weren't kidding when they said everything is in the box. Even stuff thats optional on other cars, X-Ray includes (IE: the two different rear toe plates in aluminum are a very nice touch).
-X-Ray pretty much pulled out all of the stops when designing this car.
-No shims required to get the ring/pinion gear mesh right. The molding is so precise that it aligns its self.
-2 piece center diff mounts.

What I don't like:
-One of the planetary gears in the center diff took some coaxing to get onto the shaft. It was no big deal but it was unexpected considering the finish on everything else in the kit.

So far I'm impressed with the kit.

How is the steering on the XB8? Many give the nob to the 777 in terms of steering, but is the XB8 far off? I found a place where I can get the XB8 for $620 and I figure the $20 more than the 777 can be easily explained away by the free battery pack you get with the XB8. However, if it doesn't handle as well, then why bother.

atm92484_3
11-05-2004, 12:25 PM
I still haven't had a chance to drive mine, but based on the design and how easily adjustable it is, I would be very shocked if you can't set the car up to steer exactly as you would like. Stop by www.sgrid.com and read through the XB8 thread. Gene Hickerson and the other guys have quite a few good set-ups posted; almost all of them are for U.S. tracks which are generally tighter than the European ones.

Thanks for the advice. By the way, I just ordered one from www.ultimatehobbies.com where they have them on sale for $599 with free shipping. You have to call them and they'll quote you a lower price than they show on the website. When they list MAP before the price, it means they legally can't advertise the lower price.

Nothing is too difficult about the kit. Everything on my car fit together pretty flawlessly.

The only problem I ran into during assembly were my diffs leaking. It was more than likely the fact I was half asleep when I assembled them the first time, but when I checked the diffs a few weeks later, all 3 of my diffs' screws loosened and the diffs drained. If anything, it will just take some longer 3mm screws to fix.

Hey everyone. I built my first XB8 last week. It went together quite smooth. I have built many 1/8 scale buggies, and have to say that this is the absolute sweetest buggy on the market. I know this because I have built an MBX-5, and it was a bear to assemble. Things just needed work to go together, and the Xray went so smooth together. However, I did not get to race this buggy. I got my own now, so I will let you all know how it rocks. I will be putting in my OS VZ-B, and JR gear.

About the VZ-B V-Spec, this is quite the engine. I don't have the V-Spec, but have experience running it. It tunes very easy, hard to break in, and the most powerful stock .21 on the market right now.

More info on the Xray later, and build pics also.

atm92484_3

Out of those two, I'd get the XB8 (or even a Kyosho or Mugen). Atleast X-Ray makes their cars and supports them instead of selling someone else's car under their name. They claim the X1 is a totally new buggy, but judging from past Ofnas and their poor quality, I would spend the same amount on someone else's cars.

On a positive note, my XB8 should FINALLY be done today (thanks school). I'll try to toss some pics up later today or tomorrow.

So far I am pretty happy with the buggy aside from a few small details. The Hudy Spring Steel parts on the car are freaking expensive! I'm hoping they're as good as advertised so they won't need a lot of attention. Also I've had a small problem with diffs leaking. I've posted about it on the X-Ray forum and I think I've just about eliminated the problem.

Other than these two minor details, the XB8 has been an excellent buggy. All of the parts fit flawlessly and everything was as good if not better than those on the K2 that I was previously driving.

I wholeheartedly agree. Except for the part about the diffs leaking. When I built mines I built the diffs then read about not putting the O-rings into the rear diff so I took it apart. it was at this point that I realized that I had not tightened down the screws all the way and that the diff would have leaked had I run it this way. Basically, the shoulder of the ring gear was hitting the diff cup and it was not seating. I was able to build it correctly by slowly screwing down the screws until it is tight.

BTW, I got mines as a Christmas present!

WHooooooo, this thread almost got lost

How is everyones XB8 doing????
My friend bought three XB8s, one he kept for himself, one he gave to my brother for Christmas and one he gave me for Christmas. He the proceeded to slamming his into a pole at almost full speed while tuning his engine. Did about $80 in damage. My brother's is up and running and I'm trying to tune my engine.

