What gearing is everyone with a brushless running? I'm running the mm 4600 motor on 19t pinion and 90t spur and it gets warm. Am I being paraniod or is warm a problem? My titan 23 turn never got warmer than the weather...

I would like to ask this forum a question ...... This question is nto intended to be a form of bashing but as of just what I ask an actual sincere question ......
Why are people that do not race the Traxxas Stampede in a pro or semi pro level going to brushless for, when the options to save a bunch of money and still keep the same if not more speed is evident with a brushed system ??? I guess a more simple way of looking at it could be what made you make the jump to brushless if not for competition on a track of some sorts ???
Is it just maintenece or is there another driving force ??? SO to speak :D
LMK because I am a little vexed ...
Thanks to all whom reply ... ;)
Brushless is more power thats why most people switch, you can run a 380 sized bl motor and get more power than the best brushed motors.
cost is also a big factor, no one is sure how many packs the mm combos are good for but I have heard rumors of a mm4600 motor at castle that has 500+ hours on it, not packs, HOURS!. To get even 100 hours out of a brushed motor would be hundreds invested in comms and brushes, let alone the time waisted on maintenance.
I have approximately 20 hours on my mm system to this point, if it lasts 100 hours thats only $1.85 an hour, its $10 an hour worth of fun for sure.

I like my brushless because it is low maintenance, and has lots of power. Getting a powerful brushed motor costs a lot, not to mention the cost of brushes, which you are replacing pretty often. Brushless motors give good speed and torque, instead of a trade off.

Well i dont know how long brushless systems actually last, but many people have said that they pay for themselves after a while, because they are still running with little maintenance after with a brushed motor you would have gone through several brushes, and maybe a few motors.

I get the whole low maint thing .. Truly I do .. But if your not racing them why drop all that cash ..... Its kinda like when I race my bike .... If i were just going to ride it around the streets I wouldnt have dropped in the air shifter and bottle or done anything to the swing arm ect ect .... I chose to race it so i did the improvements .. I guess its kinda like why drop in all that cash when you can get that fast without all the expense ... Just my 2 cents .. I am not trying to flame anyone at all .....

Even if you're not racing, comm cuts and brush replacement still needs to be done. The cheapest lathe on Tower is $140. A Novak Super Sport brushless system is only $30 more.

about your bike.....maybe so. But I garantee if you bought a cheaper bike, and you wanted a little more "punch" to get in and out of traffic, it wouldn't stay stock for very long.
I like the free wheeling of a brushless also, it doesn't have the lag like brushed. It's more like a nitro.
Besides, it isn't that much more expensive for the Novak 8.5 set up that I got.
You can get it for around $200. :)

Does anybody know the diameter for the hinge pins that hold the rear arms? I don't have the car with me and I'm buying e-clips.
I've finished setting up the car with all the metal stuff but I lost the pressure disc from the slipper so I need to wait a bit until I can test it. I'm gonna need to slightly modify the wheelie bar because the FLM tranny case won't let it fit on rear skid plate.

Heyo...dissapeared for awhile. I pulled my TMaxx out of storage and tore it apart (dont have any interest in it anymore) and started messing with my Pede...
Came up with this...
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e275/P379XL/DSCF3170.jpg
Its essentially the TMaxx front bulkhead assembly on the front of the Pede, bolts on pretty directly. Im thinking about putting rear Pede arms on the front and using front wheels all around for a wider track. Just gotta adjust the wheelbase...I went from too short for a Maxx body to a little too long, lol.

Other versions of this have ben out for a while... HR has made one for a while .... The wheels on the HR were very small and threw you around a bit when you wheelied and excelleratede .. It was most likeley a problem stemming from foam wheels and their size ... This one looks a bit lareger in wheel sizew which should help and the tires seem to be a bit more able to handle the stress brought on by a BIG DADDY WHEELY .... Either way its just another 25-34 bucks they are gonna try to suck out of me ....... I say learn to control the wheely and life becomes MUCH MORE FUN ...

Anybody has any advice on buying crystals? I use an Airtronics MX-3 and would like to have options for different frequencies in case I ever take the car to a racing track, which believe it or not I've never done. I believe the MX-3 has some sort of capability of handling different frequencies and even has several memories for different profiles but I'm really ignorant on the whole transmission/reception world.

