Nobody had a thread going yet so I started one in the Nitro forum, then this opened so I'm putting it in here (feel free to delete the Nitro forum version :))
Anyway, speculation as to who will be this years champ? Will the Kyosho tradition continue? Or will one of the underdogs conquer the dog catcher?
Please no bashing, yelling, insulting, or any kind of harassment. Thanks :)

HB Lightning Pro2 is going to sweep it..

Kyosho has some awesome drivers (Tebo, Pavidas, Kortz, Degani), but I think Hobao (AKA OFNA) has a really good shot at winning because one of their drivers literally owns the track.

my money is on pavidis or tebo.

I am pulling for Taylor James to win it. He races at my home track (www.real-rc.com) and drives one of the new Thunder Tiger S3's. But if he doesn't I hope it is one of the Mugen guys preferrably Ashton. :)

I think its Smartech's year to win...;)

It will defiently be an interesting race with MP777's, XB8's, and X5 Prospecs going head to head; basically a huge manufacturer battle for who has the best, newest toy.

Thank you for the laugh. ;) :D

I think its going to be Kyosho again. The HoBao and Hot Bodies stuff won't last an hour so they don't matter, and I don't think Xray and Mugen have the drivers. If Degani or HoBao win I will cut my wrists. :D

I personally think xray has a good chance with thier new buggy. They design some awsome stuff thats almost impossible to break. I am sure they will come up with some world class drivers by then.

Now that everyone's said something, I'm personally pulling for Mugen (Specifically Ashton). I think they've probably got the best shot outside of Kyosho.
One of the OFNA drivers owns the track? Is that really fair??

Young Jarad Tebo Is looking particularly strong this year I think Uichi Kanai Has had his day..I would really like to see Tebo Get this under his belt It would be like another Kinwald story...But I think Pavidis May just be this years No.1...what do you think.?...

Mikael Palsson is a Hobao sponsored driver. He owns the Furulund track where the 2004 worlds is being held at. Its also mostly concrete, so the layout can't really be changed much either.

It would not surprise me at all if local Swedish drivers were to sweep the podium. The homefield advantage is huge.

C'mon, its ok to be proud of the car you own but lets be realistic. Anyone who has experience with most buggies would N E V E R go into a world championship race with a Hobao, TTR, Hot Bodies, Duratrax or other basher buggy. The ones that will be racing those buggies are getting paid to race them. Take all the money away and see what happens then. ;)

Its nothing personal just my opinion based on a lot of experience with a lot of buggies.

I hope a Storm come through on them, but realisticlly I think Tebo or Pavidis using a K car will win.

Have you seen one of the new Thunder Tiger S3's? It is definately not a basher buggy. ;)

Mugen will be in the thick of things. Back in 2002 they took second and third. With drivers like Ashton, Bradley, and Osaka, they definitely don't have a shortage of qualified drivers.

Well Pavidis is officially the 2nd place qualifier with Frances Yannick Aigoin in first. It is an interesting top ten with 3 Kyosho's, 2 Mugens, 2 Ofnas, a Crono and a Berganzoni.

THe mains should be quite interesting concidering Yannick can supposedly go up to 14 minutes on 1 tank of fuel....

Paul C and Josh W. are looking good for having a buggy for only a week.

and 18. Joseph Quagraine is doing the due when his hyper too.

The information I had seen suggested that all prior runs were disqualified because the tank is assumed to be over capacity for the duration of the event. As I understand it, TQ is lost as well. I didn't see anything specific, but the rules are the rules and if it were only 1 cc or .5cc, it's still over the limit. They should have been more thorough in the set-up of the car to ensure the tank wasn't too big. Most other drivers put a length of fuel tubing inside the tank to reduce capacity and be sure they're within the limit.

That sounds pretty stupid to me! That is something a driver or any consumer has no control over. It is strictly the factories fault. There is not even a performance gain over .5 or even 2cc. Are we all supposed to go buy something to measure our tanks with now! That type of thing really gets me off!

