if you guys were to consider buying a used Savage would you buy it Stock for a decent price or a hopped up one for like an extra hundred? For me it's like starting out with a clean slate to make it my own even if it's second hand...what about you guys?

I definetly get what you are saying about wanting to start with a clean slate, making it yours instead of someone elses', But by buying a used savage in good condition will save you lots of money. In that "extra hundred", you spoke of you will end up getting parts that are worth waayy more than a hundred dollars.
I personally like building my own things but if you are on a budget and want something proven then my advice is to buy a used one. Even if you were going to buy a new savage you would need to spend maybe more than a hundred dollars getting it run right (there is a thread on here somewhere that tells you what you need to buy).
Those are the pros and cons, so whatever you want to do. :)

My suggestion would be to buy it stock and modify to suit YOU!

yeah..i'm leaning towards the buying stock thing...the only issues i really know about are the 4 spider gear mod and the half tank lean issue.but i plan on getting a savage 25 so it shouldn't be a problem since the fuel pick up is in the rear right?any other suggestions besides the ones i've mentioned?...p.s. i'm kinda in a tug-o-war right now on whether to get a savage 21 with the duel tank mod with a lot of accessories or a stock savage 25..both are gonna be about 300 shipping included...should i just wait and see if i can find a hopped up savage 25 on ebay or go ahead and buy either of the two i just mentioned?

I'd buy used with hop-ups. The engine is more risky that way, but you can get a LOT more for your money! I recently paid $400 for a used Savage that would be worth over $1000 if all the parts were new. The parts weren't new, and I didn't really need them all, but what I got out of the truck was worth FAR more than what I paid.

HaiSpeedRaCer, what engine does the .21 that you're looking at have in it? You mentioned hop-ups, so hopefully the engine has been changed out. The problem with buying used is that unless you know the person really well, you never know whether they're telling you the truth as to how much the engine has been run, etc. What hop-ups does it list as having?

actually the .21 savage i'm looking at is mostly stock besides the dual tank mod..it just comes with a crap load of accessories....it's seems like a pretty good deal for around 300shipped....i actually had a chance to buy a first gen maxx(everytime i thought about sending the money a giant image of a Savage popped up in my head and i would stop myself from buying it...it's almost as if the SAVAGE is calling to me..hehe) for like 170 but i'm gonna stick to my guns and look for a savage which seems to hold it's value pretty well..i've been looking on ebay for the past week and there's nothing below 300(which is my budget limit) on there..maybe a tad higher..like 320 but then there's like a 30 dollar shipping rate..hehe...i've heard of some people getting pretty good deals..so i'll just be patient and keep on searching...

man the whole fun of the thing is to buy it, build it, upgrade it. I still have my nitro rs4 2, and man was that thing slow and ugly at first, and over the last 6 years, i've put over $1100 into it, including a trx 2.5 engine. My car is race ready and doesnt have all that bulk junk aluminum on it. same goes for my savage, I'm still working on upgrading it.
if you do buy bone stock savage, get the ss, then buy an aluminum center skid plate, aluminum tank guard, better servo saver(i'm using a kimbrough heavy duty saver for metal gear servos), and an aluminum brake kit. i'm using the envy dual disk set, the pads are already attached to the calipers and you never have to worry about gluing them or having them come off, since they're molded to it. have fun

Do you have a part number for the Kimbrough HD saver, viperracing?

Financially, buying a used and hopped up Savage makes a lot more sense I think. However, I've acquired many vehicles in trades and whatnot...and it's just not the same. Being the first owner just has that intangible feeling of the truck being yours. I really don't know how to describe it...Not that there's anything wrong w/ used. I've gotten the majority of my vehicles used, but I can't say they mean as much to me as they ones I've bought new. Then there's that feeling of bringing it home from the hobby shop for the first time (I say first time because you will eventually break it or encounter other difficulties and take it back to get their help)...Waiting on the UPS or FedEx truck to come is fun...but not as fun. I'd also suggest getting a Savage SS if you go used. That's an even better feeling :). Bringing home a new truck, building it, then getting to drive it for the first time is the best possible way to get into r/c.

here's a link to it: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXS361&P=ML
it says the part number is 124
if you go to use it, use the innermost middle hole for maximum power/less stress to the wheels.

before with the stock saver, I couldnt flip the truck over since lots of the power from the servo was lost, but then I added the HD saver and I get the most control/response than ever.

also depending on your servo manufacturer it comes with 3 different pieces to match your servo.
