View Full Version : header pipe porting????
Has anyone ported their header pipe. The header pipe is way smaller then the port on the head. Has anyone dremeled their header to increase flow a little and also did it help at all? Any reply would be great.

since i know you're talking about your hammer, i kinda have to jump in here :D i ported mine out. it will definitely increase flow, but i can't say how well it improved performance. you'll probably want to get new header gaskets in the process. i found that the HPI .15 gaskets work perfectly.

Porting the header on any engine will help with exhaust flow.

I would say definantly do it. I always do but couldn't really give an estimate on the increase. The HPI or the Traxxas gaskets are the ticket here. After running the motor there should be some coloring on the headder where it is restricting flow. Open it up and smoothe it out. Just make sure you don't go outside the gasket line.

I dont know why the guys that design these engines take dont care of this problem.I did the same thing to my auqua jet .The opening was alot smaller than it should be.I opened it up from the beginning so i do not know of an increase.I do love this 16 engine .The only time this engine quits is when I flipped it twice (not fun ) or ran the tank dry ,( I use a watch now and bring it in at 5 minutes .

I've done this on all of my .12 motors. I generally use the Traxxas header on my boats but most headers could benefit from this almost no cost work. The proper gasket is important as some are just as restricted as the headers. The Traxxas or Team Losi gaskets work best, the Losi is less brittle. Match up the gasket to the pipe then use something to mark the blockage. An awl or Sharpie wil do. I use a short stack of those cheap Dremel cut-off wheels, use new as they will all be the same diameter. Usually a stack of 4 is what I use. Grind a bevel into the header, making sure that you don't go through the pipe. When done, clean out all of the metal dust before re-installing.
How much this helps, I don't know, but it can't hurt!

Hey Ron which headder do you use?? I tried the one from the old rustler and it worked but all the unburned oil would lock up the cylinder on re-start. I put a nipple in the bottom of the elbow like the "automatic" oiler in the N.Vee, but it' didn't realy move enough oil away. The N. Vee headder I think is too small and has no kick up which makes pipe placement a pain.
