I thought I'd start a new thread for the electric MT since the old one got moved to nitro and nobody knows it's there...
Here are some pics of my newest body and aluminum parts to strengthen it for the SS5800. Replce the ***** in the URL with rc pics to see my picture gallery. Let me know what you think. The pics just don't do the Candy Purple any justice. The graphics are done using Proline and Jackal inner body decals.
The gallery. replace the **** with rc pics in the url. (http://www.******.net/media.php?searchstr=user:4755&trick=Any&type=Any&time=1090776117&search=search&limit=10)

There is no class to race them in. So you would end up having a bash truck only.

I understand that part... There was no class for the Mini T either, but it is so popular that a class was created. See what I'm saying?
TrickSpeed

Well, actually, at least around my area race classes for the mini t were popping up even before it was released.
Besides, the mini t is riding the whole "mini" craze thats going on right now. Just like the T-maxx started the whole 2 speed/reverseing giant size nitro craze. The MT didn't have that benefit of either starting or riding a wave to popularity. It just wasn't that different. Plus I think the whole breaking chassis issue scared some people away.

I was at the LHS the other day and noticed Pro-line make spinners. Of course they are only designed for their TC and 1/8 scale rims, so here's my question, has anyone tried mounting 26mm rims on their EMT? I'm sure it could be done, but not sure what it would look like.

Anyone still around here? I have an RS4 MT. I got it when they first came out. Mine is used for crawling now adays. I still cant believe this thing is still runing. Sence day one all I have had to replace was 1 rear belt so far and 1 suspention arm. I have had problems with the pin that holds the pullys behind the spur snaping like a twig but I guess its do to the crawling I do. There is quite a bit of torq going through that shaft. I trashed the stock street tires mine came with about a week after I got it and got some proline dirt hangs for it, Agan I still use these tires after all these years.
Would be nice if this class would have picked up. Maybe with 4wd buggy racing picking up, this will too.
The MRC / Academy SB Buggy can be made into a 4wd truck. You just need the parts from the gas powered truck they make.

It would have for sure...but the truck has been discontinued...so it will never have the chance...at least not in it's current form. If they release an RS4 MT 2 I'll definately buy it...although I would like to see shaft drive.
definitely shaft drive. Thats where its at.

i got one of these. it was my first rc car, i got it like 5 years ago. now it just sits in my garage collecting dust. the bushings are all wore out. ive broke one suspension arm but got a new pair, so now i have one extra. it needs new shocks. i dont know, maybe i should sell it, anybody be interested? it just needs new shocks and bearings and it should be ready to go with your electronics, i have some esc's and old motors laying around too, i would like to sell it with the esc and motors in one low price :) i think ill add this to the for sale forum when i get the time. the body just has 4 extra holes because i put it on my tc3 lol, it looked pretty cool. its the dodge ram body painted white with silver two tone on the bottom like real trucks.
but it would just get lost in the fs forum, so i guess ill just post it in here
electric mt w/ wheels tires and body rolling chassis

i have some TC bodies laying around, a few speed gems motors, tekin rebel esc and lrp pro-sport esc, and some batteries that im not sure if they are still good, but maybe a few cells or whatever are, they are nicd's that i left a charge in them :( you can email me at elvis4013@adelphia.net or just post in this thread or PM me on here(does this have PM's? lol)

Any idea how I could make my MT a little better is the climbing department? Seems to lose a lot of power while trying to climb rocks and what not. Even worse when I take out the inserts on my climbing tires for better grip then it will barly if not climb at all. I already changed the gearing for more torq but it didnt seem to help much. Would it help if I went from a 22T pinion to a 17T pinion?

Have you locked all the diffs?
jasonw
02-14-2005, 09:06 PM
I started out locking the rear diff and was not to impressed, Later I locked the front diff as well but was realy realy not impressed. I unlocked the front but left the rear locked up.
The problem is not necisarily lack of tracktion its a huge lack of power. Its like puting a weed wacker motor in a cement truck and trying to climb a hill with it. The motor is an old black phantom 2 but is still verry much up to par and runing great. I am wandering how much further I could go with the gearing.
Maybe the motor just doesn't have the torque you need?
If you got it, try a higher torque motor and see how it performs.
If you want to run a stock motor, the P2k or Orion Core have a lot of torque.
The Orion Chrome stock is ALL torque. If you can find it, also is a good cheap choice.

bigair... bearings (forgot to list that on ebay) and titanium rods... out of both my EMTs I've never had diff trouble. I did open them up and relube the gears just in case. Not alot has been done to that one because my other EMT got all the upgrades and between that a Mini-T and 2 Revos, I had my hands full. they should still have hop ups available from GPM.
On ebay... RCBoyz used to carry stuff but I'm not sure now.
I'm gonna say no on most of the Nitro to Electric parts. I remember downloading both manuals and comparing the part numbers and overall look, they were different.
Hope that helps.

