I'm throwing a mamba 8000 in right away so it'll be a double edged review.....of the stock parts that don't survive and how quick it was while it was running with the mamba :D

I've got one on order straight from Great Planes Distributor (gotta love workin for the LHS), and I'm gonna order a set of LiPos, a AstroFlight 109, and a Mamba 8000.
For now I'm working on my brushless RC10T4. :D

If you go here http://www.teamassociated.com/shusting/CatalogHub/cathub_offroad.htm
there's the exploded views and full manual in pdf format.I'm not liking the spring loaded dogbone retainers with an open slot on the axle.I'm worried that the dogbone will torque out of the axle during hard acceleration. Also need to get aluminum cvd's ASAP and carbide diff balls maybe more to make it reliable with that much juice.I've got some 3cell lipolys I'm hoping will fit and I just made up an 8 cell 1100 pack (hopefully it'll fit) in preparation for it's arrival.

I'm looking real hard at one of these things as something to mess with when it's just too cold outside to run my MGT. I'm looking forward to seeing what some of you guys that have them on order thing about them. I'd also be interested in knowing what people think of the lipo's they're getting. I'd be interested in them simply for the additional runtime, so yall let us know what's going on with those too. I'm not quite ready to talk about doubling the amount of money I've spent on the truck to go to brushless yet, but I may do that when the stock motor starts to wear out or something. Anyhow - looking forward to the reviews.

Got mine today...Thing is pretty quick, faster than a mini T. Seems to glitch quite a bit but it is still drivable. Anyhow, the value of this thing is pretty good, bearings, ball diffs, oil shocks for just a fraction more than a Mini T. Kudos to associated, also the drivetrain and diffs are very smooth from the box. Now need more power......

So while driving in my basement I broke a front shock shaft in a minor altercation. Here is a better assesment and recomended upgrades for the little guy.
1. Wider front bumper, with the front shocks ends being exposed and the chassis having the hinge pins molded in, you need to protect the front end better, or risk an expensive repair.
2. Factory team shocks, the stock shocks are ok, but mine leaked and the plastic bodies seem kinda fragile, but then again I am used to 1/8 scale nitro cars.
3. CVDs, the plastic ones will work for a awhile but are a week point. These will eventually break.
4. Stiffer chassis: The Stock chassis is very flexible, to flexible for my taste. It has the front and rear hinge pin braces molded into it as well as a slight kickup up in the front end. A carbon fibre chassis, coupled with some aluminum hinge pin blocks would be a fantastic upgrade. I am not sure how the aftermarket is going to pull this off without it costing an arm and leg.
5. Carbide balls in the diff. No explanation needed.
6. Heatsink motor mount; runs a little hot, ok runs alot hot.
7. New front servo, The Hitec servo will not fit in the stock chassis without mod work, so I hope the aftermarket guys can turn out something quick cause I do not want to cobble up my new truck.
All and all the little truck is great out of the box, the drivetrain runs smooth, the stock shocks work pretty good, and has plenty get up and go.
John
I picked mine up from my LHS this morning (I am in the UK). With the stock electrics, it's quite fast, certainly faster than a stock Mini-T.
It's a shame the included battery charger is only 140mA output though, as that will take several hours to fully charge the battery each time. The manual calls it a 10-hour charger, and recommends that you charge the battery for that long before using it for the first time. My battery had power straight from the box though.
I've now changed the receiver over to a Hi-Tec 40MHz, so I can use my CRX radio with it, and put a Mamba 6800 brushless system in it. It's a bit of a handful now, probably a little quicker than my Mini-T was with the same system in it (mid 20's mph maybe). One good thing is that the front end stays down a lot better than the Mini-T, so it doesn't just wheely when the power is on.
But the rapidly approaching darkness, and a high speed cartwheel on concrete (which resulted in a 'clicking' coming from the transmission) brought things to a close. I think the pinion/spur mesh just needs adjusting.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this little truck. The best thing is that you don't need to buy anything extra to get up and running (except 8 AA's for the radio), it is well-specced, and the out-of-the-box performance is surprisingly good.