Great thanks very much!
Unfortunately the only 2-3 LHS' in the whole country don't have much parts or accesories (i.e. THEY SUCK!).
But I'll buy these online same as I do with everything else. What frequencies would you buy to be sure you won't have a conflict?
On a different subject, has anybody ever seen any sort of device (hidraulic or electronic) that'll lift up the car and set it back on its wheels after rolling over? I'm seriously considering attaching a stinger adapted to somehow lift up the car, those long walks are the worst! (you must think I'm 80) I've seen rc's with cameras and flame throwers so I'm sure it's not impossible...

For some reason...I knew you were gonna say that! LOL I've noticed on some videos that people tend to use the low config for the shocks, more of a rustler style setup for more control I guess, but I really like the high setup with the strong springs, which causes the car to roll over a lot more. Anyhow. Waiting for the rep clutch discs to come...

Looking at the damage I've done to the alum wheelie bar...I definitely need to use it! It also protects the Integy heatsink/fan. And again, I know, I should drive better! I like rough driving which inevitably brings along lots of accidents and damage. That looks like a really nice wheelie bar for a stock setup so that you don't sharpen the plastic motor cover into a plastic knife.
Anybody knows what the additional screwholes are for on the FLM tranny case? Looks like you could use a cover/protector for the motor but I'm not sure what'd fit there.

Got my slipper clutch replacement parts last night so I was finally able to test the alum spur gear. IT ROCKS. I know I have to test it for a few more drives to really test the endurance of the item but so far so good, all the gears couldn't be running any tighter, the car is strong as a rock now. And FLM's alum driveshafts are way stronger than MIP CVD's and with better volume for torque. I adjusted the stock chassis to the top of the FLM chassis and it's almost a perfect fit, only had to trim the borders around the steering servo since it's already installed on the alum, and added a piece of plastic on the rear end to use screws to hold the back part of the plastic chassis from below, using the two last screw holes on the stock piece, now the battery and electronics will stay in place, it's the best way to do it for sure and I don't mind the extra weight, actually adds control.
Anyhow, hope this helps somebody wanting to switch to metal!

03-09-2007, 02:00 PM
Just tell us when it rips up some gear inside your transmission. :D
Speaking of FLM, do the wide arms fit perfectly on the stock chassis? They aren't too expensive, and look nice + strength. My other question is would they make another part of the car start to break, since they no longer give at all? If i got the wide arms (assuming they fit the stock chassis) then are there any other parts i would need that don't come with them? screws, camber links, etc.
thanks

I took my P2K2 Pro out and tried out this silver can Black and Decker drill motor from a broken drill. It doesnt launch as hard as my P2K2 but I would say it pulls a little harder on the mid range and goes about the same speed. I think I'll leave it in for awhile and see what run times look like.

I had an RPM front bumper for awhile. I setup a ramp on my front porch at my old place (it was 12' x 60+'....HUGE)....basically a 5' vertical height at the ramps top. I jumped the truck off and accidentally nose planted it. Ripped the mounting screws for the RPM bumper clean out of the bulkhead. Havent had a front bumper since, lol.

So I was hitting some snow banks the other day, getting about 4' of height with the 'Pede, and landed one bad after about 20 jumps. The rear A-arm was hanging and I thought I would just replace the arm, an easy fix. Upon closer exam, I saw the arm was intact, but the arm mount had broken off the transmission housing.
I'm amazed. Every other car I have has a separate bulkhead where the arms attach (even my Micro-T). Now I have to replace the whole tranny casing. Drat!

TunaCan, I picked up some of the Team Brood batts as well. I got two 6 cell packs of IB 3800's and one six cell pack of IB4200's for a little over $60 shipped.
I can't wait to get them together and see how they do in my Pede! :D
It's starting to look like spring in Michigan....
NOICE!!!
They should ship tomorrow! Maybe four new packs would be too much. I guess I'll solder up some eights. By the way, the Mamba 7700 motor restricts me to eight cells tops. So the 10 to 12 cell recommendation can't happen. Good thinking though... :)
the mm 5700 on eight was a beast in my pede, the 7700 and eight will be sick for sure, reglue your tires, one of my mashers got ruined when 90% of it peeled off and the other 10% was holding on at 40mph or so, big wreak of course.