here the motor specs en esc specs
Feigao brushless motor 540 8s
These motors are nearly identical to Hacker brushless motors, but cost significantly less! The motor in this auction mounts anywhere a 540 size motor would, and is similar in size to a standard 540 or 550. This is an excellent motor for 1/10 scale car or truck (or boat/plane), offering high power and efficiency(with the appropriate speed controller). These motors have a standard 1/8" shaft. Motor specs: RPM/Volt(kv value): 4436 Amps: 81 Resistance: 0.0060 ohms Shaft size: 3.175 mm (1/8")
Warrior 9918 Brushless Car Controller
9918/3BEC WarriorCar 99 Amp., 4 to 18 Cells, 3Amp.BEC on/off Function, 40 gram, 70x30x12mm, Forward-Backward-Brake, with RC-Car Software, radiatior, 4 Capacitors - The max. Cells is calculated with 1,2V per Cell. The Controllers are useable with LiPo Cells.

new tires will make a big difference. The tires you're running are decent for road but very little traction on offroad settings. brushless will make that car unbelievably fast. I drag and win against my nitro trucks on certain days. you'll have enough torque as well to run any size tire and keep alot of punch

Herman87... this is the best place I've found for those bearings: Duratrax Bearings for HPI MT (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD055&P=7)
Also, check out this link for the EMT... click on MANUAL and it should give you the info that you need:
HPI MT Resource (http://www.hpiracing.com/kits/mt/mt-m.htm)
CUSTOMIZER... I have yet to blow a diff and I usually change my belts when I see it frayed on the edges. The wear isn't bad at all. Usually after a few months they get changed. How is your belt tension? The book doesn't really tell how tight but I usually set it so that the belt has some give (especially the front). If you press down the belt and it's rock hard (no give) then I would loosen it a bit. Not too much. The one thing I've noticed that gets worn/broken is the metal pins that hold the front and rear belt gears. They break and it will quickly turn your car into a front or rear wheel only car. I think that's from the high speeds and then braking to a complete stop too quickly. Just a guess.

Teflon shielded bearings suck. For the price it's hard to beat the DTX setup, but I would suggest Dynamite's bearings. They're rubber sealed, so if you drive your truck in the snow, mud, dirt, sand, or whatever else like I do, you won't get stuff in them.

Herman, I suggest running a reciever pack or an External BEC if you do get the 9918 and even then, they'll be cogging still. With only 6 cells the controller's BEC can't get enough juice from the battery when the car's accelerating hard and your car will stutter and cog. I recommend getting a Hacker or a MGM Com Pro ESC isntead if you plan to run on low cell counts. The 9918's are fine if you have 12 or more cells. I got an older hacker master car controller to use with my MT and a C40 8S which should be plenty of power, maybe too much. I prefer the MT with the Novak though, the C40/master car will probably go into my Pro3.
If you want a big power MT you better do what me, starluck and a few others did and that is to convert a NMT to run 12 cell brushless. It's not hard but it takes some time. I started mine about September/October last year and I'm still not finished with it but I did take a long break from RC since then. It's pretty easy to get it running but it's not exactly what I call reliable. Also I made the thing run 48 pitch gears instead of mod1. It makes gearing choice easier but may not stand up to 12 cell abuse, but with that much power the current available mod 1 pinions for motors should be fine. If you do go ahead with an NMT-brushless conversion and want some help, feel free to ask.
BTW if anyone wants to know, I bought cbrfreak's MT.

My front belts tension is like what you described as good tension, but the rear belt has no way of adjusting the tension. I got it off ebay and the guy had installed the hpi graphite belt tensioner, so mabey the stock one had a rear tensioner? I seem to be going through front belts every month, and a rear belt every time I run through four packs or so, depending on how hard I run it ;)

If your looking for where to adjust the rear belt's tension, take the rear diff out of the rear bulkhead and remove the washers in the bulkhead, you'll see right away when you separate the bulkhead from the diff that there are notches in it, take out the washer and place it into a different notch to tighten or loosen the rear belt, remember to do this to both bulkheads.

I melted a Speed Gems 2 17t when i ran 3 packs through it without waitng for it to cool down between runs. Now I run a Speed Gems Pro 14t and haven't had any probs. The problem could also be the gearing. The stock gearing is recomended for a 13t motor.

