View Full Version : Two ESC's instead of the EVX? Setup help needed...

Hey all,
I'm thinking of picking up an electric monster. The E-Maxx doesn't turn me on so I'm looking at the Twin Force by Kyosho. I don't want an EVX so I have a question:
Can I run a pair of Novak Explorer II's(one for each motor and battery pack) to get the same performance as 1 EVX? I ask because I already have 1 explorer on hand and another would be pretty cheap. I also heard the EVX is prone to failure and I'm not messing with constant returns or rebuys. I like the Explorer II so if I could run a "Y" connector to get the signal from the RX to both ESC's at the same time could I just run each battery pack/motor on it's own ESC?
Thanks for any and all setup help....

it would work but the performance idont know

You might want to only split the white wire, if you also split the red and black you will have 12v coming into the reciever instead of the normal 6.

I've had the EVX for a year and a half now without problems. The only problem I see with your setup is that with the motors in parallel and the batteries in series (like the EVX), each motor gets 14.4V, but with 2 seperate circuits, you only get 7.2v/motor. This would significantly reduce your power.
Also, if you split the red and black in the correct way (parallel, rather than series), you would get more current capability and still only have 6v. This would improve your servo action significantly.

truely if you really want performance, and willing to spend a lil money, forget normal brushed motors and go brushless. best part about it is you only need 1 motor since the 1 motor has soo much powre alone. Even the novak one should be good enough i think.
The performance wise with your set up will be the same as running 1 explorer with one motor, but you will get twice the torque tho.
compared to an evx set up, you wont have the rpm it achieves.

I think I found my solution:

Super duty, baby.....Super Duty
Brushless looks good but the cost is a bit crazy right now. Even the Novak HV-Maxx is $300 and the Hacker c50 and controller top out at around $500.....

yes you can run twin ESC's using a regular servo Y-lead. dont switch on both of them as the BEC current(not the voltage) doubles up and could fry your receiver - some people recommend cutting the red wire on the lead that goes to the Rx on one of the ESC's - but ot me thats unecessary and would cause probs if you ever want to use them seperatley. (it may take you by suprise but when u switch on one they both spring to life as its the receiver that has been switched on, not the ESC itself.)
However - the performance will be very sluggish compared to an EVX. for the simple reason that each motor will only have 7.2v going to it and the 550's in the twin need 12v or more to get them flying - the EVX takes two packs but runs them in series for 14.4v power, so to get it running fast you need to get either an EVX or an Mtroniks super E truck ESC - or that new super duty XR by novak whenever it gets released.....
if you swapped out the motors to something that runs well on 7.2v however - like a good pair of 17-19t motors you should get reasonable performance....its worked for clods for years.....

I have an idea. You can use your seperate ESC idea, but instead of using stock 550 kyosho motors, you can use 2 of these motors: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEXU3&P=7
I've heard of boat guys using them on 8 cells only with very decent performance.

well if you don't want to use the EVX then get a Super Rooster (or the new super duty when it gets released) and run 2 of whatever standard 540's you want on a single 6 cell. I'd say a Super rooster and a couple 15t's would be a good fast setup or the SR and 2 Kyosho Magentic Mayhams would be great for all out torque. I'm running a super rooster with 2 14t motors on my clod and with a good 3300 run time is still decent.

Can u use the EVX 14 cells to a single 540 on a touring car?

Sure. For all of 30 seconds before you fry the motor. The problem is that the 540 is not designed to handle that many cells, so it will just overheat.