I'm really hating the included battery pack. I peaked it at 1 amp (took a few hours) and it still only lasted about 5 minutes. Maybe I have a bad pack?

I just got this buggy and took it out to the local track. Man this thing is awesome. It is so planted and handles well. The track was nasty super rough and ruts everywhere. I have never had a car handle so well through the rough stuff it's not even funny. The mbx5's and 777's at the track were kicking and bouncing around the track while my car would just accelerate through it. There's this one tricky double that wasn't meant to be a double. It has a super rough sweeper and pot holes leading up to it. Well most of the other cars would have a problem with it they would lose drive going towards the jump or push too much on power and have to let off. But I would just go in there carry a ton of momentum and roll the throttle on and make it with ease. I had this big grin on my face after that. It could use a little more off power steering and little thinner rear diff oil but, WOW. I am going to dial it in this week and race it next sunday and see what it can really do. I can't wait.

Oh and I got the kit for the before price increase price :D rumor has it they are going up to almost $800!

xb8 has more steering than I know what to do with. you have to do a little dremel work to get max droop and full steering but then yo will be looking for a way to have less steering.

Im building the Xray right now. I looked at all the above but chose the Xray due to ease of adjustments and craftmanship. That said I would also have to say that there isnt any reason to replace the PCR unless your just like me and WANT something new and different. The Mugen is good but it still has some problems. The 777SP1 is way over priced for what you get. The regular 777 handles well though if you can get a deal on it. You might also look at the Jammin X-1. Its kickass and a lot for the money.

I am interested in getting Xray XB8 or Jamming X1, too. After reading all these posts, I am more toward XB8. Anyone knows which shop selling XB8 at the lowest price?

I am thinking putting a NovaRossi S421B on it. JP FX would be nice, but out of budget.

What's everyone running for diff fluids? I checked out the Xray site and looked over some setups but was rather puzzled when I looked at what people are running for fluids.

Conventional setups use heavier oil in the center, lighter in the front and even lighter in the rear. Yet most of the setups people are running nearly identical oil in all diffs.

I run on slightly bumpy, hard packed, low traction tracks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, i'm glad to say that we (meaning my dad) picked up a brand new XB8 off e-bay. Never run with an RB engine :D . I've heard amazing things about this buggy but i'd still like to ask what spare parts we should pick up before racing season starts next year? It's a nice thing that this buggy comes equiped with all possible option and tuning parts, leaves you with very little to buy afterwards. And before i forget, if anyone has any tuning suggestions i'd gladly hear them. The track we run on is really twisty and tight.
thanx everyone, i can't wait to run it.....

Radio Acer, I'm using Mugen 1.5 pistons in my shocks with TeamLosi 45wt front and 35 rear. I also like 5-7-3 in my diffs, front to back. My upper links are stock except for the front inside is using the zero bushing included with the car(1 up is stock) for a higher front roll center on tighter tracks. I also use rear brake bias to help rotate the car in 180's. That is less front brakes so the rear locks up just before the front. You may also like less castor, by lowering kick up, then the kit set up for a tight track, like 18-20 degrees total with 3 degrees kick up............Hope this helps, Jim

hopin to get an xb8 for christmass, why is this place so dead? I figured that this is a pretty nice buggy.. atleast from what I see. I guess since this car is so perfect there is nothing to tlak about XD anyways, I hope to get a c5bb to run in it, so far I have a decent servo with 130oz of torque and mx3-s to run. I know its not top of the line, but im happy with it. All I need now is a pretty quick servo for throttle and brak, and a decent pipe. Any suggestions on what pipe I should run with the c5bb? 063 or 086? will post pics when I get whatever I get

Anthony, I like the 086 pipe myself.

