Hmm, Where to start.

Well for one if you do a search on this forum for "Miss Bud", I am sure you will find tons of info regarding this boat.

As for that particular one that your looking @, I guess it would depend on your skill level to do the repairs. That particular seller seems to always be selling damaged Miss Buds. (do a item search on them)

As for what I personally think, well I think you can do better. I personally don't care for them that much. The engine & pipe are the only thing good about them IMPO. The engine on the one that your looking @ is damaged per the description. So buying that deal for the radio & engine is out.

To Be able to give you any good advise then your price range would be needed. Knowing what you are able or willing to spend on a boat package will alow us to give you GOOD reccomendations on where to look, or what to look for.

Can't wait till Hydro reads this...
"let me tell you what I think about the Miss Crudweiser!!!!"
Just messing around Hydro. We don't know each other but I know you allways have something to say about the buds.

In this case, that would be a very expensive used AM radio. A cracked hull and a siezed motor, not to mention all the mods it would need if they weren't already finished. I have a better idea. Order plans from Newton and I'll give you a source for a cowling and wing set so you can build your own 1/8th scale boat. At least that way, you would have a boat you can run, not someone elses abused and broken GARBAGE. I don't think you really want me to get going on this, do you?

This is Horizon's clearence house. All the busted up stuff is auctioned off in lots and this place resells it.Better to buy the new improved ??? version at top dollar and not have so many problems. Hydro and a search will tell you all about them. Lots of work to get running right. I have 3 and have converted them to electric - it was cheaper this way than to fix the nitro with all the problems. Of course the MRP Bud is still my "Favorite" and it's electric

I tried to keep this one short, Decoy. Do you want me to get into the long detailed version? I could go on about the thin lay up, the poor design, the many hop ups required, etc, etc, etc. I figure I have done enough to educate the people on the Bud's lackings, though a guy in California "claims" to have a boat doing over 50. But we don't want to get Water Cadet into this, now do we? :D

Hydro I never said it was 50+ see: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=182490
Infact to quote meself: "The hull is very near it's design limmits as it is now. It is not big enough to sustain 50+ IMO."

Garage Junky if you want a nice RUNNING Miss B then I would like to reffer you to my Miss B for sale. It is the one in that thread above (that I started). Here is the post in the for sale section: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=187008

The MM 18's are now supposed to be out in mid-February. Your best bet is to get on the waiting list. Do a search in here also on the Mean Machine 18, I posted some pix of the pre-production version. More expensive, yes, but worth it in the all-around quality.
This is what I found on the search that I did under my name. There probably are others. http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=163512&highlight=Machine

Yeah the Miss Bud does have a very inviting look to it. But IMPO, thats what your paying for (looks).

As Ron stated the MM 18 is due in mid-FEB. But then again it was supposed to be out in August. Waitng list is a option, it is a far superior boat to the Miss Bud for the X-tra 79.00.

There are lots of options out there for a nice rig. Whats your price range?
I myself do very well with used rigs that I pick up off people. But I know what I am looking at, and what I'm looking for. I also have experience that helps me from getting taken. I just picked up a rig the other day, I paid less than the Miss Bud cost new & the boat should run 50-60. Its 34 inches long & has a high quality epoxy layed up hull. 1/4 scale steering servo, and a Futaba Rx & Tx.

You have to remember though, YOUR BOAT IS NOT STOCK, which is what he was looking at, not to mention damaged as well.

If you know what you are doing it can be modded into a alright boat ;) . I've seen one doing a nice job at a local pond but it was so heavily modded I didn't immediately recognize it as a Miss Bud  .

Yeah thats the thing about those suckers. They are sold @ the LHS's as a starter boat. They are by no means a starter boat!!!!! They need to be modded out so much to run right that they are almost not the same boat any longer as 97trankin said. That being said, this is why there such a pain. A newbie normally does not have the experience & know how to do all these mods.

Thats why I feel the N. Hammer makes a good starter boat. May not be as fancy looking, but will run very well out of the box with no mods. (Also its 100.00 less)

i'm with CF on this one. the hammer is a much better 1st boat than the bud. they are more durable and don't need any mods to make it into a good boat.

 Big buds are fast, IF you put a Q-Draw in it, my freinds yesterday ran 68.7 mph with a gps clocking. But lots of inovative MODS. was really cold yesterday at the lake, lizards carrying sticks to stand on, was 40 degrees a high

What mods are needed on a 1/8 bud?

I've just bought one and will be replacing the radio with a Futaba HRS with digital servos and BH Hansons race motor so what else is needed?

Water tight boots for the servo pushrods, a better or rebuilt radio box, auto bailers, better running gear(unless they have moved to better stuff at Horizon) and reinforce the hull around the engine mounts. That should get you started.

I'm guessing that things may have changed with the latest version - the radio box is an integral item now and is fully contained - the pushrod seals seem watertight and fairly good quality and the running gear appears ok - although the driveshaft appears to have zero end float so that's a bit worrying and it's a fairly complex process to remove the shaft for greasing - all of which I'll address with the rebuild. I'll add autobailers of course and sort out the on/off radio switch which is exposed on the radio box lid.

Should really fly with the Hanson motor but I will reinforce the ribs around the engine mount.

Is the hull fairly well designed in terms of its shape?

I know this original thread is old. One thing no one brought up was the price this particular one sold for. This boat is a bargain at $167. Even if it needs a little fiberglass work. This company sells new boats that were damaged in shipping and most of the damage is minimal. The boat does have its share of troubles that are easily fixed and they do require a lot of patience but at that price it makes it worth the troubles. The new boat is somewhat improved but at $300-400 dollars you may want to explore other options.
