What type of Hop-Ups should I do on this car? What is going to break on this car? Anything would be helpful.

Hey MrSubaru - I have a Tamiya PreRunner which is essentially the same truck. I would add bearings as a start. If you want to see the hop-ups I added, check my profile for a link.

RichieRich,
I can add those to my S-10? That stock shaft is very weak!

Make sure you set that rear ball diff right. What do you mean by that?

Yeah, the stock shaft can be replaced with the hardened prop shaft. It really is much beefier. There are two versions, make sure you get the shorter one.

Is this truck pretty light?
WDGuy
02-16-2005, 05:55 PM
the truck is very light, I love mine. I put my 12T Speed Gems in it and it was insane, I locked my rear diff and it is unstoppable. I am going to get some longer arms for it so I can run 2.2 swamp dawgs on it.
MrSubaru

what part is that for the rear lock?
jasonw
02-21-2005, 12:24 PM
I would not say this is a light truck. Bone stock mine is heavyer than my nitro buggy but its nice to have a little weight while crawling to help push the tires into the rocks. To lock the rear diff there is no part, I just removed most of the washers and tourqed the diff down as tight as I could but bewere its a ball diff and doing like me you will most likly to irrepoutable damage to the diff.

hey,i've had two of those over the years, and i still have one. bearings are a must have. the aluminum motor mount is a good choice. pinion gear sets, and universals, plus all of the above are all i've ever had on mine. only breakage has been rear shock towers, and rear top gear cover, from over-tightening screws. i've even converted one to a touring car by putting 10mm spacers under the shock pistons, and switching to tc sized springs, wheels and tires. i really wish that someone made a tire to fit it that was a bit softer. stock ones are like rocks, but they do wear well. oh, i also used a dremel to mill out the battery slot to accept side by side packs. that was probably one of the best mods. you also dont need the upgrade center driveshaft. simply replace the black plastic cups on the ends with fuel tubing. quiets it down, and shaft runs truer. how's this for a start? :D

I just got a roller and have another one on the way I plan on rebuilding them as I have always wanted one. I run onroad now but plan on using this for my at home fix on race days! first I am going to get some bearings and am interested in the sturdier drive shaft as it seems pretty flimsy. Not sure about the body as the one I have is pretty beat and the other roller does not have one. Any ideas on a truck body for this! Or the cheapest place to get another stock body? Thanks Gene

I have a tamiya M1025 hummer. I took the rear ball diff. and It fits just right up in the front. Then I took the front gear diff and filled it with epoxy to make a locked diff.

I've had about 3 of the s-10's and 5 of the f-150's (same truck, different body and front bumper). The aluminum motor mount and hd prop shaft are nice to have but not really for would ebay commands for them these days.... ridiculous. I also widetracked one with the blazing star arms and dogbones and it was 100% more stable, but it ruins the scale look. They are tippy turning at speed (understatement of the year). They are hella fun though and I've been thinking about buying another while they still have them. I would imagine the kits days are numbered. Tamiya USA already is out of some of the parts as they are phasing them out (so I was told by them).

guys, one quick question. how come they equiped this truck with a ball diff. at the rear? you have to forgive me, all im familiar of is "monster truck" and a total noob with touring/racing cars.
so, whats the difference of the ball diff to the gear diff? thank you for any input guys.
microrcdude
06-04-2005, 11:45 PM
Ball diffs are less friction, but gear diffs are more durable, so it makes since to put a gear up front to handle more stress.

thank you microdude. it makes more sense why they put gear at front and ball at the rear.
But, aside from the durability issue, how about handling? does having a ball diff (on any car for that matter) have any advantage from the gear diff? thank you.

I have two! Heh, only have pictures of one since I was looking to sell only this one but I have one with the standard body on it as well. Their scale looks are just about unbeatable and so much fun to watch in the dirt. I just don't have th e time for them anymore.

I agree that the widening kit is a fantastic mod for these trucks. I think I still have the article detailing how to make the changes, if anyone needs it.
Not only does widening the truck make it much more stable, it allows you to run much larger tires. I know that ruins the scale look, but I've been really impressed with what these little trucks can do. I've widened my truck, added the hardened prop shaft, and tried many different tires. I mostly run the 2.2" Mashers. I made some snow chains that work way better than I thought they would. Bearings and an esc are almost a necessity. I've also added 4" E/T Maxx shocks that give a lot more travel.
If anyone's interested, I have some pictures at http://photos.yahoo.com/timba28.
