After seeing all the PHAT paint jobs at the ODMBA races I just had to do it! I decieded to go with a semi-gloss white base coat and original Prather graphics.

Dana, what brand of primer are you using? I've never done any paint work but figured on one of my boats, I could at least get it wet sanded and primed before sending it off to the shop. You know how it is with us (local exchange) they stock basic stuff... ie, Krylon but they say its the automotive type.

Oh you mean Dalma :D .

Don't laugh but I went to dollar general and got one can of primer ($2.00) and two cans of white paint ($1.00) each.

I usually use DupliColor though. It's kinda expensive put it does the job and is fuel prof when dry.

Hey Trakin,
Which Duplicolr are you using. I found out the hard way that the mirage paint is DEFINATELY not fuel proof  That one hurt, but after refinishing and protecting with a good clear it makes an awsome paint.
I like Duplicolor as well if I'm shooting from a can that's what I used to do my gas boat.

Hey Trakin,
Which Duplicolr are you using.

Their engine Enamel, heat proof, fuel proof, chip proof, scratch proof etc etc.

Wet sanded the G down & got a coat of primer on it.

Now I know why I hate painting. It was running after a few minutes. Then it started spraying splatter all over so I cleaned the nozzel with acetone, sprayed a little more, then it started again...

More wet sanding to do next weekend.

How many coats of primer do you normally put? After sanding this, I'm wondering if it will need another coat before hitting with the color?

One more thing... When I spray the color, do you guys like to wetsand that coat and then spray one more?

Boy, theres going to be some runs in the final for sure, but buffing by hand with a good polish should help it right?

Take your time man. just my opinion but I prefer a few thinner coats than one heavy one. Less chance of sag plus in gives the new coat a little something to stick to. What I try to do, but as you know I'm no pro, is on my final coat just to a point where it gets smooth. If done right you get minimal orange peel and if lucky(which doesn't always happen no runs or sags.
Are you shaking the can really really good before you start to shoot? also do it almost constantly while you shoot. I think from a can the little sputters and splatters are almost unavoidable but making sure the the paint is well mixed helps.
I'd do two coats of primer depending on how thick the coats are.
If you want a really smooth finish I would sand with 1500 or 2000 grit paper between coats but it's not necessary. I sand the final coat with 2000 and I like to clear mine in to protect the paint then sand untill theres no orange peel left. Just make sure you don't sand through your color coat.
Meguires scratch X is some killer stuff to remove any swirls from sanding, then wax.
Hope this helps man. And for the love of God man post us some pics! :D
Hey Trakin does their engine paint come in the variety that their other stuff comes in??
