I'm not exactly a beginner but i have'nt had enough experience to be considered competent in this field. I have a viper electric boat and i previously installed a runner esc with a 17 turn speed gem motor. It runs about 15 mph but I've gotten bored with the setup and am looking for more speed. I've been told of the Graupner 700BB Turbo motor but am not sure what kind of speed results I'd get and if my boat could handle it. Any input or other suggestions? The boat is 24" long with a beam of 9" and my price limit for a motor is about $40 or $50.

Yes, the 700 8.4V bb motor is a good choice, but u will need to run it on 12cells, a new engine mount, a coupling (motor)5mm X 4mm (propshaft), u can use your original microswitch, or get a good ESC. speeds of 20-25 at least this way, and longer run times

Don't forget about the Trinity D3 or D4 machine-wound motors. Those have a lot of torque & can be had for a decent price now that the D5 is out. It's a modified motor for RC cars, but you can find a wind & turn combo that works. I've also heard that the speed gems are pretty decent too. It would be interesting to see how they stack up against the Graupner.

the esc i have now is a Runner and said to only handle motors through 17 turns. I'm assuming that with the 700 motor I'd need a new esc. What is the 700 motor in terms of turns? Also, what would be a good esc to invest in if I'll be needing a new one?

The 700 8.v is 9 turns I believe. An astroflite 212D, or R/C hydros ESC, or just a microswitch to 16cells. Speeds about 20mph or more, with a 35mm prop.

i have several 6 cell battery packs right now. how do i setup a 12 cells in the boat? Do i make one 12 cell pack or do i combine two 6 cells? I've never made my own battery pack before.

Does someone have a picture of a Viper or a website to look at one. If viper is over 24" and i just read 12 cells in one pack which means to me a 700-8.4 or a SS-I. Use two six packs in case it requires a cg is around motor area so you can balance it. Now esc get a Rc-hydros 60 amp which is water cooled and waterproof. Forget the micro-switch on 12 cells and also 6 cells. Forget 05 motors and car esc's PERIOD. I know, I know , you can't afford a good esc but you cannot afford not to get a good esc. If you can't afford this stuff, you had not better get into boat rc. If this is the case, build a boat from plans , say a 22", or so, use 05 motors and 3300 cells ( 6 ). As of right now i have a El lobo II ( wooden 22" ) which i just painted and was a prototype that was built for $75.00. Motor is a airplane motor using 8-cells and rpm around 35,000 and if i use 10 cells ,rpm will be 50,000 brushed motor. Motor cost me 30.00 new called Turbo 10. If you plan on building get a Chameleon #2110 for 22" or less boat for 37.50 from Tower.

do i just wire two 6 cell packs together so they attach to the same connector? i was looking at just ordering a custom pack from cheapbatterypacks.com with the batteries arranged in the "nun-chuck configuration." Is that what i'm lookin for?

What is nun-chunk? Just order two 6 packs ,side-by side order and have the positive of one pack go to the negative of the other pack. Have that wire ( 12 ga. ) be about 8" long between the 2 -6 packs with your choice of connectors. If you're just going to run sport; 2400 should be fine. Ok, if you use sermos, just tape around connectores with masking tape, just in case they get bumped around and keep from coming apart. Deans are fine except for me arturitis makes it hard to pull apart and some people pull to hard or get mad and jerk and that's when trouble starts at connector cause they don't see where they anything is wrong. Generally where wire and connector come together is the trouble spot. Just giving you dope on possible trouble spots.
