Hi i guess its a bad way to start my new membership here but i was hoping to get the attention of any members who have done the same i have with my evader.
i currently have been through four (4) diffs and 3 clutches 3 rear chssis plates 3 stock servos 1 full set of rims 3 sets of tyres on the rear 2 front shock towers 2 front skid plates and counting. i am currently on the way to destroying diff number 5 but i hope someone out there can help me. yes i know its madness to put a brushless in them but the power is just insane and so reliable...if only the car could hold up.
my son also has a stock evader EP ST and his is just going fine.
i would like some info on some diff tips and perhaps how to mod it to last longer if possible.
so far i have done all my diff rebuilds by-the-book and have run them in properly its just the loose dirt and uneven surfaces that shock the diff loose which eventually kills it. i take it that the vibration and shock works the adjuster screw loose.
any advice is apprecaited.
regards
tom.

Ask around the Evader ST thread in this forum, the guys there have put metal diff gears and aluminum idlers in their trannys. The rest of the broken parts might be due to your driving.

hi
yeah your right about the broken parts. it really is like putting a dodge motor into a mini but i think i have the handle of it now except for the diff.

Yea i guess so, i have the buggy version and im getting the SS for x-mas. The thing is that i forgot to order upgrade parts for the tranny, oh well. Ill have to run it in limited mode for a little bit. The only part that i have broken is one front arm, i ran it in to a post. It was the first day i had it and i tried to brake to stop in time but the evader skidded into the post. I sent it under the warranty and got 2 new arms for free.

Ok, i have a few questions, are you lubing up the parts for your differentials, most of the time if it goes out you can take it apart and clean it. Clean all of the interior parts of it then put some grease on them and reinstall.
Also, how lose do you have your slipper.
If you dont have your differential tight enough it will surely die within a few days of use, you can tell if its slipping by the screeching it makes when it does.

yeah i even have a special cleaner and lube kit made up of a parts washing container and a grease and oil area. i have syringes for the grease and oils so the application is easy. one thing that has been noted just recently is the lock nut on the slipper tends to tighten itself. to counter-act that i have locked another nut against it. this works for a few minutes but then the screeching continues and also i can feel the motor plate near the slipper gets real hot. the motor is cold but the plate is hot from the heat transfer from the slipper. just this weekend diff number 6 has come and gone so i am really losing my patience with the thing my parts for the toughened diff will arrive in time but i would really like to get my head around this before building/modifiying another diff.

How long have you been running your car with the SS? I just got one in my buggy and it has been doing fine.

its been going fine in the car for about 4 months but around a month ago i started racing it near a building site using the cleared lot as a rally track doing jumps and running over loose dirt. seems the jarring the car took was causing the diff some grief, i initially though it was dirt in the gearbox and the spur gear but to no avail. even driving it now on the grass and packed dirt causes dramas after about 5 mins. i think i need to carefully scrutinize my rebuild regime as i am obviously doing something wrong. the first time i had the b/l in it it was fine. i gunned the hell out of it. although when i did the first re-build the diff washers were gouged like hell. afetr that i have been having very bad longevity for the diffs. my LHS have been as helpful as they can but they just shake there heads and always remark..."its a brushless what do you expect...you got too much power" until i sort my diff i will just wait in earnest for my HGI parts.
any more suggestions appreciated.

Running in grass can do some damage since its hard on the slipper and diff. It might be the way your building it? I've only ran my evader bx for about 3 runs so far and all seems well with the gearbox, i might just put in limited mode until i upgrade the transmission.

I just got this SS5800 in my RC10B4 yesterday(Built the truck yesterday too)....The B4 tranny will hold up well to this right?

Yeah, no problem. It's equal to a typical mod brushed motor... so it's definitely not too much for a B4. It shouldn't be too much for any race-quality 1/10.

i ran my car in limited mode for the last 2 diffs and man did the battery and esc get hot. i am not sure whats happeining there apart from some thermalling but i am not running it in limited again for the sake of the diff. one of my GP3300 cells got vented and i am not happy. its the first time i ran my car in limited and it will be the last time too. as for the re-build woes i am having can you point me into the direction of any grease of any particular brand i should be using. i still use the yellow gunk kyosho gave me when i bought my optima(had heaps of it) and the reddish purple stuff for the thrust bearings. i use sewing oil to re-oil the bearings on the outer part of the diff. we are about 2 years behind you all in the states so application specific lubes are usuallu substituted by bastartdizing already available item. in other words if we dont have it here we use something else we probly shouldnt be using.

I have used a lot of different diff lubes from kits... Associate and Losi, and MIP lube, etc. I've never found the need to buy anything special. The thick grease is fine for diff and thrust balls. I don't normally use grease on the gears.
Something is wrong if your slipper is overheating and/or the diff keeps crappping out. What exactly goes bad with the diff? Scored rings? Melted gear? Does it lock up or just start slipping?
Even before cars had slippers, the diffs didn't go bad like that.
On the diff, try replacing the lock nut. Maybe it's worn out and won't stay tightened. Same with the slipper lock nut.

I just use some vaseline, i know its not good lube but it works, well at least for now. I think there is something wrong in the diff or slipper cause diffs arent supposed to go out that many times.

i just did another trip to the LHS and got one of the off-road racers to the side for a quick chat. he had some stuff he used but only bought it online as its too expensive to buy 1 or 2 of each item through the LHS as opposed to buying 50 of this 50 of that...anyway i scored some tamiya ball diff grease and some associated black grease. i must say the consistency of the grease is very different to the stuff i had. the diff lube is like melted jelly and the black grease is like hardened sump oil. seeing the consistency is so different i think this is one area that may be the main one thats stuffing me up. all the while i have been using kyoshos glorified vaseline. the alloy idler is in and the carbides are in tomorrow so now its a wait from HGI although i am still trying out the car as i build in progress.

on a side note i did notice the thrust bearings to be moving a little more free with the black stuff. $15 well spent?...lets see!

i seem to have fixed the dying diff issue with my evaderst. after buying carbide balls for the thrust and diff i found that the thrust balls were ceasing up due to dirt build up and the grease i was using was just heating up and oozing out only to be replaced by dirt. i have since used better black grease and have stuffed the outdrive with dense foam. this keeps the dirt out and the grease in and my diff alive. so far 4 packs and no dreaded screeching of the diff. i fully thank all those whoi have helped me and can at least offer the same help in return where possible.
thanks all.