If you're melting motors then your gearing is already too tall. You don't want to gear it up to get "more" speed. You'll just have "less" motor left at the end of the run when it melts. I'd suggest dropping a few teeth on the pinion and trying that. It might even be faster since the motor will be able to rev all the way up instead of running out of power on the top end due to being overgeared.
As for gearing, I wanna say I run 14/96 gearing with my Orion Revolution 10x2. It's not real fast honestly, but it is stupid quick. I can roast all four tires anywhere, even on the pavement. In theory it could probably stand to be geared up a little, but I don't wanna burn up a 60 dollar hand wound.
As for that 2-speed, I tried it with my Revolution 10x2 and it seemed to be geared a little tall. It might be perfect for something like a 12 or 13 turn though. I want to try it again some time. I've got a Super RS4 that I won off of Ebay that should be here today and I plan on trying the 2-speed in that with my Revolution. That should be insane...hopefully.

how do all you guys like this truck overall? Im thinking about getting one but dont really like the fact thats its belt driven and discontinued. If I got one I would probably put a Novak SuperSport motor set up in it and run it on 6 cells. What upgrades do you guys think would be needed(if still availbile) so I wouldnt have to do maintnance all the time.

Mine had a SS5800 in it and the previous owner did a few mods to it to withstand the power. It has aluminum pulleys, alu rear bulkhead, alu rear arms and a custom rear brace. The slipper will have to tightened a bit and a heatsink motor plate would help.

krisI.925... I have the Novak SuperSport motor in mine with every single upgrade available except for 2speed. If you look around you should be able to find most stuff.. try Hobby Etc, towerhobbies and Ebay. The one thing I'd like to upgrade is the metal pins in the rear drive shaft. When those snap they turn you into a 2wheel drive truck real quick. Wish they had titanium pins.

Me? Brushless would be cool...but it'd have to be something fairly weak. The MT's drivetrain isn't up to a lot of torque. I might try a Lehner 5300 in it some day...or maybe one of those Novaks, or the LRP...but I dunno.I'll leave the torque related stuff to my E-Maxx and E-Zilla.

I would run my Novak in it (it goes real well with it) but I want to keep the sensored system in the Pro3 and run the hacker in the MT. It's not like the C40 8S has that much torque anyway. :D

I'm glad to see there are others who still play with the MT. I have a duratrax streak ESC, Epic Shock 12x1 flatwire and 8 CBP3300 cells in mine. I had it geared 96/18 and it was approx 41mph (using distance method). Could've got more speed with a better ESC and batteries, but it was plenty fast for me. I ran 8 cells maybe 5 times in it. The rear belt didn't seem to have an noticeable extra play, but the front belt does. I sold the 8-cell pack and went back to 6 matched cells. Now it's around 30mph with 96/20 gearing.

I believe the RC10GT has slots in the wheels, like the T4, that attaches to the axle pin directly. They don't use hubs on the wheels like the MT. It will depend on how the adapter is made.

Yeah, I like the stadium truck format, but the wheels for them suck. 1/8th scale buggy tires are about the same diameter, but are WAY lighter just because there is less tire. They are also narrower. I don't feel that stadium tucks need the width that they have. I remember when the format first started about 10 years ago, Assosiated and possibly Losi both sold their cars with narrower front wheels, but for the sake of racing standards, they had to drop them.
I mean, think about it, 1/8th scale buggies are heavier, bigger, put more power to the wheels, yet their wheels are much more narrow.
True, most stadium trucks are 2WD, but ours aren't ;-)

Welcome to our little thread!
As for the MT2 front bumper thing...I've never tried, but I don't think it would bolt right up. You could probably make it fit if you were so inclined, but I'm 99.9% sure it wouldn't just bolt right up. I can't imagine it being that hard to adapt though.

Pics are going to have to wait. I drove the truck to try it out and noticed it was driving strange. I opened the rear end and found a shattered rear diff case and the one bevel gear inside had only 3 of the 13 teeth left on it. So off to the hobby shop I go. I'm also going to replace the spur gear on it becase it must have taken a beating from the rear end being trashed. Ohwell It's still a good truck once I get the bugs worked out and so new parts installed. We got 2-3 inches of snow tonight so I'm not sure I will be able to test it out right away. I just ran the inner body. It's pretty hard to fry an Rx with water, so I'm not too concerned about it, but I do run one of LRP's new waterproof A.I. ESC's. I put 3 packs through the truck last night in the snow and didn't have a single problem. Today should be even more fun because now it will actually be perma-4WD like it's supposed to be instead of 4WD when there's not much of a load on the thing like it was last night due to the hammered rear belt.

One with the ford 150 body, one bug, and one dodge. Their age seems to be in the same order based on his retail price. Does anyone know if these kits are otherwise identical, and are all the parts for the RS4 MT still available?

The Bug kit comes with Dirt Hawg tires and the others come with lower profile street tires. other than that they are the same. Better hobby shops should still carry parts for them but the aluminum goodies are harder to find. If you do get one make sure you get a bearing set too.