Today I managed to loosen up a bunch of stuff. The front A-Arm screw backed out and bent, I got it back in now. The screw holding the shock to the shock tower backed out, I found it in the grass and no problem. Then the e-clips fell off and my bearing carrier fell off the caster block. Get the Rustler body mount kit, part number TRX1914. Mount the fronts like I have on mine, and modify the rear posts to match mine as well. I run a nitro rustler body on mine, so a jato body couldn't be TOO different :p

MrCrash

You need to make some spacers for the front arms around the bulkhead and caster blocks, but it went in easily overall. www.stampedeproject.com has a great tutorial on how to do it. I kinda mixed and matched between the different methods, and it turned out great!

Gonna get outside pics tomorrow. Truck looks terrible in these...

I saw this on another forum and wanted to do it: LED bumper lights.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e275/P379XL/DSCF3616.jpg
They are in the holes at either end of the bumper. I had some extra blue LED's and figured why not. They are very handy when driving at night.
I need to order some parts soon. I tossed the battery and ESC clean out of the truck last night...twice. Zip ties just arent working for securement. Also ripped out the connections to the LEDs...gotta rewire that.
BTW, any suggestions for some affordable, high MAh stickpack? (like 3000 and up). My Tower pack has about had it and Im looking to get some more juice for longer run times...especially if I upgrade to BL one day.
Thanks.

Anyone know which Mamba Max system will work best with my new 2006 pede? I will be dirt racing/offroad racing mostly but will also be bashing with it. i would like speed but not so it's uncontrolable (i'm just a beginner).Which ever system i do get which batteries should I get... i'm thinking i would need one or two for strictly for racing and a few others just for bashing around...hopefully they would have a fairly long run time.

Try these:
Check the tyres are glued properly
Make sure your diff isn't knacked
Make sure the spur gear pin is there
Revolt Racer - I run the mm 4600 system on cheapo 3700mah packs with great performance and rediculous runtimes (30 mins bashing). You don't need expensive batteries for this system to avoid the lag effect which other systems suffer from.

Toothypaste
03-23-2007, 02:00 PM
Aluminium idler gear, mip cvds and a smaller pinion gear are probably a good idea. Maybe you could consider some new bearings in your gearbox, rpm bearing carriers (and the larger bearings) and some tyre glue (:D)
All of that can be bought from tower hobbies.
If you want to go really nuts, then you can buy an aluminium diff gear from www.rc-monster.com but that isn't necessary unless you are putting anything that a mamba max can't handle through it.
MrCrash
03-23-2007, 04:04 PM
If you don't want to go with cvds, you could do a 1/8 drivetrain conversion.
You could always do what I did. Buy the motor, put it in, and upgrade what breaks :p

I never thought it possible, but I think I finally have a setup with too much power. 2006 'Pede with Mamba Max 7700 on IB4200 8-packs. It will pull wheelies at 30 MPH. Very hard to control with the stock 2.8 Talons.
Are there tires that give better control at high speed? Not road rage's or road hawgz, I still want off-road tires on it.
How much money would it cost to do the wide-pede conversion?

I dont knwo about the wide kit but you may want to try some MOABS .... thsoe things stick like glue to everything ..... They are quiet on the street and have the ability to grab onto anything and everything you come into contact ..... Bad part is like every tall truck you really need to slow down for the turns while your on the street or TOPPLESVILLE you go .... The upside is that they work great in every other application you come across ....
Give em a try .... they are for 2.2 rims but with the added heigth of the Moabs you actually increase a slight bit from the 2.8's you have on your ride now ..... I cant say enough about them ... 100% improvement from any other tire i have used ....... Lets face it folks in 17yrs of having one of these trucks I have gone through my fair share of tires ..... Thats just my 2 cents, I could be ( but i am not :D ) wrong ..... :D

Wheelies are easy in the pede .... One of the many pleasures of Pede ownership ...... 30mph is a drop in the bucket if you put a decent powerplant in it and some gearing .... Check the for sale forum and look under custom paint for sale by hyjacker ..... he put a video of my pede in there on the second page i think ..... LMK whatcha think of it ..... How long do moabs or similar M2 tyres last before they become slicks?
Well it depends on where and how often you drive. My Moabs have lasted for more than a year with a lot of tread left, but I don't really drive my truck too frequently. I would say you can safely expect months of good operation from M2 tires like these.

