View Full Version : 1/8 BL buggy durability?? A few more questions.

How are the diffs holding up to the extra power?

How is the braking power compared to the typical disk setup?

I saw the video of a 1/8 with a Plette Max and 18.97 and was in awe. THATS...what I want. How much for the Maxx and 18.97 ? Is there another comparable motor and esc that would be cheaper?

Thanks.

Be prepared guys, I'm going to be asking ALOT of questions.

I don't have a BL buggy, but I do have a Buggy... From what I've seen the drivetrains on buggys are pretty much bulletproof. With the light weight, and typically a lack of traction, the diffs hold up fine.

And I saw that video too, I'm in awe.

I have an Ofna MBX R2 brushless buggy. I am using a Feigao 10L and a Warrior 9918 running on 16 GP3300 cells. So far, it has held up very well. The only problem areas have been the rear differential drive cup set screws coming loose (this happened once) and the wing shattering from a bad landing off a jump. I made a replacement wing out of lexan and it is holding up much better.

The brakes aren't as good as you get with a disc setup but they are ample. My E-Maxx and XLB both have better brakes but neither are as fast as my brushless buggy although the XLB comes close.

How does your bl setup compare to a typical racing .21, speedwise? Thanks.

My bl setup goes 44 mph, verifed by GPS. I have never owned a .21 so I really can't compare. One of my coworkers has the same buggy as mine with a Hyper .21 8 port but it has been in pieces since I finished my brushless setup. Having seen it run some time ago, I do know that my brushless setup will out accellerate it by a wide margin...top end I don't know. My XLB has a .28 and goes 41 mph, also GPS verified.

rstnboy, what pinion/spur gear do you run in your BL 1/8 to get 44mph?

The spur is 51 tooth and the pinion is 15 tooth.

Average nitro powered buggy is doing around 40MPh as max speed. If you are racing, all you need is around 30'ish anyway. You don't need real fast off road.

Thanks... I'm just trying to compare your gps run with "calculated guess" estimates for different setups. I have a gps, so I will check mine when it'sup and running.

Yeah, I'm not concerned about top speed, as I know the car will be plenty fast enough for the tracks I race on. I'm more concerned with the reliability aspect of it. With nitro engines your constantly going through clutches, bearings, glow plugs, and praying that your engine doesn't flame out when your leading the race, etc.............1/8 buggies are durable and handle great, but to me, nitro engines are the most unreliable, expensive sources of power. To combine the "user friendliness" of electric with the handle characteristics of 1/8 would be perfect. Thanks again .

And you don't have to worry about your engine loading up or stalling on the start line.

No but sometimes a brush can hang up and leave you dead in the water. Oh, wait... I forgot. We have brushless motors!!!!! :) :) he he

I ran my Hyper 7 brushless conversion for first time yesterday and all I can say "WWOOOWWW!!!!!!!!!!" I never seen it go that fast when it had the Hyper 21 8 port engine in it.

Today I painted a new body and Tomorrow I am going out to get some new pictures & video.