The X ray thread gets more hits at starting grid for some reason. But the car is very well sorted also, so not nearly as many as it used to get on either site.

you will love the c5BB, i run ws7II's mostly but i got a C5BB from RBMODS and wow, the run in was super easy. anyway the 063 is the most common pipe for this engine since it makes a ton of power, although alot use the 086 because it does make the MOST power but it is a gas drinker. the new carb design is great also, the idle screw is where you can reach it. now the xb8. i friend of mine just got one and he loves it, very nice and parts are available if need be. at the last track we were on with alot of traction he was running 5-7-1 in the diffs, cant remember the other stuff.

lol, both post at 4pm... kool, Ill lean towards the 086 than, since this is my first buggy (used to run truggies), I might pick up some carb inserts too. Figure that when I start getting decent I can switch out for some more power when I want too :D

savageP3
11-10-2005, 09:00 PM
i'd go for the jammin jp-1 (similar to an 063) for that engine. the nova/top/rex pipes are good but pricey as well. the engine is known for very good top end and decent low but i think the low end type pipe will really bring out the life in that engine. personally though, unless you've had an 1/8 before i'd go with an OS RG and jammin jp-2 cause it would cost about $200 less. Its what I run and i can keep pace with the fast guys-the only real difference is it wont last quite as long but should be good for at least 5 gallons if you take care of it. And you'll love the XB8!

i run the OS RG and the JP1 pipe and the car is really quick and OS engines keep there tune well. I think it is good combo considering the size of the car. Just had to say something on this thread.

I use a P5X in mine and it runs awesome, with an Ofna 086 pipe and Maxy's 30% fuel.

I have used O.S. engines in the past and they do run really well also.

Get the XB8r with the tq set and the XB8 front shock tower.

winning edge designs
01-22-2006, 09:50 PM
Imo, at this point the XB8 and XB8R are only about $150 difference. But you give up the towers, rear brace, universals, stiffer arms, and probably a couple other items i'm forgetting. I would go with the higher end car since after getting it ready to race the other $800-1000 makes the initial $150 savings insignificant, and makes having the best worth whiel due the cost of support equipment....imo.

Basically, there is not way to race 1/8th on a budget and be competitive. If your just after some fun with a couple buddies, you can put together the "R" model with a pullstart O.S. RG and a cheaper FM radio for about $300 more. But Ofna has some RTR's for about $350 complete.

If your racing you'll be hating the pullstart and the low power as well as the lack of a good steering servo in no time though.

I'm posting this because I and a few buddies have been thru it already and it costs more to try it the cheap way first and then buy all the right stuff......:), Jim

i'm no newb.i already have a power plant and high end radio.i just noted that many pro drivers don't use the rear chassis stiffner and some shave their a-arms for flex so i thought the more flexible xb8r might be the way to go.

winning edge designs
01-23-2006, 08:09 AM
Oh, I see, sorry for missing that. I have run the soft arms like the "R" includes and to me it makes the car feel lazy, or a little slugish, but that may be good for some drivers.

I modded my rear brace so I can add or remove bolts to alter it's stiffness. This requires machining off about .060 from the front two bolt areas on the brace so you can add or subtract spacers amd bolts as needed. It also allows for flex since there is clearance between the brace and chassis when not using all three bolts.

Either way they are both good cars and the "R" can be upgraded a little at a time if desired. I do find the CV style driveshafts wear faster then the universals though.

good luck in your racing....Jim

Dave, we have had good success with our bodies, especially in the .060 material if weight isn't critical for you. They come standard in .040 and seem to hold up well if properly prepared. This is by making body mounting holes a little bigger then the body posts and using shoe goo or similar in rub areas, etc. Also using a dremel to clean up any sharp edges that may turn into tears from scissor cuts and in corners as well.

Anyone know the diffrence between the XB8R (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=23057) and the XB8 (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=18874) on modelsports website?
- The latter seams to be £200 more, and caome without the engine

dhutch, the "R" version is the sport model, it is missing a few of the key components most races want. Such as more durable universals have been replaced by CV style shafts, plastic chassis braces are in the R as well as less beefy and much less atractive shock towers, as well as a couple other items.

The R will be a great way to get into 1/8th buggy with a quality product and it can be upgraded as the budget allows, but if you have the money up front it is cheaper long term to go with the XB8. Of course in real life "cheap" and 1/8th should never and can never really fit in the same sentence, ha.

