the world record holding FE hydro ran an estimated 44,000 RPM to motivate itself in excess of 120 mph. this boat utilized a wire drive!! so...why are all of us nitro sniffer's still using cables and straight shafts??? i think if a wire drive can handle a coke-can sized brushless motor at that high of an RPM, it should stand up to a nitro motor too. so, my next build is going to use a wire drive. or am i stupid?
What is different between a wire drive and a flex shaft?

A wire drive won't bird cage.

A wire drive is SOLID (not strands) and much smaller diameter. It is also much more efficient, but it won't work as well in relatively sharp bends. Basically, it'll work as long as there are no sharp bends.

BD- The wire is nice but it has it's draw backs. Like adjustability; they don't like to bend as much as a flex cable will. And getting them to not slip is a PITA! From what I hear, great for SAW but not necessary for oval or just playing arround.

the main reason i wanted to try a wire drive on my next nitro is because of what i saw on my 6-cell hydro. with a regular cable it did not rev up very well...when i switched to wire it was TONS better. it even ran quieter. and if you really think about it, noise from the drive line is lost energy, which in turn becomes lost speed. the cool thing is that if the wire drive doesn't work, i can switch back to a cable in a matter of minutes. i guess we'll see in spring when i finish the build.