I ran mine with a cobalt 10x1 flatwire with 18/96. The motor was warm, but far from hot. My 8T Pro ESC was barely warm, but the batteries were really hot, which partially explains the crappy runtime. So I took it out and put a trinity midnight stock motor in until I can get a cobalt 12x1 flatwire.

Come on HPI. Bring this model back with a few tweaks. And get to work on the next generation with a shaft drive. The market is Ripe to take on 4wd electric stadium trucks. The development of batteries, the success of 1/8 nitro truggies, and the resurgence of the 4wd elec 1/10 buggies, all point to the success of the future big electric class of 4wd 1/10 elec stadium trucks.... or "electric 1/10 truggies", as I know the market will love that term.

For 12 cells, you want the 12S. The 8S is good up to about 10V. After that, it will heat up quickly. It will be doing a number on the voltage as well pulling 70A+. The 12S can push an E-Maxx to 35-38mph on 12 cells, so it will really make the lighter MT fly.

peter parker
04-18-2006, 03:47 AM
Yes, it's a Lehner 4200 and a Schultze 18.61 controller running on 96/16 gears.
I have some slight cogging issues, even on 8 cells, but if u keep it on the boil, it's like a rocket. Sorry, it was not a very neat picture as I was just stripping it to clean it, so it looks a little bit of a mess.
I do have another problem and that is the continuos ripping of the rear belt due to stones. I'm gonna have to make a custom rear belt guard before I take her out again, because I don't really feel like changing the belts after every 2nd or 3rd run.
The MT2 nitro running gear works like a charm.. The diff still looks like new inside, even after some serious abuse. The drive shafts are holding out well as well as the cups. I changed the lot, A-arms, drive shafts, in fact everything except the chassis and diff cups....but everything else is from the MT2.
Maybe I have the wrong motor in there, because of the cogging issues, but it's the only high rpm brushless I have.
Also works a charm i my X-Ray by the way.

I just bought a EMT after many years of being without one. My original one had a heap of mods done to it, but can't remember what I used interms of parts from different cars. So I have a few Qs.
Firstly, do T3 or T4 turnbuckles fit the EMT? If they are too long that's not a problem so long as they are only marginally longer.
What can I replace the bevel diffs with? Pro 2 diffs? I have a feeling the MT diffs have more teeth (larger) Or am I thinking of another car?
I had a carbon stiffner on my old MT and wanted one for this one. Can't seem to find any though... Can you get pre layed carbon sheets that can be cut out into the shapes I want?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Also anything else you can think of to beef up the old girl would be great!!!
Cheers

You are correct in assuming that the MT runs a larger pulley than the Pro 2. HPI did make ball and one-way diffs for th MT, but I don't know if they still do.
As for the carbon stiffener, I'd assume it's discontinued, like most all of the aftermarkt parts for the truck. I'm sure you can find carbon fiber sheets, though I'd assume they're rather pricey, and you need to make sure you cut them with the right sort of tools so that you don't splinter the edges and whatnot.

All - I have just purchased my first RS4 MT (ebay) and I love it, but I know it has more to give. I'm looking at the motor and grears to get more speed. I would appreciate any recomendations on set up and on what to get. Thanks.

...I'm looking at the motor and grears to get more speed...
The GTB 6.5 will get you 40mph (don't know the gearing he had). 8 zapped 1.17 cells with a 12T brushed motor will also get you 40mph geared 96/18. I think someone else used 12 cells in a converted MT from Nitro and he was getting 47mph with a brushless motor, but he could gear it up to get over 55mph. It all depends on how deep those pockets of yours are!

The internal diff parts of the Nitro MT will fit straight in, they are beefy-er. Also used the dogbones, outdrives, in fact everything barring the chassis and diff covers from the MT 2 fit straight on. I would stay away from metal rod ball joints and just put the plastic ones from the MT2 on (like I did) very flexible, and already adjusted, so no fiddling and no breaking...

electro21 - Thanks for the tip. I've got my eye on the GTB 6.5 and at then end of the month I'm going to pick one up. Then it will be time to work on the gearing.
ALL - Ok I've cracked my front mount set again and I am looking to strengthen it up. I have located a graphite front end but I would like to go aluminum (I don't care about color). I have searched but I cannot locate an aluminum front end anywhere. I have tried Hobby Etc. (GPM) and Sheldons Hobby (good places to locate hard to parts) but neither lists an aluminum front end. Does this part even exist?

if you're talking about the pinion being to close to the end of the motor shaft, here's my mod... take the BACK plate from the slipper, grab a file and cut the groove where the input shaft pin goes almost all the way down to the base of the plate. now cut about half that stub off (and the plastic pin retainer) and that will move the spur gear closer to the motor plate, and you'll be able to move the pinion further on the motor shaft. worked for me!!

