JUST CAME BACK FROM THE LOCAL LAKE TODAY. THERE IS A SMALL BOAT CLUB OF RACERS AND JUST HAVE FUNNERS. ONE OF THE LOCAL HYDRO RACERS MADE A SHORT RUN, MADE SOME TWEAKING AND WENT OUT AGAIN, WITH GPS ABOARD. BOAT WAS SCREAMING!!! 113 MPH  THIS WAS HIS FIRST REAL RUN WITH A NEW CUSTOM SCRATCH BUILT. WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE. BEING THAT THIS WAS ALSO DONE ON A CLOSE COURSE!! KEEPING TIGHT TO THE BOUYS!!

JUST THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE THAT WITH EVERYONE, THAT HERE IN S. FLORIDA, NO STORM CAN STOP THE R/C BOAT FANATICS. :D

There are some good electric racers in Florida, Rum Runner Racing is based there. Where are you at or where did you see it run? Kind of funny that they had a GPS onboard as they do add a lot of weight plus take up space in an electric boat.

HI RON, I AM LOCATED IN SARASOTA FL. THERE IS A LARGE LAKE APROX 2 MILES FROM MY HOUSE. THERE IS A LOCAL RACING CLUB THAT MEETS THERE EVERY SUNDAY. MOST OF THE GUYS TRAVEL ALL OVER FOR RACES. THEY ARE VERY SERIOUS! :) THEY WERE PRACTICING AND TWEAKING LAST WEEK FOR A RACE IN FT. LAUDERDALE/WEST PALM THAT I THINK TAKES PLACE NEXT WEEKEND. ANYWAY THE BOAT THAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT IS NOT ELECTRIC, ITS NITRO. ABOUT A 36IN HYDRO, POWERED BY TWIN 84'S,
HE HAD A SMALL BOX COMPARTMENT IN THE REAR THAT HE KEPT A SMALL HANDHELD GARMIN GPS IN A ZIPLOC BAG. HE MADE A RUN, WHEN RETURNED THE GPS READ IN THE MID 90'S. THEN THE WIND PICKED UP A BIT(GAVE A NICE SLIGHT CHOP) AND HE WENT OUT AGAIN. THATS WHEN HE HIT 113MPH. HE DID TWEAK THE ENGINE'S DURING THE RUN THOUGH. AFTER HE WENT AROUND SHOWING EVERYONE THE READ OUT ON THE GPS SO THAT THERE WAS NO DOUBT. ( WAS SICK FAST TO ME ) BUT WAS COOL TO WITNESS!!!

Wouldn't that throw off the CG if he placed it in the rear of the boat?

Somehow I got the idea that it was electric, I din't know why. Yeah, there are some sick fast nitro boaters there too. Next time try to get some names or pix. I don't know Florida at all but it could have been the Browns, Andy and John, doing some running. Andy currently holds the nitro World record.

AS THE DETAILS OF (CG) NOT SURE HOW HE SET UP HIS BOAT, DID NOT REALLY ASK. ALL I KNOW IS WHAT I SAW. HE HAS OVER A GRAND IN ENGINES ALONE, THAT I KNOW. I WILL BE GOING OUT TO THE LAKE TOMMOROW. THE FELLOW WITH THE 113 MPH HYDRO TOLD ME LAST WEEKEND THAT HE MIGHT NOT BE THERE THIS WEEKEND. BUT WILL NEXT WEEKEND BECAUSE RIGHT BEFORE RACE IN S. FLORIDA. Okay.... edited.

HD, I'll tell you something: I've got a lot of respect for you.

Back to the boat issue... If he says its true, then like most sportsmen we need to take it for what its worth ie, a true statement. Like a lot of guys I'd like to hear more about this setup, hull, etc.

"Rock on but dont rock the boat". A saying I'll try to take to heart.

Later guys.

Calm down DD. I had a run in with a new member in a different thread a few days ago. This guy told me I was a waste of every ones time and a help to no one, to paraphrase him. It's not something to get banned from the site over, so let it go. Besides, how many members are there who can help people? We don't need to loose any from a pride attack.

CFRACR, the same goes for you. Nobody here saw what you claim to have seen. 113 MPH is a hard one to believe, so if you can get a name, a hull manufacturer or something, it would make it easier. DD's been around this site a lot longer than either of us, so people listen to him. Don't go ruining it for anybody by getting into a "mud slinging contest", it's just not worth it

I Wish That I Had My Camera With Me So That I Could Have Taken A Pic Of The Boat And The Gps Reading The Speed. But No Camera :( I Will Get A Chance Again Though And Will Try To Do So, That Way This Thread Will Possibly Grow.

