Spools = locked diff.

Pro's= More traction on a slippery surface, great straight line tracking, when used in the rear it can help drifting. Can make a way over powered car more controllable.

Con's=Spools in the rear offroad are REALLY hard on the drivetrain. Snaps dogbones really easy. If you're jumping, or goinging high speed in the rough, it'll tear up the car. But if you're crawling they're almost a requirement. Also a spool in the rear of an onroad car can sometimes make them impossible to control, they're just spin out with any sort of turn. Some onroad cars can handle them, but I've never owned one that liked it.

Only place that it worked decent was on dirt oval cars, some sprint cars and 4wd vehicles didn't come with a diff equipped rear. On high bite tracks you could slide the car though the corners without upsetting the handling but only tracks where traction was less than adaquate they started coming out with optional diffs. Without a diff it puts more power to the wheels since you have no diff that allows wheels to slip, great on high bite surfaces.
Downside since drivetrain is under more stress you had more wear, dogbones snapped, outdrive hubs wore and wheel bearing would blow out especially the one way fronts - using double one way eased the wear some. On surfaces that were tight and with less than ideal traction using a diff allowed car to turn without upsetting the handling or overal speed. So most began using diff all the time adjusting it for track conditions.