Greetings! I'm stoked to have found this particular thread! I've had my EMT since '98, made a few mods, bought a few mods, and generally beat on the beast. A couple of years ago I had it at Redondo Beach, and swore up and down that I could clear this little rock formation over a puddle. Alas, no; she dropped right in the salty drink  . Being the genius that I am, I let it sit for the past couple of years. Of course, the motor was good and seized, all the balljoints that weren't aluminum or titanium were orange/red fuzzballs, the bearings had all seized, and all the linkages that weren't aluminum were unrecognizeable, too.
So, I started rebuilding yesterday.
Here's one impressive thing; the MIP CVD's. I took them apart, with a little penetrating oil, put 'em back together, and they feel pretty good! The other neat thing was finding out that the NMT and Nitro Rush suspension was all the same, just with different P/Ns.
Now I have to find a nice new motor, get some new batteries (2100's aren't what they used to be), and get back into the dirt! :D

I've heard of some people making lexan shields, but I don't know how they did it.
If I get a chance, I'll take a picture of how I made my little shield. The lexan needs to be filed down a bit, then sandwiched between the bottom of the shock tower and the gearbox halves. I've only needed to replace one belt, and it wasn't broken, just worn.

Hi again guys.
I have a couple more questions for you all.
I want to get some titanium turnbuckles. I have the opportunity to buy some factory titanium units that suit a Nitro Rush.
Will these be suitable?
Are they longer or shorter than the MT ones? I can always cut them down and tap extra thread.
Also I just purchased a Carbon fibre belt tensioner center shaft support for it. Now I bought the car second hand so I don't have the left over palstic parts for it. Would I be correct in assuming that the plastic bearing holder that inserts into the carbon brace is originally included in the kit?
Is this part on tree number A470 and part number "2"?
One last thing...
The front steering knuckles... What else do these come out on. Are they the same as the Pro 2? What about the super nitro?
I'm trying so hard to track down alloy C hubs and knuckles...
Staying on the topic of steering, what do you guys do about the linkage setup. Is there alloy arms that can replace the plastic ones. I will be replacing the bent metal rod with a ball jointed tie rod as an interim fix. But I was thinking about an alloy arm with bearings joining the two swing arms. I've got it laid out in my head. Just need to find the time to make it...
Many thanks for any help you can provide!
I gotta get this thing running like my old one... I've just forgotten everything... :(

Heya,
I want to get some titanium turnbuckles. I have the opportunity to buy some factory titanium units that suit a Nitro Rush.
Nitro Rush and MT2 share suspension parts, they just changed the #'s. Take a look @ the website, and compare the two parts in the instructions. You could always buy the Lunsford part for the NMT or Rush, too. I don't see the joy in getting "factory" parts necessarily, unless you're getting a smokin' deal on 'em.

Save the machining time, the linkage w/ tie rod ends works as a pretty good permanent solution. It might be lighter, and gives you some adjustability...

Gluing the servo saver sounds alright added to the turnbuckle mod might just give me some presision! :D I run a metal geared servo (Futaba S9402, an oldy but a goody)
The MT2 steering parts are different to the EMT parts aren't they?
I cna get MT2 alloy parts from a particular trader. Will the MT2 arms fit the EMT front diff housing? I migth just do the conversion to MT2. But I have Shiny CVDs in the front, will I still be able to use them?
Again, thanks!
Anyone know about the bearing support for the carbon belt tensioner/gearbox plate?

What do you need to know about the bearing support? I can check mine if you have a questions. Well with some info from starluck and if the weather holds out here I will be racing my MT2 convert against nitro 3.3 rustys.
Im going to be running a 8L motor with m compro mgm 8012 esc. I'm not sure on the gearing yet. Im going to try a few different pinions to see what works for me. I'm also running on proline road rage tires. I'll try to post some pics of the truck. I've posted pics before but I cleaned up the set up a little. Now I just need to paint up a body. I'm leaning towards a PT loser body. Im thinking pink paint with blacked out windows. I'm also going to try to make a wing for the PT. What would burn nitros more than losing to a electric truck. Answer.... loosing to a pink PT Cruiser thats electric. I just hope everything holds up. Both diffs have been cleaned and checked. The shocks have been rebuilt. If theres anything I have forgotten please let me know. I will race on sunday.

It's all good, I was after the plastic bearing retainer that sits in the carbon support. I found it on the plastic parts tree A470. (if I remember the number correctly). It's the rear bulkhead tree.
I got my Lunsford turnbuckles and they are heaps better than the steel tie rods... :D
Now I just have to hunt down some alloy C hubs and turn knuckles and a graphite chassis stiffner....
I've got a template to make an alloy one, but finding the time is sooo hard!
I also painted a new body which I thought came up alright, just need some new wheels to smarten her up a bit! At the moment I have some VERY old Monster Beetle tyres as I was driving it in some extremly rough terrain, so they gave me the extra ground clearance. But boy did they add some rotating mass!!!!!!
If anyone has some alloy C hubs or anything alloy or carbon/graphite and are wanting to get rid of it (for a price) let me know!!! Has to fit EMT!
Many thanks!

