i've been trying to get an OPS .21 side exhaust engine...aeromarine is out of stock and they don't know when they'll have more. does anyone else sell them??? or can anyone recommend another engine?? i want the same bang for the buck (or something close). the ops motor puts out 2.4hp @35,000rpm. it costs $185 w/pipe.
Whatcha buildin Doc?????

That dude has more projects going than any of us.
I can honestly say that I've got two boats on the shelf right now ready to go. One airboat half done, & a new hull on order.

Doubledog, what airboat are you doing? I have one & one in the building phase.

Gesh, I don't even know what it is. Picked it up for hardly anything & the guy even threw in a few props, plugs & other small goodies (junk):D Might take a pic or two.
Haven't been in the mood for doing any boat work the last few months. Seems like I'm losing interest even though theres the new one on the way. (just got an email that its done)

Loosing interest???? COME ON :D
Maybe because you can't play because of the weather???? I have a BSB thats really fun to play with. I am building a large scale flat bottom that should be done by spring. I just persueded a friend in CT. to get a airboat. They live on a large pond & his Vee gets put up all winter. I told him that a AB would be great, running on the snow is a blast(snow rooster) & a frozen lake no biggie will run on ice too!!!
If you could only get a tunnel to run in snow!!

Wanting to say its the dumas swamp buggy .19 size. Only thing left to do is mount the servos & linkages but I'm stalling. Maybe the bug will bite & it'll get finished.

Uh, DD, he doesn't have more projects than I do. I have 10 hydros, a tug and at least one plane in the works. On top of that, I'm renovating part of my house, so I guess that gives me 12 projects all together.

yeah, i've checked out the OS motors...they're not bad, but i don't think they compare to the OPS. they're more than a half HP short and would cost the same after buying a pipe. that's another nice thing about OPS, the pipe is included.

Don't worry DD, I won't hold it against you :)

I like Doc's way of thinking.

I agree. What's the point of building a scale hydro if you're not going to put in a hot engine? And speaking of the boat, Doc,have you got all the parts cut out yet? I haven't heard anything in a while, sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
BoatDoc

nope...no parts yet. kinda busy. but i should have some stuff here soon. i'd like to have the engine by the time i start assembling so that i can fit the mounts. i'm building the mounts myself...so i need the engine to measure from. i don't need to worry about a radio, i've got 6 or 7 already, so i'll just use one that i have sitting here. my main problem is getting the %^%$ engine  that's why i started this thread!

I'm pretty sure that the OPS .21 engine that puts out 2.4 hp at 34,000 rpm is the supermarine version that is a rear exhaust version and sells for $325.00. I don't know what the power rating for the side exhaust version is but I bet that it is not 2.4 hp for only $185.00.
BoatDoc

those are the numbers quoted to me by aeromarine. the supermarine puts out something like 2.6 or 2.7 hp.

Check out the webpage below, it gives numbers for the OPS supermarine .21, they also sell the side exhaust, but they don't give numbers for it. I was in the market for a .21 so I did alot of searching. It seems like all the .21s in the 2.4 hp range were priced in the $300 and up range, so $185.00 seems a little suspicious. I would seek some numbers in writing before I shell out money for an engine.

things that make you go hmmmmm... i've checked that site out before while looking for an engine. i should call them to see if they have any OPS engines in stock. i may just shell out the extra $$$ and get a MAC if i can't get the OPS. but with all the projects i have right now, i'd rather not put $400 into an engine.

Maybe they can give you numbers for the side exhaust version if you call them. I would be interested in knowing the numbers for the side exhaust as well. I'm guessing 1.9 hp maybe?

the 2.4hp is the # that aeromarine told me over the phone a couple of weeks ago. it might be that high because of the RPM. i've noticed that the OS and K&B motors turn a lot slower than the OPS. they may be sacrificing torque for rpm. even at 1.9hp like you're thinking its still a bit better than OS and K&B. i think those are in the 1.5 to 1.7hp range. i'm trying to build this boat right the first time and don't want to spend all my time trying to tune a dog. i'm sick of having to modify an engine just to get a little speed out of it.

I know what you mean, I first purchased a new K & B 3.5 inboard off eBay that was the newer front exhaust version. After I ran it in my outrigger, I was only able to get it up to 40-45 mph max and was disappointed. So I sold it back on eBay, luckily I sold it for the same price that I bought it. The K & B is rated at 1.25 hp at 25,000 rpm. I ended up purchasing a brand new OS .21 RZ-M with 180 degree header for only $200 off eBay. This motor is rated at 2.4 hp at 34,000 rpm, which is almost twice the power of the K & B. Now the outrigger does 60-65 mph using only 30% fuel. I don't know why OS doesn't make the RZ-M series anymore, it is a great engine, starts right up, is easy to tune and is very reliable.

Oh, by the way I forgot to clarify, what I meant by calling them for the specifications, I meant calling Niagra Marine Hobbies to get their hp and rpm ratings for the side exhaust version and get a second opinion.

i just talked to niagra...they are supposed to e-mail the specs on the .21 side exhaust to me this evening. when i get the info, i'll post it up here.

That's not bad at all, 2.0 hp @ 29,000 rpm for $185.00 with pipe, no wonder why everyone is sold out.
