So I am building a wild thing and everything was going good till I decide to put the hull together. It is twisted pretty bad and I was wanting help to get it straight. Does anyone know what I can do?

Not good! It looks like the deck is already on and your twist is probably set in for good unless you do some type of major destruction and then reconstruction.

I don't know how the instructions call for building this boat. I've only built Dumas boats and most of the ones I've built can be constructed on a flat building board or jig (for hydros) to ensure that the hull is built straight and true.

If I cut the middle out and leave the bulkheads can I get it straight?

Well I ripped my boat apart. I am going to try regluing tomorrow. It came apart surprisingly well also.

How on earth did it get that way? Check and double check your bulkheads for faults, something is majorly wrong with some part of the boat...

Yeah, I don't know man. The wood was a little twisted when I got it but I thought that would come out. my dad said it could have been when I was puting it together at the front that one edge slipped a little and caused the twist. Its apart now and I am going to just start over.

You are using epoxy, right? I'm assuming it wasn't cured  because if you used epoxy and it was cured solid, I don't know how you would've got it apart without a major hack job  !

Can you post a pic of your boat now that its apart? Before you reassemble (reskin) it, you must ensure that the "skeleton" remains true and is not twisted during the skinning process.

Well, I already started to put it back together. There is no skeleton to this boat. Will a .150 cable handle my o.s. .21?

Sorry about the skeleton thing. I'm not familiar with the construction of the Wild Thing. I only know Dumas.

I would not recommend a .150 cable for the OS .21. A .150 may cut it but maybe not. Go with the 3/16" (.187) and enjoy the peace of mind.

Can you use glue to hold it together to start with and then use epoxy or is that a no no?

I think that some builders use CA glue to "tack" the parts together and then come back with a fillet of epoxy. I like epoxy at the butt of the joints and I don't feel that I'll get that if I try to use CA.

I end up using lots of clamps of all types including clothes pins, tape and if I have to, I'll use T-pins to hold pieces of wood together while the epoxy sets. These days, I use slow set epoxy for just about all boat construction. Really makes for some long projects. You have to have a lot of patience with that stuff. I just feel a little more secure with the strength of my glue joints after using slow set (30 or 45 min) epoxy.

The thing I love abot ca glue is accelerator and debonder, if i get it on my cloths i can get it off and i can make it set instantly !!

ejp, I hope you get that thing sorted out, and I think your father is right...if the halves slipped during the curing, thatīs ptopably what caused the warping. Use more clamps, tape it down, whatever you can find, and the hull should come out nice and true...=) Happy holidays to you all!

O.k. It is back to building. And this time its the right way. I am ordering more wood and I am going to try again. I have one question though. Can I run an outboard on this boat or would an inboard be better. I also want to put something bigger then a .21 if that is possible. Any ideas?

As danny said, if your boat came apart that easily, there must have been something wrong!

Good luck re-dueing it, BTW some pics of the building process would be nice!