CF, the guys probably saw that you are new to this site so they found it hard to believe. Some people have a hard time looking at a running boat and estimating the speed but you had the proof in seeing not one, but two GPS readings. I've been around this hobby/sport long enough to remember when 100 was the magic number, now it's not uncommon to see boats running at or near that speed. The record way back when I first got into boats was around 93.
Oh yeah, welcome back to boating!

:) What threw me was "BEING THAT THIS WAS ALSO DONE ON A CLOSE COURSE!! KEEPING TIGHT TO THE BOUYS!!" at 113 mph? I can see a serious guy doing that on a long straightaway, but not on an oval... it's just that it has never been done before in the books, not 100+ mph around a standard oval right on the bouys :) :) :)

Good boating :)

What class, sanctioning body, oval, straightaway? hehe

the fastest official straightaway record for nitro is right at 120mph, although I understand andy brown has reached 130 mph unofficially

the fastest oval speeds I've ever heard of down a straight are around 95 mph.

hydroracer
08-24-2004, 03:13 PM
It's worth noting that there are probably less than 20 or 30 people in the entire country that can push any type of rc boat past the "mere" 100 mph mark. So 113 mph is very impressive

hydroracer
08-24-2004, 05:38 PM
it's an andy brown outrigger, the same guy who holds the record built the boat

Competition Marine Designs (http://www.cmdracing.com/updated/main.htm)

anyone can buy the equipment capable of those speeds, but not anyone can get the equipment to work in harmony to turn the propeller to get those speeds. It takes a lot of experience

Ron Olson
08-24-2004, 05:48 PM
Two people that I know of have been over 130 MPH unofficially, Andy and Mark Grim. Mark disintegrated his boat after the first pass so the second run was not possible. Andy's record was set in conditions that were not favorable at the time and was done on a new, previously untested boat. Just think of how fast he could have gone or will go with it dialed in! It's still possible that he could break 130 yet this year. One problem that he ran into was that the cowling on his boat was causing lift at speed so he made his runs without it. A new one is supposed to be in the works.

NO EXACT ON THE CLASS, JUST THAT ITS A OPEN HYDRO
I SAW THIS BOAT LOSE IT AROUND A BOUY ONCE, IT PLAIN LIFTED OFF ANG FLIPPED FOR ABOUT 25-30YRDS AND LANDED UPSIDE DOWN. HE RETRIED IT, FLUSHED IT AND RAN AGAIN ABOUT 30MINUTES LATER. ( WITH NO DAMAGE ) THAT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE BUILD.

yeah Ron, those 2 guys are without a doubt faster than any other nitro rc boaters on the planet to date by an amazing margin. You could probably count on 2 hands the guys that have been over 110 mph, and a few (I'd say most of them) had either Andy's or Mark's help to get there.

Just to shoot the $h!7, if lithium cell technology continues at its current pace, electrics will eventually make 150 mph and beyond within a few years, putting them effectively out of internal combustion speed range. Doesn't seem right, does it? :D It's just that the rpm capability of brushless electric motors puts them out of piston-power capability. As battery weight decreases and their voltage and capacity increases, it's inevitable. I also see geared-shaft turbines possibly rearing their heads over the next decade, we'll see how that goes, but they're cost prohibitive at $5000 a pop , so they may never be practical. Geared down, they could turn a large prop 40,000+ rpm theoretically. Turbines are All About The Benjamins. At that price, they are reserved for the wealthy and insanely-obsessed-need-some-medical-help type of boat modellers :D .