Very nice. Mine came from Tower today, and I'm impressed with it. Very high quality piece, and nice and quick, stock out of the box. I did a little run with it in the dirt, and I also have a clicking from the transmission after a roll. I did some investigation and found that the spur has had a tooth or 2 deformed, and that's what's causing it. It didnt' do that before the roll, but it's there after, maybe there's some flex that can change the mesh enough to damage the spur in a roll. Dunno for sure, but it wasn't that way before. The truck still runs and drives fine, just has a clicking sound. Tower wants me to order 4 spurs if I backorder one, so I'm going to call AE on Monday to see what they can do for me.
I'm happy with the truck, it's a nice little piece.

I was looking around Tower for some carbide balls, and it said minimum quanity needed to order was 2. How many do I need to put in the truck? Basically, how many do I need to order? Heres a link(no info or picture, though  ) Carbide Diff Balls (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJHS3) Also, will all the standard Mini-T wheels/tires work with this truck? What about the bodies?(dont think so on that one) One more question...is this the right CVD kit to get for it? Its the Associated MIP CVD Axles RC18T (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJHW8&P=7) on Tower Hobbies.

11-28-2004, 12:37 AM
Don't exactly know about the Diff Balls (sorry), but as for the Mini-T Wheels/Tires, you will have to run rear Mini-T Wheels all the way around, and they will work. As for the bodies, I think a majority of them will fit with the adjustable body posts. The CVD kit I do believe is correct, you will more than likely have to order 2 kits, they usualy come 2 in a package.
thunderbt3
11-28-2004, 01:04 AM
Yes, the CVD's come in pairs according to the manual, you will have to order 2 sets
For carbide diff balls, my ntc3's diff balls measure 3/32 which is equal to 2.38mm
The manual says the diff balls in there are 2.0mm, i dunno if they'll work or not

I got mine the otherday its been fun so far but have only ran it once. Only problem i have had is that I could not get my Futaba 2PL to work with it. It was glitching big time. Im unsure why at this time. Tryed 2 @PL radios 3 recievers and 2 sets of crystals with all the same results. Worked fine with 2PC. Problem was it SOMTIMES would take off when you turned to right and brake with left but the channels were not swaped.

it is sweet, but i never saw a mini-t in person. mine came with the blue body, and yes, the body holes were a bit tight, but they will loosen with time. haven't even run the thing, but it sure looks cool, smaller than i thought it would be. already bolted on some RPM chrome Bullys mounted on losi street treads, looks wicked, better than the stock white dish rims.

IF I do get an RC18T..I will probably want a lipo/mamba system...IF i do go with that, what battery configuration will best fit the RC18T? Either the "Series" or the "Parallel". The link to these batteries is here: CheapBatteryPacks.com Lipos (http://www.unipros.com/cbpsite/customlipo.asp?session_id=220296) Also, what gauge wire would be appropriate in this application? And the right plug to go with would be the Dean's Ultra, correct? If I did go with Dean's what other plugs would I have to change, other than the ESC and charger? Sorry for so many questions and thanks for the help.

Trash the 27MHz system. I've got my Futaba 75MHz setup on it now, no glitch problems at all.
Here's a pic of my spankin' new rc18t with some RPM chrome bullys mounted on Losi street treads. This little truck rocks. faster than i thought it would be out of the box, and the stock electronics are nice and small, unlike the mini-t and itsy bitsy spyder. Great truck out of the box.

you should get the rc18t, it's four wheel drive, and has real shocks out of the box as opposed to the friction shocks you get with the mini-t. the rc18t is plenty fast out of the box, too fast to run around the house, and can be made faster with hotter motors and better battery pack.

As far as I know, they brakes on the stock ESC suck, the XRS brakes work a little better though.
i just called Associated to ask them how to increase the brakes, they said nothing can be done other than turning off the reverse, which i don't want to do. oh well, minor flaw. gotta get used to that scary second or two where the car just floats in neutral after 'braking'.
still a great truck. surprised at how fast the thing is out of the box.