I would suggest you cool off a little. This isn't rookie Busch league RTR racing, this is world championship racing. It's been a common practice for many, many years that drivers check and "tune" the capacity of their fuel tank. The capacity is checked including the fuel line, so if they didn't ensure that the capacity was within the rules, then it's their own fault. Everyone that races at this level expects to have to check the capacity of their tank. This is also a factory HoBao driver, so he knows the capacity of the tank better than anyone. If he has one to two extra loops of fuel tubing between the tank and the carb, or if he puts a couple filters in line, that could increase tank capacity 3 to 4cc alone.

Not that this is relevant to the issue, but there most certainly is a performance advantage to having even a little extra fuel. It enables you to run a more powerful engine or a larger carb insert to get more power and still make reasonable time intervals between fuel stops. If that extra fuel is what allows a racer to go 1/2 lap extra when they would otherwise have to pit one lap earlier, there is a definite advantage.

He was getting 14min runtimes. When was the last time you got that much out of your engine?

StevePond
08-08-2004, 09:04 PM
That's an urban legend. Nobody was getting that kind of fuel economy from their engines. He was pitting at the same intervals as everyone else, which was every 12 to 13 laps, which was a little less than 7 minutes a tank. A myth like that comes out every time a worlds is run. ;) :D

Wasn't the mugen tank also found to be illegal until they let the car cool down to normal temperatures or something? I heard it from a guy that came into the shop.

This doesn't have anything to do with Kyosho. It's the IFMAR officials that checked the tank size. It's a common practice for them to randomly check tank size, nitro content, pipe stinger size, carb size, etc.

I think it is a tradgedy that Yannick was DQ'd, but rules are rules and you have to race by them. It would have been awesome to see HoBao woop up on the big-K. So many people think the Hyper7 is a 'basher' buggy. Lot's of guys I race with run the Hyper 7 PBS/PCR version and it can certainly hold its own against the Kanai-III and MBX5.

At least it is good to know that they teched the cars frequently ... the world can be assured the TQ honor was valid.

That sounds pretty stupid to me!

I just learned some more information that adds a new twist to the whole disqualification thing. If you want to hear stupid, follow this... It's one of those things that make you go "Duh!"

Many of you may have heard the nonsense about how Aigoin was running 12 to 14 minutes on a tank. The story was that Aigoin was running less than half throttle and still mantaining pace with the world's best drivers who were driving all out (red flags should be waving with anyone that has a brain right about now). This, as the story goes, is what was getting him such good fuel economy. That is easily debunked by looking at the time sheets for every one of his runs where is shows he's pitting about every 12 to 13 laps, or about 6:30 to 6:45 per tank. Pure nonsense, but here's where it gets really "Duh."

Based in part on this totally unfounded rumor that Aigoin, who is a French HoBao driver, was running 14 minutes on a tank of fuel, the Spanish distributor for HoBao filed a protest because his Hobao guys were not able to run as long on a single tank of fuel. So, HoBao is responsible for filing a protest against another HoBao driver, and that's why the top qualifier didn't get an chance to fight for the win at the worlds. He was hosed by a member of his own team. You can't make this stuff up....

repete

Ouch! I wonder if he (Aigoin) will leave HoBao over this?!

... pitting about every 12 to 13 laps, or about 6:30 to 6:45 per tank.
I guess I wouldn't call this too unusual. This must mean that drivers were pitting during qualifiers, too(?). Any idea what laps/times other drivers were pitting on?