The truck looks good. Im also glad to here you found your part. Well I don't thin kthe racing is going to be happening this weekend. There is nothing but rain in the forcast. That could be good for me. I tried out my truck last night with nothing but bad luck. I shreaded my spur gear in have a battery pack. I think I need to make a stronger motor mount. I have a feeling its flexing from the power that the 8L is putting out on 10 cells. The 8L is also heating up quite a bit. It's not getting real hot but after half a battery pack it was too hot for my tastes. I'm thinking of also installing a fan on the motor to keep it running cooler.

I just bought a chassis stiffiner on ebay. It's called an RS4-Pro2.
That's right, I have a hybrid ride, half MT, half pro2. Stiff as it gets.
The only draw back is the front needs much modification to work, and it has REALLY low camber.
The chassis is a little shorter and much lighter and the gear ratios are different. Smooth ride, though.

Sadly, my camera recent failed a gravity test, so no.
There is a picture in this forum of a similar ride though.
The MT is based on the Pro2/Sport2 line. Buying a Pro2 and applying it to the MT is like buying $200's worth of upgrades for your car.
Ball Bearings
Ball Diffs
Better stearing system
Much lighter
Much more rigid
Tons of spare parts.
The chassis, however, is less basher friendly. Making the stock chassis stiffener is less basher friendly, too. Flexibility is key for bashing. Bending, not breaking.
Interesting...

It's a bit of a bugger really, as the MT is such a great car! It's a real shame they discontinued it.... I suppose trends relly rule the roost. :(
I might look into the Pro 2 conversion. I raced one for a fair while and they are a great car! So you just use the Pro2 bulkheads and attatched the MT arms and turnbuckles to it. Might get a Pro 2 and try it out... If it gets too complicated requiring too many mods, I'll ust keep it for a road warrior! hahah

I reckon the drivetrain is solid as!
I used to race mine running a Fantom 13 quad or triple. Can't remember. Pretty sure it was a quad. Was a special hand picked item direct from one of the top drivers at the time. Then I also had a Kindwald special motor I think that was a 12 single... I used to mainly run that in my T3, then I wanted to try and beat my track PB. So I wacked it in. Never took it out again.. heheeh That was back when 2000 nicads were the bomb! I got out of the sport because I couldn't afford the jump up to 2400s when they got introduced.
It was insane!!! I never stripped or snapped a belt. Front or rear... Mind you I had the slipper setup so it would do it's job. Probably helped save it. I know of guys running fixed spur adapters and ripped dozens of belts to shreds...
I suppose now days everyone is running 9, 8 and 7 turn motors. So these would impose a huge amount of stress on it.
I've hunted down a number of front belts if anyone is interested. They aren't cheap... But none the less available.
Metalry101, mate that'd be awesome!!!
Thanks heaps for having a look!

I've got one of the carbon chassis stiffners on mine and even thought its been close to a year since I had my emt off the shelf I can't bring myself to part with it .. I did see an alternative chasis stiffener once ..

drill holes in the front chasis brace and mid chasis brace for the ball ends and attach the turnbuckles between them so they look sorta like this ..

Hi Guys
I have a problem with my MT! It runs far too hot! So far I've cooked 2 (older) speed contollers (8Turn limits) when using an Orion 13X3 motor geared at 96/22 with Dirt Hawg tyres! I fitted a new Msonic 3 ESC (8T) and changed to a 15T motor - ESC went into thermal shutdown after a few minutes!
Today I tried a Novak GT7 ESC and a 10X2 Trinity CopperHead motor with an IB3800 battery and 20/96 ratio - went like hell - until it stripped the spur (30 seconds!!) - didn't have another 96T so fitted an 87T - pinion didn't reach - best I could fit was a 23T pinion! Performance was insane!
That is until it stopped! Reason - the wires to the motor had become so hot that they had unsoldered!
Any advice? I seems that every time I run a 'hot' motor in the truck I either cook the ESC, go into thermal shutdown or generate so much heat that the motor nearly melts!
New ball bearings throughout - no drag etc. Having to drive this truck with a 27T stock motor is no fun - but at least it keeps going!
Cheers

i had a similar problem. The MT works BEST with SINGLE wind motors. Doubles will do ok as far as controlling heat, but usually you would gear a double wind lower than a single. Triples are a definate no no. Since the MT is 4wd it doesn't need triples and doubles b/c it is going to get traction much easier than a 2wd truck. My recommendation is to ALWAYS use singles and gear 96/18. I did this with the Intellispead 8T Pro ESC (8T limit) and a Cobalt 1 10x1 motor and it flew and it NEVER got hot. It BARELY got warm. I want runtime over speed now, so i'm switching to the Traxxas 12T 550.