I was at my LHS, and a stock RC18T took on a BL Mini-t. The RC18T was keeping up in the straights, but when the infield and jumps came, the mini-t was gone. I am amaized at how stable this truck is. Ive seen people TRY to flip it, lol.
I just got my RC18T before leaving for the job. I'm so excited that I bring it to the job and now I'm charging the battrey pack....:)
This little truck is really ffffaaaaaassssssstttttttt !!!!!!
What's the biggest wheel/tire I can put on this truck ?
I found some big wheels for my RC18T :)
Some RC10GT Rear wheels (3/16") but they fit the 3mm axle with few modifications. I ran the truck with the stock gearing few second but motor was getting really hot. I'll install a 10T pinion with a 60T spur...

Yes a raised boby but tires are too wide. I can't get much steering ! I'll try rear buggy tires they are less wide than truck tires. But first of all, I need to chabge gear ratio !!!

Rear buggy tires are .3" narrower than stadium tires that should give more steering. They are also .8" smaller

I went to the track yesterday only to find out we weren't running nitro because it was supposed to rain. I was going to go home and ... well I didn't know, but instead I went home, got my M18 and went back to run indoors.
Another racer showed up, and you can guess what he had, the RC18T. I got to drive it for about 2 charges, and this little truck rocks! I was really impressed, its super fast and handles really well. I think stock shocks and springs are a little weak, but thats really my only complaint. Its really well built, and I'll be buying one this week. $160 bucks... nice.
On one hand I don't want it to be RTR, just another crap AM radio to throw in the garage, but at that price... If it were a kit for 100 bucks, I'd need an FM receiver, probably 50 bucks, ESC, Battery, mini servo... Shoot we're back up to like 250!!. I really can't believe how much you get for the price, seems the electrics alone are worth 160!
Stock radio is not that bad, the controller is the same as shippied with RC10GT RTR and Nitro TC3 RTR. It's a good AM radio. I had it for long time with my RC10GT. Of course it's just an AM :)
Maybe Associated will come out with a Team edition with all the FT included. But as you said, for 160$ who can ask for anything more !
The only weak point I noticed is the shock retainers, they always fall out but it's easy to modify. I didn't have oportunity to run the truck outside (10 inches of snow), I'll have to wait few months :( I'd like to see this little truck on gravel and dirt, this should rock ! I plan to convert mine into a 1/18 monster truck.
Thanks AE for your really good job, it's my fourth AE and once again, I'm very satisfied !

One of the guys at the LHS just ran his today for the first time. I was very impressed. He used all the provided spacers for the suspension and it was still a little soft. But then again, I have been used to driving a T Maxx.
The only problem I noticed was with that clicking sound from the Spur gear (I'm guessing the mesh was off). Is this a common problem for everyone? Has anyone been able to adjust it so that it stops?
Just curious?
MikeDawg50
12-11-2004, 03:31 AM
Correct me if I am wrong but adding the spacers will only raise the ride height... not really stiffen the suspension. Try the gold springs from Associated part number 21199 for the front and 21203 for ther rear if you buy one and need stiffer suspension. :) Oh and yes some others have had issues with the clicking sound. Somthing with the mesh being off because of the truck flexing a little or for just a second and spur will get a little messed up. I haven't had that problem yet but he is not the only one with that issue.
Good Luck!

Investigation of the clicking sound with my truck revealed that it was the diff ring spinning, the ring has a D shaped cutout to key it to the outdrive, and the clicking noise was the ring spinning and rounding off the corrisponding D on the outdrive.
It sounded exactly like the gears were skipping though, shimming the gear mesh didn't fix the noise, but gluing the diff ring with CA on the long outdrive did.

