I am planning to buy a radio-controlled airplane, and I am sort of bewildered by all the choices, so I am asking for some guidance. Also, I have some non-conventional requirements, because I am planning to use it for a science-fair type project, but I also want to fly this airplane recreationally. Below are my needs, in order of priority, with the most important on top:

The airplane needs to be easily modifiable, that is, I want to be able to attach a programmable chip, and be able to control the airplane this way.

The airplane must have a fairly long run-time, preferably at least 20 minutes. It is in this area that I am undecided whether to get a gas or electric plane. I would prefer to have an electric plane, but will one be able to give me this flight time?

I need an airplane that has the four basic control degrees (for lack of a better word): Aileron, Rudder, Elevator, and Throttle.

The airplane needs to be able to carry a small amount of weight, maybe half a pound.

The airplane must be RTF.

The airplane should have a maximum cost of $200, but I can pay more, depending on the above constraints.

If you guys have any more questions, please ask. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
One thing you might want to look into is the current ban on "autonomous" flight. You can find the guidelines at www.modelaircraft.org For the kind of money and performance you have in mind, the fuel airplanes with a .15-.25 motor will give the endurance and payload requirements most easily. To reach these abilities with the current electric technology is "doable" but expensive, and tough for someone just getting in. Shop around the larger discount outfits like www.towerhobbies.com for the model, equipment, and an economical 4-channel radio. Pretty much all of the R/C sets wotrk fine, it is mostly a matter of shopping features and price.
Good luck, Dave

Bummer..no autonomous flight. Thanks for all the tips, anyway. For just having fun, I think I'll get an electric one. Thanks anyway!