Hi Guys
After reading a post from a month or two ago about "upgrading" the MT using RS4 Pro2 parts, I thought ... I've an old RS4 Pro Sport lying about doing nothing so why not try it out! (While I was at it I stole my RS4 Mini's heat sink motor mount - it doesn't get hot so doesn't need it!). Stripped the MT and began assembley from the rear - in went the ball diffs then I took them out - perhaps later - put in the 32T Pro diffs - everything went smoothly. Then the front - again everything fitted and I was just thinking how good HPI were to have all their RS4 stuff compatible when ... the MT upper gearbox / shock mount didn't fit - the holes don't match!
The Pro series have 2 piece upper gearbox / shock mounts whereas the MT is all in one! I fitted the Pro gearbox half and screwed it all together. The shock towers were a problem! Digging in my 'unfinished projects' box uncovered a Losi XXX-4 front shock tower which fitted over the HPI gearbox and with a little bit of persuasion screwed on! All that is left is to figure out which of the 5 possible holes to fit the inboard top balljoint to!
Possible advantages
Flat chassis - better air circulation than with bathtub!
Stiffer with upper chassis brace
Parts availability??
Big front bumper :)
Performance - will have to see!
Cheers

Hi Guys
The MT PRO build
Finished the build today – estimated the position for the inboard front ball joint – front all went together nicely! On installing the motor one immediate advantage I noticed was that using the alloy motor mount heat sink + the lhs alloy mount was that I was able to fit a 20T pinion to the 87T spur (stripped my 96T spur) whereas before I could only fit a 23T pinion – BTW does anyone else think that Losi pinion grub screws are the pits! Even with the supplied allen wrench they ‘round off’ easily! These gears are only for testing as I need to find a new 96T spur and an 18 or less pinion as the internal gear ratio of the Pro is 2.13 compared to the 2.6 of the MT!
All ready to fit my new – as yet unpainted bodyshell – a Tamiya VW Touareg! Just have to make new holes in the body for the bumper mounted posts of the Pro and find the foam bumper for it!
To change the subject! Are we being ripped off with the R/C stuff we buy :( ?
Bought myself a ‘gas’ truck today! Well not exactly a truck! I’ve always liked the HPI Savage ‘Kawasaki’ quad better than the real Savage but even at the Tower Hobbies price of $469 (better than the normal South African price of $640!) it seemed a bit much. So when one of my grandkids stuck an advert from a local store under my nose this afternoon for a nice ‘Kawasaki’ green quad – for $385 I checked the ad and discovered the offer was $128 off the normal selling price and only on for today - 1 hour left! Made it just in time!
It’s not made by HPI and it didn’t come with a driver figure or any radio control electronics or transmitter and it wasn’t 1/8th scale either!
So what’s the big deal you might be asking yourselves – he bought a 'quad' for 84 bucks less than what Tower is selling them for but without electronics!
The big deal is that this one doesn’t need a driver figure or electronics as it is a kids “full size” real quad bike with a 50cc engine, electric start etc.
Now when a 1/8th quad that weighs 13lb and is 21 inches long sells for a lot more than what a 1/1 quad that probably weighs at least 150lb and is 6 foot long it makes me wonder who is ripping us off?
Cheers

I've been in the process of making a Pro 2/MT conversion after seeing someone do it on here (I think it was here).
One thing i noticed was the front castor on the MT is far greater than the Pro 2. What sort of effect will this have on the handling in the dirt?
Also, having the larger diffs in the MT, obviously gives the car a lower ratio. But if I use the Pro 2 32 tooth diffs and then lower the gearing will this effectively have the same result?
I haven't continuesd with it, because of these two reasons. But if all is well, I'll get stuck into it again.
If you've got any pics of your Pro conversion, that'd be great to see them.

Haven't tried it out yet - hope to do so this afternoon!
Original internal gear ratio was 2.6 - Pro 2 with 32T diffs = 2.13 so you will have to go down several teeth on the pinion! Eg. if you were using 22/96 gears with the 2.6 ratio you would have to go down to 18/96 to achieve the same rollout with the 2.13 ratio!

