View Full Version : Finally hit 70 mph
I finally hit 70 mph with my hpi micro. If I add 2 more cells to the battery pack, I should get around 90 mph, but I need a bigger place to drive it, and a new radio with a really long range. It took about 400 to 500ft. to reach 70. :)

wow!!
I had to read your initial statement a few times....u got a HPI micro chassis to hit 70+ ??? crikey!!
with a micro receiver and a good FM radio you might go even faster..... how are the tyres and motor holding up at those speeds tho??
;)
The tires aren't too good, but the motor is doing great. I use an Epic binary 2 10 turn motor.
What radio do you recommend?
There is a guy with his micro that is going to the challenge that does about 80 mph, but his is geared alot higher and probably has more cells.

I am building a Mini-T, so far it has a Mamba 8,000 and 3s tp lithiums on order.
Yeah, good job.
I think Steve should create categories for this speed challenge, like:
- 1/18
- 1/10 electric
- 1/10 nitro
- 1/8 electric
- 1/8 nitro
- 1/5 electric
- 1/5 nitro
- Monster truck electric
- Monster truck nitro
- unlimited class
With specific rules restriction for each class ( like max dimensions, type bodies allowed, maybe even engine displacment for nitro or even type motor or batt )
This way more ppl would get more motived to come to this speed chalenge as they know they might come back home with a trophee.
I think this is highly important if you want to drain ppl to participate to this challenge.
Otherwise we will all be watching the big guys with big cars and big $$ playing with their big toys.
Because frankly speaking a 1/18 don't stand a chance against the bigger cars, no matter what you do to it...
On the other hand, I understand it is more work for Mr Bond, James bond... sorry Mr. Pond ... Steve Pond in order to organize this race.

Also, I would probably go if they had different classes like DaFF said. I could probably get my micro over 100 mph, with a 6 turn motor and 10 cells. :)

You forget some,
1/12,1/14,1/24,1/28, then you have to sort them by pancar, touring, stadium truck, carpet oval, dirt oval, pro stock, funny car, dragster, pro mod, lemans, GT, indy car, I am sure I have forgot some. Then we go by state, county, city, east coast, west coast, midwest, then demacrat, rebublican, independent. Oh don't forget male, female, under 10 years old,10 to 16, 16to 24, you get the idea.
Feel free to post any I missed.
Thanks, Randy

... But the problem with having all those would be costs for trophys and or Plaques for the people. Whatever the prize is, Mutliply it by the Number of catigorys and the price goes up... Means the Cost to enter goes up most likely.
And @ AJG - NICE! Show these people how Micros do it! Gota rep the micros...
How much is it to enter i wonder? Hope its not more than $70.

Uh............. I hope you realize my post was totally a smart a$$ remark!
Guys, what I was saying about having the stated different classes was just set as an example.
Look around, and you'll see that the projects that stand the most chance to win the challenge are very far for being anywhere close to what we are used to see in regular r/c car ( like rocket car, full blow V8, dragster ../.. ).
I still think that most entrant in this challenge are not that rich and would like at least to have a small chance to come back home with a price.
We need to sparkle the little ignition they need to make the trip to this race.
Having said that, if you are a little bit into r/c car, you can figure out pretty easy that the most car that could be modified to enter this challenge are 1/18, 1/10 and 1/8 scale and Monster truck.
All those cars can be available widely at any local hobby shop and are what most ppl already have and run.
So, I would think one could only dowsize the racing class to:
1/18 ( it will be electric because I don't know off any gas 1/18)
1/10 ( both electric and gas can be run together )
1/8 ( same remark, elec & gas together )
Monster Truck ( elec & gas also )
unlimited
To my opinion, those 5 classes could be enough and that would be a lot more fair challenge !
I would not think it would be extremely difficult to set rules for those classes.
It should not be too complicated to set the race to accomodate them either.
I don't think money would become a huge issue.
In fact, I am nearly sure a lot of the r/c car manufacturers would be willing to give a fair amount of money to see their brand like the " the most faster 1/10 car on the planet".
I would think Mr Pond knows enough ppl in this industry so that manufacturer would sponsor this event and give away prices, car kits or trophees :D
The audience wiould go to the roof also if this speed challenge would have been more oriented toward "the car of the street" and not only very custom exotic cars you have not seen or heard before.
It would be nice to see what Steve think of this idea :)