I posted this question on another forum, but it doesn't seem that anybody there has any info to help. I have to wait until Christmas to open my 18T, but I ordered up an Airtronics 94091 Super Micro Servo, and the matching servo saver. I understand that it's a direct fit...which is why I jumped on buying it. But what I don't know is...how much of an improvement is the Airtronics in torque and speed compared to the stock one. I found the Airtronics stats on the product website, but I can't find any stats for the stock servo. I mean, did the torque only increase by a couple oz's...or did it double the oz's? Is it faster, slower, etc?

What are you guys running for shocks? I'm runningthese (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX2792&P=7) They are the shocks from Team associated for the 1/12 car. And there is like 8 different types of springs you can get for them.

I bought a 18T for christmas, charged the battery way before hand, and it was a blast, the whole family was having fun. My wife drove it more than I did (crashed it). I am wondering how long to charge the battery? 1st time is 10hrs, but what about afterwards? I charged it for a few hours and according to my multimeter, it is registering 8.02 volts. Any ideas anyone?
This little thing is fun!
Is there a way to tune it down for the kids?

Anyone have problems running theirs in dirt? We bought three, and all of them got jammed up in no time.
Can you purchase a gear/pinion cover? I got pebbles wedged in their every run. Now my gears make funny sounds sometimes.
They are meant to be driven in the diry aye? www.rc10.com has a video of theirs in the dirt and the box has dirt so ....what gives?>???

Yes the rocks get in the gears way to easy. My sons make noise now. He has lost both shock holders also. These definately need to be super glued in. I did manage to just turn down the ATV on the high side to slow my sons down. Its noticably slower than mine. I guess its time for me to get some hopups and have the extra parts from my truck for his.

i just called Associated to ask them how to increase the brakes, they said nothing can be done other than turning off the reverse, which i don't want to do. oh well, minor flaw. gotta get used to that scary second or two where the car just floats in neutral after 'braking'.
still a great truck. surprised at how fast the thing is out of the box.

I've tried it and know for certain that turning off reverse makes no noticeable change in the brakes that aren't.
Proably read this before but I'll reiterate the response from Team AE's QA board
"The brakes on the rc18t are more like an anti-lock braking system that slows but doesn't actually stop the car."
Total BS in my mind but since I went to a mamba right away it's not something I'm going to push.Otherwise I'd be asking for a partial refund on mine being as there's a total lack of brakes even though they're advertised as existing.A little tired as well of being sold shoddy crap as hobby grade and being forced to buy yet another toy radio system I don't need or want. But that's another rant for another day ;)

Fanke,
I had the same problem, except both of mine had popped out. Quite a few times! I was able to solve the problem though. I obviously lost both of the springs that provide tension to the Dog Bone, so I broke out the old click pens and started to cut my own. By the way you don't need to take apart the hub, you only have to pop off the upper ball joint and the wheel will flop out so you can just pop back in the Dog Bone.
Anyway, onto my fix: Take the spring and wrap it around the end of the dog bone so part of the spring is wrapped around it and the other part is pointing in the same directions as the dog bone(you want it to look like there is a spring popping out the end). Then cut the spring down so that it is as long as needed to provide tension. Probably about as long as a pencil eraser will work fine.
I now am able to jump the heck out of this thing and it hasn't popped out yet.
I will try to post a picture if anyone else is interested
Good luck

MAke some collars to fit over the outdrives out of some shrink tube or whatever you have laying around(I used a ball point pen barrel) and that should stop the outdrives from spreading and losing your dogbones.MAke it small enough and just snug enough (might have to use a small round file to enlarge the inside diameter if you use hard tubing) so it keeps the ring next to the diff side of the outdrive and won't slide off onto the dogbone.I did that a couple weeks ago and have cartwheeled it on asphalt at 35 and haven't lost one since

So I bought an RC18T today at the track.. and on my second run I cased a big double with it and the car just stoped. Nothing worked. So as im walkin out to retreive my car, i notice a HUGE white ploom of SMOKE coming out from under the body. As i got to the car i was frantically trying to pull the body off to shut it off and I see red flame inside the body.
Turns out one of the wires on the Battery touched somewhere inside it. The battery has one wire that runs the entire lenght of the pack, and that wire was TOASTED. Every bit of insulation was GONE from it ans it seared off the heatsrink around it. Totally melted the ESC plug too.
But I exchanged the car for another one and heres hoping it wont explode too :-X

dragracer28

I dont think you need to change the gearing I put a Orion Baja motor in until I get a better one and it is a huge difference. I would say on flat ground it is almost as fast as my T3 with a 19 turn. If you will run it on dirt though I would change the gearing it spins the tires a little if you nail it.