Took the MT Pro out this afternoon and it seemed to be more responsive but perhaps that was wishful thinking! Was having great fun until as they 'rain stopped play' and my spotless new rebuild was covered in mud! Here are some pics after the run! One problem I had was with the wide bumper fouling the tyres on full lock - had to dial out my steering to prevent them jamming!
Re: Castor - the castor on the conversion looks the same as on my other HPI's

I had a lot of play in the rear arms of the MT Pro conversion at both the inner and outer hinge pins. I thought that it was worn arms so I replaced them with new composite ones – made no difference! Then I noticed that the play was in the gearbox ‘supports’ and in the hubs! Strange as there was no play in the Pro! Further examination showed the culprit to be the MT ‘screw in’ hinge pins. Replaced them with the Pro’s hinge pins with C clips + spacers and no more slop! The MT’s screw in hinge pins don’t show any wear apart from the ‘black’ being shiny in places so it seems as if the hinge pins from the Pro are slightly thicker than the MT’s!
As was mentioned before – buy yourself a RS4 Pro and get lots of upgrades for the MT for cheap!
My next intended upgrade is titanium turnbuckles / tie rods! Haven’t bent any as yet – they just look weak! Does anyone have any advice on this?
Cheers

Wow, I cant believe I have post #7 on this thread.... its been about two years since i've been "out" of the hobby (but i still have all my cars). Started around 1999 (you know, back when Robinson still made ally topshafts for these), and i'm slowly starting to get back in though.
Anyway, I can't believe I still remember all this stuff, or whether its in this thread, but the thing with the pro chassis conversions is that they will break. Usually on larger jumps it happens, but the snap right in half.
Anyone still remember the Super Rally MT (basically a mix of Super Nitro RS4 parts and an MT)?

Hi
I've just been reading all the old posts on the MT. There seemed to be regular postings from you guys and then it just stopped at the end of 2004! Any reason why?
Perhaps this forum is going the same way as there have been no new regular posts for ages!

Yep... interest has died down after they discontinued the truck. I still have mine plus a ton of new parts. I'm thinking of selling all of it. It's too bad... it was definitely a fun truck.

Hi All
Had occasion tonight to check out the Japanese HPI website!
Guess what is listed as current along with the new 'Wheely King'?
The RS4 MT! http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
No active links to anything but it is there! Are HPI going to re-release it?
The Japanese web site contains lots of other references to models which on the USA website are described as 'discontinued'!
Why the difference?
Cheers

Nice having money again. I have FINALLY made my RS4 Pro2 MT conversion. Just finished the body today.
I've got a Mamba Max 7700KV installed. I went with the 7700 so I can get the most out of 6 cells. I'm not ready to move to LiPO's.
Check it out:

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!
What specifically are you looking for? Part numbers?
I've got MOST of the HPI hopups for the MT (and a spare NIB graphite front chassis brace for it), but some of the upgrades still elude me.
ETA: As a side note, I wish they'd bring this model back, as I love mine. Unfortunately, I doubt HPI will, with their going to shaft drive for most of their kits.

Sadly, the Rs4 MT is fairly dead, so "hop ups" are kinda a lost cause. It shares much with the RS4 Pro2 car and the Nitro MT, but not a whole lot.
I have one. I am not interested in using it any more. It is HEAVILY modified with carbon fiber chassis, full bearings, ball diffs, you name it. If you are interested, let me know.
Basically, I took an RS4 Pro2 touring cars and threw the rs4mt suspension on it. It's a fast kit, but there's noone to race with :-/
I also have all the old stock parts and the parts from the RS4 Pro2 I gutted.

This is the RS4MT's main page on HPI's site: http://www.hpiracing.com/kits/mt/mt-m.htm The manual can be viewed and printed here: http://www.hpiracing.com/instructions/instr-emt.htm Both the stock part #'s and optional part #'s are available by clicking on their individual links. Getting some of the optional parts is difficult, as there's not a lot of them around anymore. If you're interested, I do have an extra (new in package) A700 graphite chassis brace I'd be willing to sell. PM me if you're interested.

Oh, I'll definitely have it. Funny story, I got out of R/C for a long time, and after getting back into it, wanted to get most/all of the option parts for my RS4-MT. I saw this in a store, and on impulse, I bought it. I dug out my RS4-MT (it was in a large container with most of my other R/C gear), and only then did I realize that it already had one installed. http://www.123myspace.com/myspacecursors/cursors/7484.gif

I found my Lunsford Titanium turnbuckles through a dealer on eBay (the name is rcprocenter, and they're a hobby store in Maryland), although I didn't buy through eBay. I bought the turnbuckles and 3 ball diffs (which are the same ball diffs used by the Super Nitro RS4), and received them real quick. As far as shocks go, I believe Tower Hobbies still carries them.
I will get back on this info thanks
This is a body that I did.

I wanted this truck so bad. It was going to be my next truck after I got my first one, a Stampede. I just bought an EMaxx but I am looking for one of these now that I have been reminded how awesome it is. It always intrigued me.
Yes I love this lil truck. I am looking for the 2 speed for this kit.

You should get off-road tires for it. Mine came with Dirthawgs (Baja Bug kit)and they where good tires. I have yet to try out my HPI Geolanders though.
