do any of the jet engines have afterburners?

Hi,
Nope. The design and extra weight of the tailpipe would run the cost way up, besides, an afterburner drinks fuel like it is going out of style. Meanwhile, most of the current turbines are likely to overpower the models they are in unless throttled back, so there is little need for extra thrust.

Although you could probably rig one in a similar way to how the smoke generators work. Some fuel lines (2-4 spaced evenly) that exit in a tube at the rear of the jet engine and a high volume fuel pump would act like an afterburner, but you woulld essentially be pumping fuel out of the tanks at a very high rate. The average afterburner uses up 4 times the fuel that the rest of the engine does. This means that your 5-10 min runtimes would be shortened to 1-2mins. Still, if all you were trying to do was go VERY fast for a short time, then this would work.

Just an FYI, the F14A Tomcat can burn up its full fuel load in less than 15 minutes at full afterburner. It can normally fly 3+ hours on the same fuel load.

if your a us flyer according to ama rules an afterburner is not allowed but if you live out side the us its ok

I've seen it done with lights around the turkey feathers...
With a turbine gulping 10+ oz. a min. you'd be really making a shortened hop if you did light it. If you have ever seen a turbine wet start you would know why it isn't a popular idea.

plus, one thing you may have forgotten, the jet efflux of a fighter engine is moving at roughly the speed of sound or higher, which is where an afterburner likes to operate. it's kind of like a mix of high spped air and heat that make an afterburner work like a seperate ramjet. that's why there are spray rings and flame holder rings in an afturburner.......to make this work. our model engines just don't have the efflux speeds to make it a practical mod. it could be hooked up from a seperate tank to make a pretty cool light show, but no real effects would be gained by doing this. hope this helps and keep us posted if you can pull this off as a spectacular lightshow. if you are serious about this, I have some ideas and drawings of how this could work for just such a slow speed efflux. ttyl.