That raises a good point...I put deans on my packs and I put the female end on the pack for that exact reason... I didn't see any markings for which side should be positive, or which end should be male/female... which raises the issue that even if a buddy is running deans, be real careful before trying his gear on your ride...

Rotary Rocket

dub-c, can you be more specific?
If you are talking about the motor, then it is a modified heak sink.
On top of the receiver is a piece of lexan with the antenna wrapped through it.
On top of the steering servo is the controller.
I have another picture (from the opposite side) posted in this thread that might help: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=184779&page=2&pp=25

Oh, it's the lexan w/ the wire wrapped through it. It looked really weird in the pic on this thread. The other pic cleared it up, thanks. Is that so the tube doesn't keep breaking when you flip?
Rotary Rocket
01-04-2005, 11:54 PM
Exactly. This way the wire stays inside the body, it looks cleaner outside and you never damage your receiver wire.
I always save the excess lexan from new bodies to make internal antennas.

Does the mini-T "big block" motor fit on the rc18t? YES
Do you have a problem with the backplate on the stock motor coming loose and want to come off? NO just tighten the screws very well.
What is the best hop up motor thats not the mamba motor? The Raptor from one18th Dot com.
And before you ask the best esc for the rc18t is the novak spy if your going to upgrade the motor the next thing you will look at is the esc. then you'll want to go FM to get away from the stock AE am glitchin' issues.

No not at this time....I don't know if the ESC will support dual pack but I'll have to wait until spring to test the top speed, it's winter here :(
ducati777
01-31-2005, 03:50 PM
@slaf, stock esc can handle 1 pack, just run 2 packs in paralelle.... wazzat, a 6s2p setup. Still 7.2 volts but double capacity, to offset your double motors.... ESC should be fine.
(should)

an incorrect gear mesh could definitly do that. if you loosen the motor screws and adjust it so that the spur can wiggle just a little inside the teeth of the pinion.

Hey guys, this is a major race discovery!
My steps to make a tire like new, even sticky like new!
1) Take a spare rag.
2)Get a bar of cheap soap
3) Get an old bottle of shampoo, etc.
4)put the tires in a closed bin, Rubbermaid with a top
5)put some water in the container
6)Grab one tire, put the soap on the rag, and scrub the tire
7)wash the soap and dirt off in the bin
8)If there is too much dirt, dump the water
9)put the shampoo on the surface of the tire, and scrub it against your hand or the bottom of the container
10)wash the shampoo off
11)take the tires out of the bin and put them on a dry towel to dry
12)put the tires on your car
No, I didn't copy this from somewhere. I just did that in my sink... You can also do it like that.

^^^ Banned. Bwahahah!!!
But as far as the spring retainers, this is a known weakness on the truck. I highly recommend all of you glue these to the cup they rest on. Once glued, its pretty solid, and if you need to get it back off, the glue can usually be broken by hand without damaging the shock.

I don't know about this truck anymore. I saw the new Kyosho Mini 777. I want that instead of this truck. I know it has friction shocks and the combo ESC/Receiver unit but i still want it cause i love 1/8 scale buggies but cant afford this so I figure ill get this Mini 1/8 scale buggy.
ducati777
02-14-2005, 01:41 PM
That Mini 777 does look pretty cool.... but don't sweat the shock thing, heck I upgraded my shocks friction or not on the RC18T. The ESC/Receiver idea is too bad, they'd be better off to just offer a kit instead.

ya. i agree. it would be fun to build. i would rather get a kit over a RTR anyday but so far only a few mini's come in kits. i like this truck and the mini 777. i would buy both if i had the money. my cous. just bought a rc18t and the little truck rips but he was having probs with keeping the spring in place that holds the dogbones in. hes only 8 years old though so i had to teach him how to drive it well enough not to swerve off the street.

