Im relatively new to this RC thing and recently acquired a xxx-s with a few assorted used brush motors. Its a pretty fast car at this point (40+mph no problem), but Im getting sick of all the motor maintenance, brushes, comm cutting.. all that BS.. So with that said, Im starting to look into a brushless set up. I like the price of the Novak SS5800 system, however, it seems like there are some quality consistency issues with the product, and with my luck my frustration would only continue to grow. I'd like to push the top end of this car well up into the 50's if possible. So what I'm looking for are some comparable (RELIABLE) BL motor options that will get me where I want to be in this hobby. Fire suggestions at will.. Thanks in advance..

EDIT: Ok I did a little reading while at work (gotta get paid for somethign right?) and Id like some opinions on whether or not this motor/controller combo will work for what I want..

Motor will do just fine, but the ESC won't do all that well. That's a boat ESC, and may not deliver the best performance, or strong enough brakes, etc. Try a Schulze U-force 75 or something like an 18.61K. You can also wait till starluckrc.com gets their schulze controllers in, but that'll be in another 3 weeks or so. :)

Esc won't work, but the motor will be more than enough power. Unfortunately, the U-Force is about 3 weeks out with only 18.97kw coming in next week. That will all be solved soon enough though as I'm giving them plenty to build when they get back from holiday...LOL!

Just call Etienne at I-CARE, it's in Canada and he have the U-FORCE 75 in stock. Phone number is 1-450-449-9094.

Whats the best price on the U-Force 75 at the current time?

That can depend, where are you located?
If you're in Canada then I-Care is likely the cheapest, if you're in the US then modelflight in Australia may be cheaper, if you don't mind waiting a bit I'm sure StarluckRC will be the cheapest.

Im in the US (NY to be specific). Im sure waiting wouldnt be a problem since Id have to get the money together.

Then I'd recommend contacting Jamie at StarLuckRC - I'm pretty sure you'll find he can offer the best pricing and deliver the ESC and motor you want.

Thanks TheSteve,

Not to mention I-Care is out, and being my distributor, I tend to buy up whatever they have...lol! Not to worry. My prices will be as good or better with some killer combo deals. Stay tuned!

Sounds good.. Thanks for the heads up on that.. In the possible case that the U force 75 puts me over budget, is there a similar, comparable, ESC that will do the job for slightly less money?

18.61K from schulze is the answer.

It doesn't have the smoothmess of the UF, nor is it as powerfull ( less Amp rating and you can't use the BEC on more than 7 cells )

But it is still a quality controller that should work pretty good for your project.

I think price is around 220 US$ ( 50/80 US$ less than the UF )

DaFF- I thought the U-Force ran for about 250 USD and the 18.61K ran for about 225 USD (18.61K price is from finedesign, U-Force is from I-Care).
I didn't know the 18.61K had a BEC either! Neato...

18.61K: 209 US$, UF-75 : 289 US$ @ ICARE

UF is good up to 12 cells, BEC to 12 cells as well. 75 amp continuous, 100 Amp peak

18.61K is good up to 18 cells, opto ( so no BEC, you were right ), 62 Amp continous, 81 Amp peak

For the 18.61K, you can nevertheless use your receiver BEC... otherwise, you can buy an Ultimate BEC ( 37 US$ )

Ah...gotcha. I coulda swore I saw a U-Force for 250 USD. Maybe it was at modelflight. No matter. Thanks for the clarification. :)

Thanks for all the input guys.. I think Ill probably hold off and see what kinda motor/controller combo deals Starluck is gonna offer. I dont plan on running more than 7 cells so Im guessing that either of the controllers you suggested would be adequate for the motor I spec'd in my orig. post. By any chance do any of you guys have a brushless motor and or controller that you'd be interested in selling? In near-original condition of course. :)

Model Flight has them for 250. I inquired earlier in the week about them and they said that they had one left but should have more at the end of Aug.

Probably a dumb question.. whats a BEC?

ElectricThunder

BEC= Battery Elminator Circuit

Basically, it eliminates the need for a receiver pack, and allows the radio's receiver to run off of the car's battery.

Thank you! That's the one I was talking about, not I-care... :o

So with a ESC that has no BEC what's typically used to power the reciever? Just a power lead spliced into the batterie wires (would any stepping down of the voltage be required in that case)? Or would it require a separate smaller battery? If so whats the typical size?

Yeah I am a brushless noob... :)

A separate battery is used, I believe a 6 volt pack (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone?). There are many available, most with 5 cells (not sure what size but smaller than sub-C cells, in general pretty small battery packs). Capacity can be 1000 mAh or a little more, it depends.

......or a voltage regulator such as a U-BEC.

So that's like a way to "make" a BEC if the system doesn't have one? Uses power from the main battery pack but regulates the voltage? Pretty cool.

I have one of these ultimate BEC (http://www.koolflightsystems.com/ultimatebec.htm) units it works good. Simple to wire up. It is small compared to an rx pack and it wieghs alot less.
You'd want the one for a car, 6 volts.