I use a 053 most of the time, lately, but it is fragile. I have also had good luck with some of the Ofna clones, much cheaper then RB and seem just as good. For durability the JP series are the best though, I also keep a JP-2 handy.
Unfortunatley a pipe is one of those trial and error things, different drivers and different clutches may like different pipes. It also comes down to how well the engine is tuned for you.

NitroCrackers -

The center diff problem seems pretty popular among alot of guys with XB8's. I have it as well. I found out that there was actually a considerable amount of slop between the outdrive and spur gear. I replaced my diff. case and put a new gasket on with a good amount of Permatex RTV sealant and it is holding up ALOT better. I would burn up the center diff on one race day and now its holding up pretty well. Although a new diff. is the best solution they are not cheap - this will definitely work in the mean time. Good luck.

they have a new diff out.. i didnt know that. I havent been payin much attention to whats been goin on lately since I need my thorttle servo repaired. I will probably just toss a new seal on it and I have some of that rtv sealent like you mentioned. I think the diff is still ok, but im not to sure on that, it still has a free motion to it but I guess I wont know until I take it apart. If that doesnt work out, then ultimately I will end up with the new diff... Iv already dished out well over a grand for it, whats a few more buks

I have about 2 gallons on my center diff and i've never opened it to change the fluid yet. I have recently finally done the front and rear diffs though, LOL.

When I ran a Mugen the diffs were out after every weekend to refill and clean the cases from all the oil in them rather then the diff.

I guess none are perfect but so far the durability on my XB8 has been phenominal!

I can get any R/C part cheaper than "A-Main" and the well known eBay. New and sealed. Or you can stay with the used ones I got. What do you need, Panther K2's with Super Softs?

They're not green but yellow. I calculated the price and shipping; it's not worth the effort. Buy a new set from me instead.

Komodo K2's $16/pair
1/8 Wabash/Velocity Wheels (any color) $10/pair
1/8th Panther dish wheels (any color) $11.75/set
1/8th Panther dish wheels (any color) $30/12 wheels

These are just examples but not limited to what you need.

hey everyone. I've started breaking in the S7 II in this sucker. 15 min. of heat cycling so far. But I've wondering, I currently have two sets of Pro-Line Knuckles 2.0, but I don't know of any other really effective tire to use on broken, rutty, and rather loose, dirt surface and it would be nice to have a different set of tires to try out, but i have no idea what to get. I've been looking at Crime Fighters, Step Ups, Bow Ties, and Dirty Harrys, but i have no idea which one would work best. If anyone can point me in a good direction in means of tires on te surface i described then i'd really appreciate it.
Thanx everybody.

I only run the Knuckles when tire wear in long mains is an issue. Otherwise Crimefighters or Bowties are awesome.
I have also had good luck with the Panther tires, which are available much softer if traction is a problem. K2, etc.

hey everyone. Looks like this thread has either died or no one's having any problems.
Well I have a rather interesting story. I finally finished breaking in my engine after the winter, and when I went to peg the throttle for the first time ever it would die. This happened about four times before I decided to try it for the last time. This time I heard a crash on my garage door about 40 ft. to my and the car's left. The engine died almost right away. When i went to look at it (I didn't have the body on, luckily) i noticed the strangest thing. The flywheel was gone, just as if disappeared. The pins, clutch shoes, springs, clutch bell, collet, everything else was still exactly where it should be. Well I found half the flywheel on my driveway after a little bit of searching. I never found the other half. It's a rather funny and yet very frustrating story. Has anyone else ever had the flywheel break on them before? What I find strange is that I never took the buggy into the dirt, only ran it max half throttle on asphalt till then. Well it gave me an excuse to order a Werks Racing Clutch and flywheel, so I'll get around to installing that sometime soon and see if i can get this thing going.
Well I hope all you other guys are having a little more success than me

Xrays are for some reason not very popular here in the States. I"ve had a few of them as well as other brands, and wont run anything else. Quality is top notch, parts wear is very minimal, and they just look awesome.