Does anyone know where to go to figure out Gear Ratios?
I want to upgrade the motor. But I want to know what pinion / Spur Combo to use and if the Stock ESC can handle different motors / Gear Ratios.
I am not mathmatically inclined. But I can make a mean burger.
Thanx In Advance!!!

We can help you here... I forget the final drive ratio on the RC18T, I'm sure someone knows.... However in my opinion the RC18T is geared way too high. I'd recommend running about the lowest ratio you can find in just about every application...
Like if you wanted to go with a speed 300 sized motor, they love low ratios. I'd throw the 60 tooth spur on it, and the lowest pinion you could comfortably fit. If you wanted to go brushless the stock ratio works well with the Mamba 6800.

Hi guys, well just got mine. I really dont like electric, but to tell you the truth when its snowing outside or raining and you are able to practically build a track in the living room and race this little creature, al is good.
Got mine on friday, and drove it on saturday, what fun. I was impressed, but yet again as usual some mods need to be done. I already got the BRP aluminum shocks, getting the CVDs by Hot racing and my mamba 8000

Well here is a pic

um, should i buy this or get a mini-t? why? which one is better at what? ive heard mini-t's friction shocks stink and have read reviews on both, but wanted some advice from owners. im thinking rc18t right now, the mini-t seems too "toyish," and ive never driven anything 4wd, but i thint itll be good. help, please
edit: oh, buy the way i own a traxxas nitro sport and a evader ep(i think those gear ratios on the evader are too much acceleration and not enough top speed)
i wanted something smaller, and indoors

02-22-2005, 12:28 PM
@vertigo, ultimately its up to you, but in my opinion the RC18T is the better truck. 4 wheel drive is better at everything.
From what I've seen the Mini-T does have a strong, sealed drivetrain. Thats the weak point on the 18T. But with shims and setup, the RC18T can handle brushless power. Keep reading though, I think you'll find the 18T, or another 4wd truck is a better choice than a 2wd truck.

Thanks for the quick replys, im very happy with this forum i just became a member. im hearing the same thing from the mini-t guys also AND BY THE WAY A RC18T IS $154.99 AT TOWERHOBBIES so no price difference.THANKS!!!!!!!
be on the lookout for some crazy stuff for either the RC18,mini-t or this XRAY thing someone on the mini-t end told me of(ill hav to look that up). im thinking about putting on those sand paddle tires and tying some water bottles to the side(empty) and making it amphibious!
(just kidding...hmmm....or if i hate it enough... :D ;) ) im thinking RC18T right now but im still open to suggestions and like i said ill hav to look up this x-ray thing.
im not planning to put on a brushless or anything but maybe some minor handling upgrades. mostly indoors.

Yes stock motor is not the best. But once you change that, for an after market one, things change. In terms of the bones, i would cough up $28 for some CVD. then problem solved.
Well, I have a question here. Would you place the RX between the servo and the motor. Motor being a Mamba 8000, and stock mini micro servo. My RX is the JR RS310 XS3s PRO. If i place it there, then all the set up is perfect.
Thanx, good luck, :)

Hi all, after 2 weeks of waiting for parts, and building in my free time i managed to finish the truck 90%.
Here is what it has.
* Mamba 8000
* JR XS3 Pro RX
* Integy CVD's
* Integy Rear Arm Holder
* Integy Front Bumber
* BRP Shocks
* SSG Steering linkage
* Steel AE trunbuckles
What I think about some things?? Well I tried to fix the slop in the servo, so I added a 3/8th shrink tube to it, and it fixed it a bit but not that much. The steering linkage helps a lot in terms of the slop.
The BRP shocks, not that impresive. Very short shock travel and its very easy to build them with air inside. (PO. I dont recomend)