Got news for you Hydroracer, MHZ has a diesel/kerosene fueled twin shaft turbine engine under development right now  MHZ claims an N1 at over 100,000 RPM and an N2 of 53,000 RPM going into a 2.7 to 1 gearbox  That roughly equals 20,000 RPM to the prop at an (MHZ)estimated 7 HP. They say its size limits it to boats over 60", but think of the prop you could spin with that kind of power!!!! I'd love to get one and put it in my 1/6th scale Oh Boy! Oberto. It would fit with almost no modifications to the hull. I bet it would scream at over 100 MPH with that drive system spinning an Octura 2268 three blade prop. Gee, does this mean I'm an INSANELY OBSESSED NEED SOME MEDICAL HELP TYPE BOAT MODELLER? HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Went and got some specs from the MHZ turbine engine
Diameter 120 mm
Weight w/gearbox 3850 grams
N1 118,000 RPM
N2 58,000 RPM
Power Rating 7.4 HP
Fuel Consumption 200 mililiters/minute @ Full throttle, 70 mililiters/minute @ Idle
This gives the prop a corrected top speed of 21,481 RPM at 7.4 HPthrough the 2.7:1 gearbox. Unfortunately, no TORQUE figures were given :(

That would be a sight to behold! :D

The speed limiting factor I see with these is the weight, almost 8.5 pounds . A new quickdraw can put out the same horsepower at half the weight. Torque is a factor, the turbine geared that way may be able to swing a super duper monster prop. Aaaaaaaaaah, the sound of a turbine in a scale unlimited would be awesome. :)

Not to worry. There's you, me and Hydromania, as far as I know. He was refering to the pic posted of some of my unfinished boats in one of the scratchbuilding threads. Also FYI, MHZ also is working on TWO 1/6th scale hydros to put the turbine into, a 1991-94 Budweiser and a Miss Trendwest

hydroracer
08-25-2004, 11:05 PM
Using the formula HP=Torque x RPM/5,252 , the turbine is putting out 1.81 ft/lbs of torque at 21,481 rpm :)

whatever that means :D

Hydro Junkie
08-25-2004, 11:10 PM
That works out to .03 ftlbs less than a full race Hanson 260Pum, but with 2.5 more horses. Sounds like it's time to do some serious thinking about cost to weight ratios. A full race 260 costs about $600, the turbine is unknown. The 260 tops out at 5,000 less RPM than the turbine. The turbine weighs 2-3 times more than the 260 and uses more fuel. The 260 uses pump gas w/2 stroke oil, the turbine diesel or kerosine. The 260 has a pull start, the turbine has an electric start. The 260 can be used in any boat over about 40", the turbine needs a 60"+ boat. Decisions, decisions. I LIKE THE TURBINE!!!! What else should you put into a 1/6th TURBINE HYDROPLANE

Florida does have some of the fastest boats in the US and they wrap up some serious money into their boats. They'll blow up a $1,000.00 modded motor and not think anything about it, just grab another one out of the box! Some of the boaters down there have Professional jobs, Doctors, Lawyers, etc. so this is just toy money to them.

Hey CFR those are some nice boats, just read the thread and it impressed me. I am one of the new guys into nitro boats, just broke in my Proboat Shockwave36 which I gps'd at 30mph without any tuning yet.
Now I live in New England on a pond and have been trying to run everyday for the last two weeks, never more than an hour at a time as the temps are sometimes unbearable. Sorry, back on topic, I thought, as do my few spectators, that my boat was the fastest thing around but after reading this thread I have become educated and have plans of building a fast nitro.

This site rocks, I love spending hours at a time reading here.
Thanks to all who participate.

I love it when old threads come back to the top. I think this was when CFCR was a new guy and we gave him a hard time for his first post or something like that. :D Memories & friendships made. :) Now Cape Cod Shockwaver, get into the action with a digi camera and show us some work.:)

The first red twin pictured with the twins is a Road Runner, they are built there in Florida near St. Pete. They build boats from .21 up to the Twins and are the BEST heat racing hydro around (in my humble opinion). The twin Road Runner has especially done well. I have a .67 Road Runner that I set up for heat racing to run 10 sec laps. It is adrenaline at its finest.

DD- I heard my name......

SW'er-- Welcome to the site and the wonderful world of R/C boating. Lots to learn and it never stops, so always keep your ear to the ground.

KM- Yes if I remember right it was a RoadRunner. Was running twin mod-Mac 84's. This particular boat had lots of time & money put into it. The turn fin alone was custom lathe'd, and a picture of beauty. I still have a video somewhere on my hardrive. Shows this 3k + boat in action.

 Whats up? I lurk every once in awhile. Saw this old post come to life & had to post.

I have been really busy lately, with new son & new work project. So when I get a little spare free time. I hit the lake, not the PC. I should be getting to a settle point here soon though. My big work project that I have been on since April is comming to a end. I will be taking some time off & might get back into a scratch build that I started early last year. That and a few other boats that need a little time into them. I do still have 4 that are running just fine & get to the water when time permits.
