View Full Version : Hammer Paint
I am starting this thread because I wanted to see what kind of paint everyone was using on there boats. I really want to do a fancy paint job on my boat but don't know how hard it would be. I really want to do a paint job kind of like this one, so what do you all use for paint and can this paint job be done on the little nitro hammer.

As for paint, I used Model Masters color with MonoKote clear. As for that paint job.... Anything can be done with time, paitence and skill

MICHO523 IS RIGHT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. I PERSONALLY USE CREATEX AUTO PAINT(ENAMEL) AND HAVE USED MANY DIFFERENT CLEAR COATS. ALL WITH ABOUT THE SAME RESULTS. THAT PAINT IN THE PIC IS COOL  ,
YOU WILL NEED ALL THE PAINTS FOR THE COLOR SCHEME, AIRBRUSH, COMPRESSOR, & TONS OF ACURRATE DETAILED MASKING!! GOOD LUCK! :)
I want to do it in the next couple of weeks and will post some pics when I get it done. All my factory decals are falling off and makes my boat look cheap. Wish me luck

I like to use Duplicolor, it shoots well and there are quite a few options. airbrushing is your best option for that scheme. you'll have to layer that scheme on. I like to wet sand between each coat when I want a really clean job but if you shoot it with an airbrush it should be fine enough not to have to worry about. Like was mentioned before use good masking tape. I use the blue tape from an auto paints store. That will be crucial because regular masking won't leave you a clean line. Also I would clear it in with a good automotive clear to protect all your hard work. Seen many a nice paint job go tank due to nitro or gas because it (the paint)wasn't gas resistant. after you clear wet sand it down to remove any orange peel, compound it out then buff it out. I like to use meguires (I think its called scratch X) stuff works great to remove any left over fine swirls. Then wax it down. Taking your time will be the key no matter what you paint.
Let us know how its going and show us some pics of while you do it if you can.
My dad has a friend who does car touch up for a living. He has all the different color paints I want. He is coming over tonight so I am going to get the paint tonight. I may also try to do the base coat of white. I will be shur to sand between every coat. What Color should I start with?

I would do the base, then the light purple, the blue accents and finally the red. like I said I'm no expert but shot fine enough through a touch up gun you may need to do no sanding. My friend who i'm learning to shoot motorcycle graphics with likes to use water colors and then clear them in to protect them. he says the water colors are easier to shoot, go on thinner and are easier on clean up. Haven't tried it yet but that is mainly shooting ghost type graphics. can we say flames on my .21 mono ! :D

lovinnitro- IS RIGHT, TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO IT RIGHT IF YOUR GOING TO DO IT ALL. I PERSONALLY USE PAINTS THAT CAN BE WATERED DOWN SO THAT THEY SPRAY THIN AND EVEN. ( BUT I HAVE BEEN AIRBRUSHING FOR 12YRS ) I THINK THAT MAYBE YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER LOOKING INTO MASKING PUTTY. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT AT YOUR LHS, IT ALLOWS YOU TO PAINT ON MASKING AND THEN CLEAN OFF WHEN DONE!!! THIS IS REALLY COOL WHEN DOING FLUID GRAFIX!
FLAMES, DROPS, SMEARS, ALMOST LIKE THE PIC YOU HAD. YOU WILL HAVE TO LAYER.
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE FINISHED PRODUCT

hey, don't knock the snorkle!!! i tried that on my 1st hammer using an exhaust diverter from a plane. it worked too!
This is for the carb. It works kindof like a cold air intake. The hammer would always richen up real bad when I put the top on.(sucking hot air) I haven't really tried this but I hope it helps something.
Hey I made some checkers last night with the colors I'm going to use. Too dark????????????????? I didn't wait long enough to let the grey dry so thats why it pealed off in some spots.

That's probably going to be too hard to see on the water. Maybe a lighter grey or even a white base.
If the grey and black won't work, what about the grey and a red? BRIGHT RED!!!!!!!!

Much better, but if you want to make it really stand out, maybe use yellow highlighting or possibly silver stripes and/or letters. The colors are up to you, just MAKE SURE THE PAINT JOB SCREAMS "I'M HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Besides, a flashy paint job gets your boat noticed :D

That should work. As long as it has some bright colors, it should be fine
I got the primer and color today. I had to do a little fiberglass work to the hatch. I droped it and took out a little chunk of gel coat. I got the dupli-color gun metal. I want to at least primer the hatch.

So, what's the final color scheme?
Well, I guess you'll just have to see it when its done. I think it will look pretty cool if it turns out.

If i'm lucky enough, I might see it in person this spring.
Yep, Did you get the pm I sent you last night. What is your email adress. We can keep in touch that way.
I shot the primer today and it came out great. Hope the paint comes out this good.
Look. I got the hatch painted with no runs or dust bunnies. Heres a pic. :)

Looks good. Let it dry for a day or two before you go to the next color. That will prevent the peeling you saw on the test shoot.
OOP's Too late. I did the second paint already and it turned out fine. Heres a pic of a little more that I did. :)