'nuff said,
MX4

StevePond
08-11-2004, 02:31 PM
Pavidis and Aigoin were both pitting on the exact same lap most of the time. I spoke with one of Mark Pavidis's team and they were able to stretch a tank to 8+ minutes, but they were still coming in at the same intervals as Aigoin.

rcboy201
08-11-2004, 03:36 PM
so Aigoin pretty much lost the worlds over a stupid rumor

StevePond
08-11-2004, 03:49 PM
Well, you can't presume that he would have won just because he got TQ. The main is an hour long event and many things can happen. Aigoin might have broke, flamed out, crashed or suffered any number of set-backs that are common in races like this. He only lost his opportunity to run in the main. He lost that opportunity because his tank held more than the legal capacity and nothing else. The fact that a rumor contributed to the paranoia that led his own team to file a formal protest makes it even more ironic.

there was no protest because of a rumor, Aigoin was DQ'ed during the normal post race tech

racinlosi
08-12-2004, 04:04 PM
But why did his team mate make that rumor? Sounds a little fishy to me. Some one should be looking out to see if his team mate switches sponsors or quits some time soon. Either that, or he was cut by HoBao and they made him illeagle to tell him that he was cut(donno, just a thought.).

Either way, he should have been able to stay in the race, just change the fuel line to make it shorter, and your good to go!

i highly doubt they are going to cut someone who just TQ at the worlds

StevePond

there was no protest because of a rumor, Aigoin was DQ'ed during the normal post race tech

We hade one of our editors at the race, and he said there was a protest filed to check the capacity of Aigoin's fuel tank, and that the protest was filed by the Spanish importer of HoBao cars. This person is not the source of the 14-minutes-per-tank nonsense, but he is a HoBao representative. I'm sure he was trying to keep everyone honest and was focused on the interest of his Spanish team, but you have to wonder if he thought it through before filing a protest against someone driving the car he imports. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

sorry to say but your editer has got some bad info, as soon as the semi was over the cars were teched and that is when he failed, it is rumored that he changed fuel tank, and usa's team manger noted when he was there when they checked the tank in front of him to sign the dq that it looked like he had new fuel line, however the rumor about a protest over the 14 min rumor is very untrue

This from Jay Halsey who acted as USA Team manager at the W.C.

I want to congratulate the US team as a whole for working together
during the W.C. and for their respectable results. Congratulations
also to IFMAR and The Swedish R/C Club for running a top notch event
which was on schedule and consistant.

Concerning the DQ, I would like to clear any rumors or speculation. As
acting US Team Manager, I was asked to review the decision. The
decision was based on the following;

The tank was tested post race at 126.5cc and then rechecked 15 minutes
after at 125.5cc. At this point, I was called in for review where I
was informed of this information. The officials had the tank, fuel
line, and filters on hand. I was asked to sign the disqualification as
Roar representative. I refused to do so and demanded a recheck in my
presence.

IFMAR President (John Grant), Ifmar Vice Pres., Efra Rep. (Dallas),
and the 2 tech inspectors that had been checking tanks all week
returned to tech inspection. I witnessed the tech inspection of the
questioned tank from start to finish. They followed the procedure and
rules to the letter. The fuel was at room temperature etc.. Upon
inspection, I found the level to be at 125.5cc. The beecker was
graduated at tenths of a cc and the difference between 125cc and
125.5cc was about 3/16 of an inch. Very visible by the eye.

We also reviewed post tech records for the driver in question during
qualifying and found the tank was measured at the legal limit each of
those times of 125cc. There was no pre-semi record of tank inspection.

During the above mentioned inspection done for myself, I noted that
the fuel line appeared to be new and put on just prior to the semi.
This was just an observation out of curiosity and had no bearing on
any decisions.

At this point, I had to agree with the disqualification. I personally
don't think this gave him an advantage on the track, but it was a
clear violation of the rules.

Yannick's efforts were dominate all week long, and in my opinion, he
had the best chance at winning the W.C.. He was a gentleman throughout
this unfortunate circumstance and I respect and commend him for that.
He was welcomed at the trophy presentation more than once with a
standing ovation.

My decision was not altered by, nor bias toward affiliation with any
manufarturer or organization, but based solely on the rules and
regulations of IFMAR.

Race on,
Jay Halsey

Yeah Steve, you got some wrong info there, the spanish team never filed a protest, only the french did against the disqualification
