Hey peeps!
Been lurking for awhile now and finally joined, seems there's alot of good advice to be had here. Glad to see the r/c community is thriving in spite of our lousy economy. I was wondering if any of you may remember Kyosho's super scale series of cars. These were electric, shaft-driven 4wds made in the late '80's, early '90's, larger than 1/10th but not quite 1/8th scale, something like HPI's super nitro's. I'm trying to restore a diablo, but cannot find info anywhere-even Kyosho's site for discontinued kits mentions nothing about these cars! I'm beginning to think they only made one, randomly shipped it off to a hobby store in Denver, and miraculously I walked in and bought it right after it was placed on the shelf.
Any of you "old-timers" out there know anything about this car?

I think I have some info. I'll have to check my "R/C library" at home. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Thanks R.R.! It's an interesting design that I'd like to get back on the road, so anything will help!

From memory Kyosho made a Countach and an F40, both electric with possible 4WD train.
At that time, tracks were 200mm and wheelbase 275mm ... ie same than their off-road counterparts ...

The Diablo is a more recent car you know ...

I'll try to get my camera back and post some pics, maybe that will help.....

There was an XJ-220 electric shaft-drive, and I thought the Lambo was a Diablo, not a Countach. I can check my stash (95% complete from April '9 though 2003) this weekend.

Kyosho did have a series of 2WD cars based on the Ultima platform, and they came with all kinds of bodies: Porsche 911, Nissan 300Z, Countach, Testarosa, F40, even a low-rider S-10 pickup. I'm pretty sure they were regular buggy width.

There were also a couple bigger F1 cars, both electric and nitro.

Yeah, from the timeperiod you mention, I can only find information relating to Kyosho's Scale Series. These had highly detailed bodies and a chassis based on the Ultima. There is no diablo. I think pictures would really help out :)

Thanks for all the ideas, guys! Sorry about the delay with the pictures, I've loaned my digital to a friend who won't be back from his trip until this weekend. I can clarify the diablo/countach debate though, as I have part of the box top, (I've also got the front page of the instrux---why the previous owner didn't keep the entire manual I'll never know!) which while in very bad shape clearly shows the car with a diablo body and wheels. The body does look like a diablo to me but when I can finally get pics up I'll let you guys decide. Check back this weekend!
Thanks again!

No, the Diablo was a separate car. It was the Diablo and Jaguar XJ220 on their own 4WD chassis. I think they were bigger than current TCs, but I don't know if they were as big as current Super Size cars.

Steve, do you have pictures?

I have the flat nose 911 one. It's just a ultima with a big hard 911 body on it. I'm in the process of rebuilding it with all the parts from one of my Ultima Pro XL cars I raced for years. But the rims are very large and I don't have any tires other than the ones that came with the car. And they won't last that long they way I drive! Didn't Kyosho also make a few cars that were Turbo Optima Mid SE's converted to on-road with the Graphite chassis? I remember seeing one on Ebay but it went for $400 or something crazy like that.

If I recall correctly, there were two Optima-based on-road 4WDs. One was a dirt-oval car, and the other was a Luminum stock car. I don't think there were any others, but I could be wrong (Highly unlikely, though).

I'll be cleaning the workshop this weekend, and I will see if I can find the issues with them in it.

The cars that I've seen on the internet all came from England. So maybe we never got them in the states. I remember the dirt oval car. It was called the Slingshot. I have 2 Mid SE cars and I'm thinking of turning one into a turing car just for fun.

Well, it was going to be, but apparently I've used the max amount of upload space I can. Anyone know a better way to do this? The current setup is wonky as hell...

I've got close-ups of the various chassis parts, so let me know and I'll post them. Does this look like an Ultima chassis? I dont know if you can tell in the pics but the chassis length is adjustable by moving the "motor pod" in or out, then adjusting the shaft to match. Different, eh?

Definitely not an Ultima chassis. I found this picture of the XJ220 on a google cache.

That's not the Ultima one. I do remember that car in advertisements back in the day. But unfortunately I trashed all my RCA magazines 2 years ago when I moved out because I never looked at the ones that old.