Ya Daff... you have a point. I like that idea... but whats your problem with 1/12th scale? Iv yet to see you post about catigorys or what not and say something with 1/12th scales.
With the 1/18th class... theres 4 gas Micro rs4's i know of, one m18 in the works and 3 Mini-ts. Im sure theres more of those seeing as hows theres a conversion kit out on Ebay and it was featured in RCdriver... or rcca... one of the two.
At Randy - No joke. But still... with even 5 or so large catigorys, it can get spendy...
Spark,
I am assuming 1/18, 1/10, 1/8 are the most popular scale.
I exlcuded the 1/12 because it doesn't seems to me there is a lot of ppl using 1/12 cars. The 1/12 car kit are sparse and it is mostly high end racer ( like Hara, god he has a nice 1/12 !) that run this type scale. Look at the major car manufacturer like Traxxas, Duratrax, HPI, Kyosho, Tamiya ( sorry if I omitted some ), none of them have 1/12... only Associated and yok does
BTW, I only own 1/10, 1/8 and Monster Truck, I've seen 1/18 and 1/5, but never saw 1/12 running. Although they are very good and nice cars.
Note as well that I did the same with 1/5 scale as again it is only used by a small amount of hardcore ppl ( even so in Europe 1/5 is very popular )

Oh. I see. Ya... hara's LM3 is nice. But i dont see why people want to spend all this money on whatever... i think a 1.12th would take the cake easy.

 Daff... are you serious???? You see monster trucks running at this event????
Why not :D
I mean MT is the latest craze in the r/c car business.
There is loads of ppl owning MT ( uncluding myself, R&B C5 Savage: can you say fast  ) and I would love to see one of them full bore with all four tires balloning like crazzy !
I am sure most MT manufacturer would be ready to sponsor this and to get prototype running.

If i was to run this... i think id enter a MT just for S&G. But i wouldnt use baloonable tires... thats just Suicide right there. Id use some road hawg custom extra low-pro tires.
But im sure there will be some MT's there. I mean, in theory, noobs think "MT's are bigger! That means you can stuff more BS into it like N'O and some Superchargers, Blow off, and turbo! ILL BE A RICE CIV!!!! YEY!" and they dont think to drill out for weight, remove some moving parts. Reconfig the tranny for oneway only to save weight, ect. If i was to do it id want to test out the prototype 4 speed...

Don't worry about ballooning tires. There is a trick real monster truck racers know about where you turn the tire insideout and wrap packaging tape around it then turn it around and it shouldn't balloon as bad.No I'm not a MT racer I saw it a magazine once.So don't ask me how you turn it inside out again or anything else.
I think I would like to see the minis run.Never seen one that goes that fast until I build my speedy-T(insert cool smiley[ too lazy to go to advanced thing]) but who knows when that will be????Not me thats for sure.
Ah well

I ordered a Micro RS4 myself this past Sunday. It should be here HOPEFULLY next week. I want to see how fast I can make it go. I ordered the mamba 8000 brushless motor for it.
I may be getting a new radio, if I sell one of my other cars: http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45506 (if you want to see it) Then I would be able to go farther, and get more speed.

I bought a JR R-1 radio (will be shipping monday), so hopefully I can do longer runs and get a higher speed.

Hello All,
How are you determining this speed?
I also have a micr RS4 with a maba 6800 and a 3 cell li-po
and I cant get it to hold together that long to get to this kind of speed
Lets see 4 rubber tires absolutly blew apart at half thottle
4 foam tires 45's falling appart real quick.
1 mamba motor and a fire!!! bearing in motor gave out I think
Castle is looking at it now.
So any way it would be nice to see how you are getting these numbers.
Also what is everyone doing in regards to the heat off these motors
Thanks
Glen

Personally, I think it would be coolest to see something new in this challenge. Most of us have probably seen nitro or elec. 1/10s do 100+ MPH, so all we'd see is just a different design and car layout, and for electric, typical extremely low-turn motor with tons of cells.
I would much rather see a micro reach a high speed because it would be something new... something radical, a not-your-everyday sort of thing. Anyways, its much more of a "challenge" to get a 1/18 to do speeds like that.
I'm sure we will see a lot of innovation and cool ideas from everybody, and I'm excited to see how this turns out.
Well, thats just my opinion...

well, first, you could try this http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=124363&goto=lastpost thread. as for getting it to go faster, you could start with a nice tuned pipe, and lighten it a bit.