How much power did you have pushing that idler ......LOL ..... Bushings should be replaced as soon as you have the funds to do it with any RC ..... They are not condusive to speed or long run times ..... The shocks are a good hopup to get because you can never go wrong with suspention .. I have had a great amount of luck with Evader St shocks .... Besides the fact that they are chrome (SHINIES ARE NICE) they are rebuildable . The servo is fine for normal running ..... I have had my share or servo transplants and the 2055 and the 2018 still work just fine for "normal Bashing " other than that get something with some beef and bearings to it ... I think for an out of the box RTR bash-o-matic rc you cant beat it ... :D

BIGDADDYV
03-29-2007, 11:20 PM
Tower and ebay are where i find mine ......
this darn hobby, the kid ain't even got the pede yet and he is wanting option parts, all kidding aside if this is your first pede you will be suprised it will be way tougher than any st for sure. I have never got any wheel time with the xl 5 but saw one at the lhs and it was much faster than the old stinger version, you can spend a ton making a custom pede but its much more fun to leave it closer to stock so you ain't scared to beat the heck out of it, that way the breakage is less and cheaper IMO. Its like a good meal, the receipes for building a bash proof peded is in these 57 pages it just depends on which one you follow, $1000 flm ultrapede or sensible options for go not show, I have kept my bl systems out of the pede as much as possible as the 40-55mph crashes are much worse than the 20-30 mph crashes with a stinger or mod motor but I understand the need for speed also.

03-30-2007, 09:22 AM
Yeah, I know what you mean. I went with the Mamba Max 4600 and some 6 Cell IB3800 packs for long runtimes and good (not insane) speed. I think putting a crazy fast brushless system in the Pede isn't really a good idea. I would think you would tear up the drivetrain. Not to mention you still have to SLOW DOWN to turn the thing around. If you want to make high speed runs get an on-road TC or maybe a Jato 3.3  .
My Mamba is at the LHS getting a Deans connector put on it, and my batteries packs are being assembled as we speak! If I have time this weekend (and if the weather is OK) I'll take it out for a test run. I have to take it easy though because it has no body yet. I hope to paint that next weekend. if thats your plan and you have never owned a Pede before i would say invest ins some a-arms and an idler gear too .... with all that juice your gonna lose control at some point and your going to crash .. ( not as if i am talking from experience or anything :D ) and the idler is for when you roast the stock one by putting that much power behind a stock rear in the Pede ..... It will take a beating no doubt but the Mamba has some serious torque .... A roasted idler makes a really great day really really BAD day :( .. ( form experience also ) .... You may also want to keep in mind that when ever you take your pede apart REGREASE EVERYTHING you reassymble .... A word to the wise .. I would invest in bearings before the Mamba ... Make everything else as good as the powerplant and your performance is going to be a whole bunch better ....
When folks ask me what should be my first hop ups i put on my pede the list is just like this .......
BEARINGS
Aluminum Idler
MIP CVD's
Shocks ( what ever your favorite brand are ... I personally like the Evader St shocks )
buy some spare spurs and pinions to experiment with and leave the rest alone until your done learning to run it and beating the stock stuff to death ..... Have fun thats the bottom line ....

Can you use the Nitro Evader ST shocks or just the electric Evader ST ones? Can you use Losi or Associated springs with them?
Yeah, I'm thinking it be long before I get CVD's for my Pede with a Mamba Max powering it. I have two sets of the rear universals so when the first one brakes I can slap the spares in and then order the CVD's.

you can use those also but you need to change the eye screw on the bottom of your shock ..... Its pretty simple to just unscrew the stock one on your shock and put it on the ones you plan on using .... The top mounts really all depend on what you use really .... I havent had too much experience in the way of Losi shocks .. Jut make sure the eyes are large enough to use the Pedes stock screw for the best amount of fastening .... As far as the Nitros VS Electric Evaders go .. I have only used electric but take a look and if the Nitros are bigger and have the same upper eye mount I say use those and LMK how it works .... When i started using Evaders on my pede it came about rather odd .... I have a brand new evader and i broke the chassis ( being a meathead ) and needed some shocks so i swapped em out and they worked really really well ..... So when ordering a new CHassis i ordered some evaders for my Pede ... The rest is history ...... Besides like i said being shiny :D they have adjustable spacers that you dont need to take off your shock to adjust ... .... Now that my breif deposition is over ... LOL .... Lets get back to helping Juntom get his stuff running like a raped ape :D

You should talk to Mike at www.rc-monster.com, he can help you set up your monster pede! They have the whole FLM line (the driveshafts are a must, they rock!) plus other nice hardened steel accesories to make your truck nearly undestructible. I know most tend to go for the Mamba motor option but I've had an incredible experience with my Novak 5.5 (upgraded to 3.5 sintered rotor), it's very, very reliable, great ESC, extremely fast, great brakes, etc. Just use Integy fans instead of the Novak fan on the ESC, cheaper and more durable.
I saw an ad on a recent rc car action mag from traxxas announcing alum knucles and bearing carriers for the e-pede but haven't seen them anywhere online. I think Tower has them as pending arrival. We'll see. One word of advice for anybody going alum/steel, use lots of threadlock on all screws, it's an absolutely necessary action to do if you're handling real power.
I'm gonna start building a full metal t-maxx soon!

:D I think I'll stick with the RPM stuff. The Aluminum gets pricey! It looks cool though. I think I read somewhere that RPM was coming out with Castors for the Pede.
Juntom, I would get the RPM Castors, Bearing Carriers, Front and Rear A-Arms, and maybe the Wide Bumper as well. Throw in some 5X11 bearings and you should be OK to start. I agree with Bigdaddyv on the shocks, aluminum idler, and maybe the CVD's as well. I'm going to be using a Hitec HS-645MG servo in mine. You can get all that stuff off of Tower or Ebay. Look up RCBOYZ on Ebay. They are cheap and great to deal with.
PS - The IB4200's should be sweet Jontom. I have some as well and I can't wait to see how they perform with the Mamba Max 4600.:D :driving:
BIGDADDYV
03-30-2007, 03:32 PM
MY 4200's are just WRONG ...... Bottom line ..... LOL . Thats like putting speedy gonzalez on speed ....... COmbinde that with a fearless throttle finger and your taking out a loan to get your pede back in running condition ...... TO be honest i get bored running 4200's in my stuff because the bash part of me falls away and the I MAY BREAK ALOT OF STUFF part kicks in because of the long run times ..... All i know is this ..... RPM means you buy it once and if you break it its paid for ... Thier A-Arms are great and I have never had a problem with them .... I just got done putting sets on both of my pedes and my xl5 rusty ..... Also you cant go wrong with traxxas aluminum .... Thye make some really tough stuff ..... Also dont be affriad to give traxxas a call, i did and they are sending me FREE drive shafts for my maxx .... They have a great customer support ......

Hi,
I've had my XL-5 Stampede awhile now, and I just ordered a Novak XBR Sport 8.5 brushless system. I was wondering what gearing do you guys use that have the 5800kV motor? I ordered a 17t pinion, and I have a 15t already. Would 15/86 be good for bashing (ie. in grass and off-road), and would 17/86 be ok to use for on-road only (ie. speed runs)? Does that gearing sound ok for the 5800kV motor? Thanks for any info.

As long as they work, they're ok. The plastic ones are pretty durable, and easily replaced. I've heard that the pins on the out-drive yokes slip out very easily on the MIP cvd's.

If you dont let the locktite dry before your try to lube them or run the truck before you let the locktite dry you can run into pin slippage problems ...... I have 8 different models with MIP CVD's on them and to be honest I have never had a problem with any of them ..... Nor has anyone I have met ...
As far as gearing goes check the motor after a frun or two to make sure that its not getting really hot ...... Really gearing all depends on what type of running you do ...... Hvae fun with it but use your head :D

Devan, I am gonna break it to you easy man ...... The more you thrash ( and its nots possible to own a pede and not thrash ) the more lids your going to go through ...... LOL .... To be honest I go through a lid a every 6 months on mine ..... With the warmer weather comming you will notice that your lid hets up a bit more and becomes more pliable ..... In the winter its a bit more brittle ..... You may want to look into thicker lids for your ride ...... The exact thickness I am not sure of but most of the pro painters should be able to help you out ..... If you want a great price on a custom Lid for your pede talk to Ben over at www.sicklidz.com ... Or PM him here his nic is sicklidz ... He hooks me up when ever i need some stuff done ...... There are others here on the boards to check with also ... We have tons of quality painters here ....... I modified my body mounts for a Proline Jato F-150 Body. I marked the mounting positions and it will work out fine. I like the lower stance of the body. I'm leaving the rear wing off because I don't want it to look like a race truck. I hope to have time to mask and paint the body later this week/weekend. I'm soooo nervous about painting for the first time (A Painting Virgin! ). I've read a bunch of stuff on this site about painting and I think I can tackle it. I just need to take my time. I'm going to stick to two or three colors. I'll be using some Parma flame masks.
